History

Tej Ram Sharma[5]writes that The Amarakosa mentions Gopa, Gopala, Gosamkhya, Godhuk and Ballava as the synonyms for Abhira and says that the village or place where Abhiras lived is named as Ghosa or Abhirapalli.

Ghosas are mentioned by Cunningham[6] in an inscription at the Buddhist Stupa of Sanchi of the Ashoka period as under:

No. 32. — (Ga) ha-patino Budha Ghosa . . .
" (Gift of) the householder, Budha Ghosha."

Bharhut Inscriptions tell us about Ghosa:

57. Ghosāye dānam. = " Gift of Ghosa." [7]
