i read it long time back.........

have u ever wonderd who is the "adhinayak" and "bharat bhagya vidhata", whose praise we are singing..... I thought might be Motherland India! Our current National Anthem "Jana Gana Mana" is sung throughout the country.....

Did you know the following about our national anthem, I didn't.

To begin with, India's national anthem, Jana Gana Mana Adhinayaka, was written by Rabindranath Tagore in honour of King George V and the Queen of England when they visited India in 1919.

To honour their visit Pandit Motilal Nehru had the five stanzas included, which are in praise of the King and Queen. (And most of us think it is in the praise of our great motherland!!!)

The Jana Gana Mana Adhinayaka implies that King George V is the lord of the masses and Bharata Bhagya Vidhata is "the bestower of good fortune".

Following is a translation of the five stanzas that glorify the King:

First stanza: (Indian) People wake up remembering your good name and ask for your blessings and they sing your glories. (Tava shubha naame jaage;tava shubha aashish maage, gaaye tava jaya gaatha)

Second stanza: Around your throne people of all religions come and give their love and anxiously wait to hear your kind words.

Third stanza: Praise to the King for being the charioteer, for leading the ancient travellers beyond misery.

Fourth stanza: Drowned in the deep ignorance and suffering, poverty-stricken, unconscious country? Waiting for the wink of your eye and your mother's (the Queen's) true protection.

Fifth stanza: In your compassionate plans, the sleeping Bharat (India) will wake up. We bow down to your feet O' Queen, and glory to Rajeshwara (the King).

This whole poem does not indicate any love for the Motherland but depicts a bleak picture. When you sing Jana Gana Mana Adhinayaka, whom are you glorifying? Certainly not the Motherland. Is it God? The poem does not indicate that.

Nehru chose the present national anthem as opposed to   Vande Mataram, which is a far better composition in praise of our dear Motherland India.
Shouldn't Vande Mataram be our National Anthem. ????

Sounds interesting Ruppi....thanks for sharing it here.I will have to do my home work before my comments get splashed on this controvercial but genuine concern.

I think Vande Matram is very good for our national anthum. We never know the information gave by you, Please let us know the source of information about this "jan gan man".

Sounds Controvertial But Is there any proofs for that.... If it is so then it is really shame on our part

Is it another conspiracy theory or is it one for real. I never gave a crap about nationalism as it equates to loyalty for our ruling masters. Anyways, Good one!

Hard to nail down to the story without having the facts and the source of this article?

Agree with Deepshikha about this pic., don’t see any harm in the pic. per se!!

How Can You Prove It ???

The Only Proof Could Be The Time First Time " Jan Gan Man " Was Played , Can Somebody Please Find Out When Was It First Written And Sung ? What Was The Occassion ? I Tend To Agree With Rupi But Would Like To See A Proff As Well, Not Just Argument ;)

I have read this article somewhere else too and I think there is one or more PIL are pending in this regard as well.
Well, I have no proof but I also read somewhere that this was first sung when British king, I think George V, visited India in 1920 or so and it was sung in praise of the king.
The time it was written was the time of british rule so we can not deny that it was written in praise of the king. My guess only though.

I think Historians have a better idea.:)

Well here's an important link that provides all the 5 stanzas

http://www.sanyal.com/india/janagana.html

The important fact to the best of my knowledge is that originally there was only 1 stanza that we know as national anthem & it was first sung ny INC during their convention during King George V's visit in 1911 . However, the addtional 4 stanzas were added apparently in 1936 upon request from Moti Lal Nehru ( not sure ). So, these are the theories since I have no Idea if it was George V , Edward VIII or George VI who visited India in 1936.

One thing I am sure about is that that until it's changed I should pay full respect to my national anthem .

Great Rupi !

Rupi is absolutely right, this composition was for King George but not for India, our motherland.

No harm with the pic if Pt. Nehru was a normal person but not the PM of India.

Peotry is Probably too Deep and Can have Multiple Meaning.

