What is Congress doing right?

Congress has been the ruling party of the country for 52 of the 64 post independence years.
Despite the controversies, emergency, corruption, ghost-leadership,bad governance, Congress continues to enjoy the public support (may be a little presumptuous in current scenario!)
So, what is it that Congress is doing right?
That it evolves with the changing time, national and world dynamics?
That it is the most secular political party that the minorities feel comfortable with?
Or, is it just that there is no other political party that can face and check the might of Congress?

Good topic...

Congress got a defacto strong position with pan India presence post independence. It was the only mainstream political party. The communists, the hindu mahasabha, etc. were side players. Muslim League, the other strong party, went to Pakistan. For first 2 decades, India was pretty much a one party state.

Now, India is a country of million minorities. That means that the barriers to entry into politics as a national party are very high. There are hardly any emotive issues that unite all the people across the country. In such a scenario, Congress had a huge advantage that was very difficult to break. For most of last 64 years, you could only get localised opposition based on local issues. Which is how it started, first with the dravidian movement in Tamilnadu. Emergency and the JP movement saw for the first time, various regional actors unite on the Janta platform against the Congress. That leadership has now been broken and it has been 20 years since Congress lost the ability to rule on its own.

BJP used the Hindutva movement to gain some ground and under Vajpayee, became a national party. But despite being in power, it failed to break through into several states and even lost relevance in key states like UP. Vajpayee had the charisma and qualities to be a national leader, but there was no replacement once he left. Now BJP is nothing more than a super-regional party (with regional bosses like Modi, yeddy, etc.).

So I don't think we can see the 64 years as a continuum as there were several phases. Congress doesn't have the same advantage qualitatively that it had after independence, but it has still managed to be the party that can be anything to anyone as long as it helps it remain in power. This sort of opportunism runs across all parties, but Congress has institutionalised it with different people saying and doing completely different things and still managing to remain together. It is possible as the uniting factor is loyalty to a family, rather than to any principles or ideology.

According to me BJP is a better party than congress but the problem with BJP is that ,there is lot of internal conflicts in the top leaders of BJP ,that causes lots of disparities .

BJP came to power 2 times till now after the independence only on the issue of Hindutava & Ram mandir ,but they have done nothing for this & have forgotten this completely now .

Secondly BJP is not allowing the youth to come forward in the party ,like we have very good leaders like Varun gandhi (who could be a alternative to rahul gandhi in public mind's ),Parvesh Verma (son of Sahib singh verma ,Ex-CM of delhi )& a lot more are there .

Also BJP has the support only in the upper caste like Brahmin ,Bania ( mainly confined to cities )not to villages .BJP should built his base in villages because it's true that REAL INDIA STILL LEAVES IN VILLAGES .............

Is it also the loyalty to the Party that owns the legacy of struggle and success of winning Independence?

What about its members? It is a little hard to believe that a woman can turn such a savvy politician with such a quick turn around that she beat the stalwarts at their own game of "congress".If it is the loyalty to a family that draws the votes, then it a possibility that she is just a face of Congress, and the puppeteers are safely looking after their own interests.

It can't be loyalty to the party because of its association with independence. Hardly any of the electorate is from that period. And for a long time (since Indira took over), there has been no "freedom fighter" in Congress. In fact, people who broke away from Congress were associated with freedom struggle like Rajgopalachari, JP, etc.

Why is it hard to believe that a woman can turn into a savvy politician?

There aren't really any stalwarts in Congress. Many are sycophants who derive their power from loyalty to "high command". They keep everyone else in check. There is not much incentive for any popular leader in rocking the boat when probability of achieving success alone is small.

Aanch jee, the ground reality is that people vote for the congress largely due to the name of the family. Such people have faith in the Gandhi family that they will do good to them. You may recall the trouble the congress party was in i.e., BJP came and stayed in power, when none of the Gandhi family members were in the party.

Why are Maneka Gandhi and Varun Gandhi unable to cash as much on the family name?

Interesting topic and infact a case study for organisational purposes.

Congress's formidable uprising can be contributed to various factors among which are common and basic principles of human behaviour and social psychology.

# Congress as an organisation appeared at the scene when Indipendent movement was in infancy. Congress was founded by people who were influneced by western political philosophy. Many Britisheres were also involved in its founding process. By that time there was no recognised and organised political front in country. So we can infer that congress is relishing the fruit of first arrival. Any organisation/company/institute/person if arrives at most earlier times will always be ahead than its competitors. It helps in making a base for future. Its among one of core competencies.

