Mandawa (मंडावा) is a town in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan in India.

Location

Mandawa is situated 190 km off Jaipur in the north. The town lies between latitude 28°.06’ in the north and longitude 75°.20’ in the east. Mandawa is known for its fort and havelis. The fort town of Mandawa is well connected with the other places in region through a good network of roads.

Founder

Mandu Jat founded Mandawa village 1740 AD.

History

Mandu Jat founded Mandawa village. He first established a dhani (helmet) and dug a well here, which was completed on savan badi 5 samvat 1797 (1740 AD) [1]. Initially this place was known as ‘Mandu ki dhani’, ‘Mandu ka bas’ or ‘Manduwas’ which changed to ‘Manduwa’, ‘Mandwa’ and finally ‘Mandawa’. [2]

Mandawa fort

The fort of Mandawa was constructed in the 18th century. Nawal Singh son of Shardul Singh founded the fort in vikram samvat 1812 (1755 AD). [3]The fort dominates the town with a painted arched gateway adorned with Lord Krishna and his cows. The Chokhani and Ladia havelis and the street with Saraf havelis are some examples of this region's fresco painted havelis.

Havelis

The Bansidhar Newatia Haveli has some curious paintings on its outer eastern wall. The Gulab Rai Ladia Haveli has some defaced erotic images.

मंडावा का इतिहास

रतन लाल मिश्र लिखते हैं कि शार्दुल सिंह का एक अन्य पुत्र नवल सिंह था. इसने झुंझुनू से दक्षिण की और २४ मील दूर रोहिली नामक स्थान पर गढ़ बनाकर एक गाँव बसाया जिसे नवलगढ़ नाम दिया गया. यह बात विक्रम संवत माघ शुक्ल २, १७९४ की है. इसने गंगवाने की लडाई में भाग लिया था. इसने अनेकों लड़ाइयों में भाग लिया जिनमें बहल, सिहाणी एवं ढूंढ मुख्य हैं. विक्रम संवत १८१२ में इसने मांडू जाट की बस्ती में एक गढ़ बनाकर गाँव बसाया तथा उसे मंडावा नाम दिया गया. [4] मंडावा नगर शेखावतों के आने से पहले बस गया था. यह बात मंडावे के बाइयों के मंदिर के नाम से विख्यात देवालय के विद्वान संत वृजदास जी की बही के उल्लेख से पता लगता है. उस समय इसका नाम मांडवा या मांडवी था. नगर में भागचंद के लड़िये, गोयनके और हरलालके बस गए थे. बही में १३ रुपये ११ आने मांडू जाट की कूई की नाल के चक हेतु चैत बदी ८ विक्रम संवत १७८८ की तिथि लिखी है. इससे ज्ञात होता है कि संवत १७८८ तक मांडू जाट की कच्ची कुई विद्यमान थी और मांडू ने इस स्थान को काफी वर्षों पहले बसाया था.
