Barahi

Barahi (बराही)[1] Barai (बराई) Burai (बरई) is gotra of Jats. Brahoe/Brahwi/Barohi clan is found in Afghanistan.[2] Barai (बराई) Jat clan is found in Amritsar. [3]
Origin
This gotra is said to be started from their ancestral Raja Dharanivaraha (धरणीवराह). [4]
Jat Gotras Namesake
- Barahi = Saraparai = Saraparæ (Pliny.vi.18)
- Barahi (Jat clan) = Barahi (In Nepal) = Varahi (वाराही) (L.1, 4, 12). Varahi (वाराही), the goddess, is mentioned in (L.1,4,12) of 'Pujaripali Stone Inscription of Gopaladeva'. ....(V.2) - Vārāhī (वाराही) (L.1), she herself . ....(V.7) - Vārāhi (वाराही) (L.4), who utters a terrific cry and who raised the earth with her tusk, has always been praised with devotion by the brave Gôpâla....(V. 22) - As Nandin is (dear) to Mahesha, as Garuda is to Vishnu, so (art thou) Gôpâla, a son of the goddess Varahi (वाराही (L.12) undoubtedly ![5] Pujaripali (पुजारीपली) is village in Sarangarh tahsil in Raigarh district in Chhattisgarh.
Mention by Pliny
Pliny[6] mentions Nations situated around the Hyrcanian Sea.... the Derbices also,18 through the middle of whose territory the river Oxus19 runs, after rising in Lake Oxus,20 the Syrmatæ, the Oxydracæ, the Heniochi, the Bateni, the Saraparæ, and the Bactri, whose chief city is Zariaspe, which afterwards received the name of Bactra, from the river21 there. This last nation lies at the back of Mount Paropanisus,22 over against the sources of the river Indus, and is bounded by the river Ochus.23

It now flows into the Sea of Aral, but the ancients universally speak of it as running into the Caspian; and there are still existing distinct traces of a channel extending in a southwesterly direction from the sea of Aral to the Caspian, by which at least a portion, and probably the whole of the waters of the Oxus found their way. into the Caspian; and not improbably the Sea of Aral itself was connected with the Caspian by this channel.

The native term, Hindoo-Koosh, is only a form of the ancient name "Indicus Caucasus," which was sometimes given to this chain. The ancient name was derived probably from the Persian word paru,a "mountain."

Some suppose it to have been only another name for the Oxus. Ansart suggests that it may have been the river now known as the Bash.