# World was moving rapidly with the invention of technology and science in late 19th and early 20th centuary. Ideas, informations were getting reached to public faster than ever. In these situations many educated, socially active youth joined congress. Congress was percieved as lone redemption in a slave nation. It is simple when we see that a low self -esteem easily accepts and approve anything higher[ projected higher] than itself. Its acceptance in slave subdued low-self esteem was huge and with in short span of time it got approval of masses.

# Scene prior to 1920 was different. It was different because many stalwarts [ extremists and softs ] were fighting for power struggle with in organisation. During 20s Gopal Krishan Gokhle who almost had taken over extremists, baptised Mohandas Ghandi in to Congress. Since then it becamse @Ghandhi propreitership in this organisation. Keep in mind that Ghandi was reharsing his launch in Indian scanario since 1906. He almost had calculated everything prior to his arrival.[ Same can be related with current scenario. Sonia Ghandi waited for almost 7-8 years to enter in to active politics but she mimicked what Ghandi did. She never accepted any post in government alike Ghandhi. It sent a message to public that these guys are not power hungary. So image building/goodwill generation].

# Ghandhi was a master politician. he established the rules of Non-violence, peace etc. We ve seen aggression always leads to exhertion and eventually drying of resources. Plus to enjoy fruits of success one has to be alive and one can be alive if one follow the path of least resistence politically. Bhagat Singh and guys believed otherwise and hence didn't live longer to be in scenario.

# Post Indipendence there was again many big leaders in party up to late 60s. It was only and only congress rule. Ruling for almost 20-25 years has given congress the experience and skills to understand Indian psyche. Again in the same period with the help of govt machinery congress established its leaders [ Ghandhi n Nehru ] worshipable. Any wanna be politicians/leaders and workers wanted to enter in congress, personality worship was embeded in their mentality. It gave birth to an army of opportunist brilliant sycophants.Like a company product becomes a brand, same way congress has become a brand. Further this brand was placed highly so that people always try to pursue it. Few those who opposed Congress like Lohia, JP never get near to ruling regime.

# After Indira divided Congress to sideline some socio-political it was never looking back time for them. She ruthlessly ruled and press her rivals by every means. This time personality worship started heavily. Bureocrates started replacing their spine with rubber brand named congress and Ghandhi to enjoy power. Brand Congress was a monopoly and almost learned everything to be successful in political market.

# Assasination of Indira and Rajiv leaded to the wave of sympathy and established them as martyr for country. Congress exploited and exploiting these deaths to the maximum. A wave of sympathy always broke the rock developmental issues.

# PV Narsimha Rao reigme and 90s saw a sharp decline in Congress's popularity. Again reason was lack of party discipline. In my opinion they let it happen to minimum level so that people become desperate to again revival of this brand. Sonia became unaccessible to the population and this has increased the brand value and with Sita Ram kesri's time she decided to enter in to organisation. In a personality worship organisation this worked as high generation antibiotic and she resurrected the whole organisation. It has become a now an established fact that any organisation needs a face, a personality which charm people, attract them so that they can cast their vote in their favour. With their new reigme under UPA Sonia smartly appointed manager Manmohan to run this corporation which is a smart and clever move. In these 10 years Rahul Ghandhi will be groomed as a politician and if he wouldn't work they ve reserved option of Priyanka Ghandhi. Because of one supreme person in an organisation Congress became disciplined.

# Where as other partys or opposition never had a second third line of leaders, thinkers and negotiaters, Congress always had ex-bureaucrates, academicians and line of policy makers. Vajpayi reached at top post because of his own charm not because what BJP and Sangh has been doing for last 75 years. BJP the party of different philosophy only became the Party with differences in leadership.

# Since Congress initially was doctrined by Western political philosophers it is clear that they dagger the carot of divide and rule and it always workd. For example Congress in any state according to its regions/cast/religion would support three to four main leaders for CM so that every region gets maximum support ultimately to congress. In Haryana they ve bifurcated Ahirwal,Jat, Bangar and Dalit votes. every region is given a promise of their own CM. Its a smart and clever move to gather maximum votes.

From above mentioned points it can be easily concluded that congress is playing the game of emotions with sharp brain. What it has been doing right could be :-

a) Psychologicaly establish prominent leaders as angels.(Image Building)
b) Party president becomes unaccessable to the most.(Demand and supply)
c) Creating options in the form of various leaders (Future planning)
d) First arrival in India Scene( Crediblity)
e) Don't speak, keeping mum on serious and harmful issues unless they passes.( Understanding of Indian populace's ''forgetting'' nature)
f) Ghandhisation of everything possible. [ Coming generation wouldn't believe otherwise, future planning]
g) Delay progress and then release minimum [ Demand and supply]
i) Congress I- See it, read it, believe it, and vote for it , Always!

