Punyastambha (पुण्यस्तंभ) was the ancient name of town Puntamba (पुनतांबा) situated on the banks of the Godavari River in Rahata taluka , Ahmednagar District in the state of Maharashtra, India.

Puntamba Village belongs to Khandesh and Northern Maharashtra region in Nashik Division . It is located 86 KM towards North from District head quarters Ahmednagar. 19 KM from Rahata. 237 KM from State capital Mumbai. Puntamba Pin code is 413707 and postal head office is Pun Tamba . Gondegaon ( 5 KM ) , Rampurwadi ( 7 KM ) , Shingave ( 7 KM ) , Shingave ( 7 KM ) , Naygaon ( 8 KM ) are the nearby Villages to Puntamba. Puntamba is surrounded by Rahata Taluka towards west , Kopargaon Taluka towards west , Vaijapur Taluka towards East , Rahuri Taluka towards South.[1]

History

The village has history going back to the Shalivahana.[2]It is believed that the name of the village was formed by merging the two towns Punyastambha and Tambilindanapur.

The village contains the 14th and the final resting place of the sage Changdev. The town is known for old temples and traditional schools that specialize in study of the Hindu scriptures or the Vedas.

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[3] ने लेख किया है .....पुण्यस्तंभ अथवा 'पुनतांबा' (AS, p.564) महाराष्ट्र का एक प्राचीन नगर है। यह मध्य रेलवे के धौंड-मनमाड मार्ग पर स्थित है। यह प्राचीन नगर गोदावरी नदी के तट पर बसा हुआ है। संत ज्ञानेश्वर के शिष्य महायोगी चांगदेव की समाधि यहीं गोदावरी के किनारे पर ही बनी हुई है।