History
Faridkot city in Punjab was founded by Bhallan of the Burai Jats in 16th century during the reign of Mughal emperor Akbar.[7]
H. W. Bellew [8] writes that The Parikanoi (Persian plural form of the Indian Paru-ka = "mountaineer") mentioned by Herodotus along with the Asiatic Ethiopians, are now represented by the Brahoe, Brahwi, or Barohi an indigenous word of the same signification, " mountaineer". The term Asiatic Ethiopians of Herodotus, here mentioned, refers to that branch of the ancient Cushites which at a very early period settled in the Tigris valley, and thence extended along the sea-coast to the Indus. From these parts they spread eastward to the heart of Rajputana or Rajwara as the Kachwaha and to the north as far as Hindu Kush, where we have seen Kachwaha tribes among the people of the Kafiristan and Kunar or Kashkar. The tradition current among the Baloch, of their ancestors having come from Aleppo in Syria evidently refers to the Cushite origin of the ancient inhabitants of the country.
Brahwi
H. W. Bellew [9] writes that The Brahwi, — the name is said to be a corruption of Ba-rohi,"of the hills," or "Highlanders," and distinguishes this people from the Baloch, whom they designate as Na-rohi (Narhwi), " not of the hills," or " Lowlanders," — inhabit the Sarwan and Jhalawan provinces of Kalat Balochistan, and the Brahwi, or Brahwik, range of mountains extending southwards through these districts and Las Bela, from Shal Kot (Quetta) in the north to the sea coast in the south, and bounded eastward by Kach Gandava and westward by Nushki and Kharan. This wide area of mountains and elevated plateaux is the central home of the mountaineers called Brahwi, and is the country in which their language, called Brahwiki, prevails. The name Brahwi, thus explained, corresponds to the term Kohistani, applied to the "mountaineers " of the Swat and Boner countries at the northern extremity of the Indus frontier, and is not the proper ethnic name of the people to whom it is, in one sense, properly enough applied. The proper ethnic name of the Brahwi and his language is Baraha, an aboriginal tribe of kindred race with the Lumri ; but the names Baraha and Brahwi, Brahoe and Barohi, are really the same, and the people so called are of the same stock as the Kurd or Kurd-Gali. Though mostly centred in the area above defined, the Brahwi is found all over Balochistan, and, as we have seen, in Sistan also ; and though in his native home he is more commonly called Brahwi, outside it he is most commonly called Kurd, or KurdGali; whilst both names, Brahwi and Kurd, are common to him everywhere. The Brahwi or Kurd is in reality a descendant of the ancient Assyrian or Khaladi. During the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries the Kurd were an important people in Afghanistan ; and under the Malik Kurd dynasty (previously noticed), the princes of which were treated as favoured vassals by Changiz Khan and his successors, they held the government of Herat, Ghor, and Kandahar to the confines of the provinces on the Indus. The Malik Kurd dynasty in Afghanistan was extinguished, as before stated, by Tamerlane ; but was revived in Balochistan by the ancestor of the present Khan of Kalat, a chieftain of the Kambar clan of Kurd. I have mentioned these historical details, because they help to explain in some degree the mixture of Turk (subjects of the Kurd) elements in the composition of the tribes of Balochistan, whether clans of the Brahwi or of the Baloch. Most of the names of the clans and sections of both these great tribes end in the Persian plural form (possessive) -ani (which is sometimes changed to -anri or -ari), corresponding to the Indian -ka. or -ki, and the Afghan -khel and -zi.
[Page-179]: The principal Brahwi clans are the following ; and they are all subdivided into more or less numerous sections, some of which contain only a few families. The principal clans are : —
Amal. Bangal. Bizanju. Ghajgi. Jatah. Kalloi. Kambar. Kedar. Kochik. Kurd. Langao. Lari. Luti. Mahmud Shahi. Mandar. Mingal. Noshirwani. Pazh. Phog. Rais. Raksh. Rod. Saholi. Samala. Sarpara. Shekh Huseni. Shirwani. Sonari. Tambar. Zehri. Zigar, etc. Of these names,
- Ghajgi stands for Kaj-kij native of Kaj or Kej.
- Jatah is Jat.
- Kedar for Kehdar mercantile Kajput.
- Langao stands for Langaha, Chaluk or Solanki Rajput.
- Lari for native of Lar (Kurd).
- Luti for native of the Lut, or desert of Yazd and Kirman.
- Mahmud Shahi perhaps for the posterity of colonists
settled here by Mahmud Ghaznavi.
- Mandar has been noticed before.
- Noshirwani and Shirwani, lower down the list, appear to be the same, and represent the posterity of Noshtewan, king of Persia.
- Pazh, or Pash, is perhaps the same as Pas, Posh, or Pakh, the Pashai before mentioned, or else the same as the Bash, met with before as the Bashgali of Kafiristan.
- Rais, or Raisani, may stand for Raoka, Solanki in Musalman disguise.
- Raksh, or Rakash (Rakshani) for Rakhaj native of the Arabic Ar Rokhaj, and Greek Arakhotia, or Arakhosia.
- Samala is Rajput.
- Sarpara may stand for the Saraparai before noticed, as mentioned by Pliny amongst the tribes to the south of Paropamisus.
- Shekh Huseni is evidently the Musalman title and name given to a convert to Islam.
- Son, or Sonari, stands for Soni, mercantile Rajput.
The others are all Kurd or Brahwi clans ; amongst them
- Amal, or Amalari and Tambaranri are both subdivisions of Bizanju Kurd.
- Zigar is a branch of the Mingal, and the two may represent the Hindu Jakhar and Mangal.
Besides the above there is a great number of subdivisions, the names of many of which appear indifferently as Brahwi and Baloch.

Barohi Village is in Dasua or Dasuya tahsil in Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India.