Still I believe that the way Ghandhi delayed Indian indipendence, post indipendence Congress government has delayed the arrival of development. Present growth could ve been done in 70 and 80s as well.

Lord Acton said once,'' Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.''

I agree partly as it could be a statement of dystopic mind. It could be repharsed in case of congress as ,'' Power teaches you to be wise to stay in power eternaly''. Congress seems to ve embibed it over the years. They play the game of emotions with clear and sharp mind.

Can you beat it?

Congs ne desh ki waat laga di h..... bharst or nikarsat govt h.... but there is no strong opposintion.........
kya hoga es desh ka.......... JAI Hind/////

Too big to fail????

I completely agree with you that Congress has been and is a party of educated and socially active youth, ex-bureaucrats, academicians and line of policy makers.
This is what makes the party so organized and formidable.
Besides the Western political philosophers, we have our own Chanakya to inspire the politicians.

Two questions for you-

1) Does the developmental work done by other political parties reflect that Congress could have accelerated the growth and development of the country when it could?
2) Do the other political parties not play with the human behavior, emotions and psyche of the public whenever they get an opportunity? The biggest example being the Hindutva card by BJP.

(On a lighter note, spelling "Gandhi" as "Ghandhi" will not make the name any less influential)

I think the importance of Gandhi surname or even the Nehru-Gandhi family's appeal to the voters is being over-rated. If that had been the case, Congress would have been powerful in states like UP, Bihar and Gujarat.

The name matters within the party. Just like Congress benefits in India from the advantage of being the prominent party, Gandhis benefit within the Congress. The leadership ensures that no other leader of national prominence is able to come up. The leaders popular with public are restricted to their particular region. The government & party is full of leaders with no public base. The principle is simple-if you depend on me for your power, how can you oppose me. The few who are popular and don't listen to the high command like Jagan in Andhra are thrown out.

Unfortunately, most parties in India are going the Congress route as far as internal party democracy is concerned. This I think is the biggest tragedy of Indian democracy, where the political parties themselves have an authoritarian structure which means that fresh ideas and voices find it difficult to break through.

Post freedom, Congress started on a strong foot due to early mover advantage but its decline has been consistent and gradual, largely due to this very "Gandhi" surname. Now, this argument may appear strange (Gandhi responsible for decline) on the face but nonetheless it is a strong argument, here is it so:

M K Gandhi, the biggest of all the gandhis, wanted congress to be dissolved as he could apprehend what we see happening now, still it continued and survived due to Nehru's vested interests. During Nehru's regime, the newly freed country leapfrogged in infancy , made a reasonable headway to progress and self reliance. But was it due to Nehru? No..it was due to various participants Govt functionaries (erstwhile freedom fighters) in the first government viz Patel etc, who were honest to the core. While Nehru indulged in creating a so called self projected image of a Statesman through the so called Panchsheel, Non -alliance etc; thousands of erstwhile freedom fighters worked religiously & silently to build the nation- they build the nation, not nehru. While Nehru failed in essence, the 'freedom fighter' spirit worked sincerely.

Then came, a bunch of Gandhis. Owing to their 'real' incompetence, an opposition started emerging in the form of Jan Sangh and left etc. Nevertheless, masses through nostalgia kept voting for Congress due to the absence of any formidable opposition. Post Nehru era, various small regional dynasties grew up in congress and the congress functionaries under the high of power got corrupted. Emergency was a watershed moment for Congress, for the first time it realized that it is fallible. But stiil, failure of the alternate govt due to coalition, lack of "agenda" (their agenda till that point was nothing but anti -congressism) and lack of experience in administration helped the Congress to bounce back. During all this period, BJP and Left were getting stronger day by day and they could convey their ideology beyond the anti-congressim. This helped in gradual decline. Indira Gandhi had a checkered career waving between extreme positives like (nationalization of banks, land reforms, iron fisted handling of Sikh terrorism etc) to extreme negatives like emergency etc. She was a seasoned politician nevertheless, though had her share of controversies. Had it not been emergency (Courtesy Indira..a result of power going into head), we would not have had the opposition that we have today. So emergency was an inflection point that strengthened opposition parties instead of weakening them as it was supposed to do.