Dear Friends,

The research done by Rupinder is excellent. Even the production of the old picture is commendable effort.

Let us now discuss the issue of National Anthum. It is not for whom it was written, but it is what we meaning we drive from it. Just for example.

Charan dharat chinta karat, chitwat charon orr,
Suvaran ko khojan phiren, Kavi, Vyabhichari, Chor.

Here Suvaran has three meaning, one each for, Kavi, Vyabhichari and Chor.

So, things boil down to perception and the meaning what matters to you. There is no where King George's name that appears in the song and thus it could be sung in praise of any one, be it the President of India, or the God or whatever you feel.

Regarding the states, it does not resticts to "Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat, Maratha,' it also have Dravid, Utkal, Banga. Just from the poetic point of view it might not have been possible to included all the names we have now. The entire North East was known as NEFA, now we have several states there. So is the case of Chttisgarh, Jharkhand and Uttranchal Pradesh.

There is nothing wrong in changing the National Anthum, if the resolution is passed with the required majority in both houses of Parliament. Any thing that is sacred, depends more on the believers than the thing itself. Cow is not sacred, untill we believe in it.

One thing is for sure, the post initiated is very good for our knowledge. The bad thing is that if the makers of the country knew it at that time, why did they adopt it. We really can't blame only Nehru for this, as it was done in a parliamentry system. And if some one says that Nehru himself was so powerful with in the Congress, then others were just the spineless followers and then let us not praise others as we too often do (Like if Patel was the PM things would have been better and so on.)

Not only that, the National Anthum is some thing where the views of opposition are also need to be taken and thus even the opposition parties and their leaders are to be blamed for that.

Lighting a cigrettes is OK. Only thing is that it makes a poor impression on the kids, since he was known as "Chacha Nehru" and thus probably should not have been done in front of Camera.

What you think Tevatia Sir about Kashmir issue as a Soldier ? I think its due to Pt. Nehru only otherwise Sardar Patel may had solved that within few days.

Both are Equally Responsible

What you think Tevatia Sir about Kashmir issue as a Soldier ? I think its due to Pt. Nehru only otherwise Sardar Patel may had solved that within few days.

Dear Vijay,

Kashmir is not only an issue but a subject in itself, and hence to comment upon it in a small reply like this would be an injustice to the subject matter. However I shall give my unbiased opinion on the issue that you have raised.

Sardar Patel was the Home Minister in Mr. Nehru's ministry, and mind you probably both of them knew that Sardar commanded more masses than Nehru himself. Now the question comes as to why did Sardar not become the PM and Nehru became. To me it is the situation where Sardar's nomination to PM's Job would have given the indication that probably Mr. Gandhi favored a person from his own clan/state. Probably for this reason Mr. Gandhi did not press the issue for Sardar and did support Nehru's nomination.
Now is the question of accountability. Since Sardar was himself part of the same cabinet, to me he is as much responsible for the situation as Nehru, for the two reasons. Firstly if he did not agree with Mr. Nehru on the issue, why did he not revolted against Mr. Nehru. Was is party's interests were more dear to him then the National interest. if that be so, then probably those politicians are responsible for creating this culture which we see today as too harmful for the nation. Secondly, if he did not revolt then he is as much party to it as any one else in the Cabinet, probably more if we consider it an internal issue. It is the Home minister's responsibility to deal with the internal issues.

My knowledge from the same sources as yours. I read few books, as I myself was not born at that time. What I have read is that when the Hindu Muslim riots broke out, both Nehru as well as Patel were found wanting to control the situation. It was (as the history tells us) Mountbaten who guided them to get the situation under control. And let me tell you, both of them had little exposure to control such a situation. May be they had given a more free hand to the armed forces.

It is very easy for us to criticize what they did then. Who knows given the then situation, most of us might have done the same thing what they did.

I have never been a supporter of Mr. Nehru and his policies. However I feel uncomfortable when we blame him for every thing and praise others who were part and parcel of decision making with him. That is unfair.