Indian constituency had been soft hearted, we, esp hindus, jump at the first occasion to sympathize bechargi (as it happened when Indira was assassinated), so it was the assassination not anything else that brought Rajiv (in actual sense it strengthened the the sympathy wave about GAndhi Surname and there-is-no-alternative blah blah). Rajiv as expected was more of a failure and contributed to the gradual decline immensely (his handling of Shah Bano case, then his attempt to win back Hindu votes by kicking of his campaign from Babri ). BJP jumped on the opportunity and emerged as an alternative by taking the babri issue flanked by nationalist ideology. Congress by now was marred by scandals of all ilk (remember Bofors, Bhopal Gas tragedy). In the meantime, people were getting educated and the congress group of sincere ‘freedom’ functionaries was declining and second generation of dynasties with silver spoon started replacing old stalwarts in various regions. These second generation congressis lacked “connect” with the masses as they did not rise through the ranks. Rajiv Gandhi, who was directly responsible for bhopal gas tragedy, has been instead projected as a leader of modern idea who had a penchant for technology and wanted india to be a big power in tech: This is even bigger tragedy than Bhopal Gas itself ;)

One of the biggest achievement form Congress has been the liberalization era spearheaded by PV Narsimha Rao. But his name was conveniently forgotten as he did not toe the line of Gandhi Parivar. He never finds any mention, instead paper tigers such as Manmohan were declared the architect of Globalization through a sustained media campaign.

Post Narsimha Rao, congress had no one to take refuge under. Had Congress been an ideology driven party, there would have been a strong legacy and a successor. Since most of the regular congressis lacked any ideology to subscribe to and suffered from factionalism, Sonia Gandhi became a rallying point. Part sympathy wave (for this widow) and part result of sustained media campaign, the incidental cohesiveness of cadres (purely because they had been brainwashed to accept any Gandhi as their leader) brought the Congress back in the mainstream. But the decline was still consistent and gradual, Congress lost its hold in most states of the country, instead of being as ‘the force’, it has become as one of the alternatives.

Now a days, congress has been reduced to a party which lacks ideology. They have taken the garb of so called Secularism (in fact minority appeasement, typical vote bank stuff), not out of some intellectual pangs but sheer out of necessity to counter BJP. No guesses that top ten fastest growing/developing states list hardly has any Congress Ruled state. Congress has been able to stick to power purely through a polarised Muslim & SC/ST vote bank. These two blocks (esp Muslims) not only polarise to vote for Congress but also do tactical voting to ensure the defeat of any candidate from BJP which otherwise could give Congress a run for votes. Congress has a sinister design to keep its main constituency (muslims & backwards) as illiterate, poor and polarised. If these groups join the mainstream, congress will have a tough time. So the so called resurgence of congress is nothing but:

1) Keeping its constituency uneducated and polarised.
2) Ensuring a corrupt media and a sharp media management.
3) Taking refuge under ‘fake’ ideologies like Secularism purely to counter BJP.
4) Inability of BJP to garner a greater acceptability from larger coalition partners, as no one wants to take a chance to scare Muslims away. Hindus have been less prone to polarisation.
5) Ability to build paper tigers like Manmohan (projection as ‘The’ Economist, this will happen only till the point he behaves as Dhritrashtra, post that he will meet the same fate as others), Rahul Gandhi (the saviour, a leader who can feel the pulse of maases) and Sonia Gandhi (Tyagmurthi). Real heroes, be it the freedom fighters such as Bhagat ISngh, Neta Ji or the post freedom heros like Sardar Patel, Lal Bahadur & Narsimha rao, have been conveniently erased from popular memory through a sustained media campaign, tweaking of history books and conspicuous iconography celebrating only anyone one with the surname Gandhi.

This is very dangerous trend, some times, I feel sad brooding about the consequences.
We at least belong to a generation, that has heard stories from their elders about the ‘real’ heroes of freedom and been exposed to the leaders like Atal and ‘thinker’- PV Narsimha Rao. What about the next generation who will grow up hearing about everything names after “Fake Gandhis’, studying fake Gandhis. It’s our duty along with the opposition parties to ensure that we cleanse the system and protect young minds from getting polutted.

If Congress has to really transform as a party of ideology, the first things they have to do is to throw gandhis and restore inner party democracy else, the decline will be consistent though gradual. The decline will be hastened because of the inaptitude of leaders like Rahul who clearly lack administrative skills and leader like qualities. Else, Congress has to ensure that its constituency remains in penury and ignorance. I doubt the last option will hold for ever....

Ironically, parties like BJP have also been using the 'Gandhi' brand name. Earlier, they had Mrs. Sanjay Gandhi (Menaka) in their fold as a Minister and now another prominent Gandhi from the same clan you have been so doggedly dubbing as 'fake Gandhis'. How come if Varun Gandhi joins BJP he becomes a real Gandhi and an icon of 'Hindu Nationalism'? Do Menaka and Varun Gandhi still continue to be 'fake Gandhis', or metamorphed into reals after their re-christening by BJP??? What is your take?
