Lohitya (लोहित्य) was the eastern-most country known to the people of the epic-age. Lohitya river is identified as the Brahmaputra river, flowing through Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.

Lohitya kingdom existed on the banks of river Brahmaputra known by the name Lauhitya during the epic-age. The Pandava Bhima visited this kingdom during his eastern military campaign to collect tribute for Yudhishthira's Rajasuya sacrifice.

लोहित्य

विजयेन्द्र कुमार माथुर[1] ने लेख किया है ...लोहित्य (AS, p.824) नामक एक प्राचीन स्थान का उल्लेख वाल्मीकि रामायण, अयोध्या काण्ड (71, 15) में हुआ है- 'हस्तिपृष्टकमासाद्य कुटिकामप्यवर्तत ततार च नरव्याघ्नो लौहित्ये च कपीवतीम।' इस स्थान के पास भरत ने केकय देश से अयोध्या आते समय कपीवती नदी का पार किया था। प्रसंग से यह स्थान अयोध्या से अधिक दूर नहीं जान पड़ता।

Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 27 mentions the countries subjugated by Bhimasena. Lohitya (लौहित्य) country is mentioned in Mahabharata (II.27.24). [2]....The mighty (Bhimasena) son of the wind-god having thus conquered various countries, and exacting tributes from them all advanced towards Lohitya.


Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 48 describes Kings who presented tributes to Yudhishthira. Lohitya (लौहित्य) mountain is mentioned in Mahabharata (II.48.8).[3]...I also beheld there numberless chiefs of the Kiratas armed with cruel weapons and ever engaged in cruel deeds, eating of fruits and roots and attired in skins and living on the northern slopes of the Himavat and on the mountain from behind which the sun rises and in the region of Karusha on the sea-coast and on both sides of the Lohitya mountains.


Bhisma Parva, Mahabharata/Book VI Chapter 10 describes geography and provinces of Bharatavarsha. Lohitya River (लॊहित्या) is mentioned in in Mahabharata (VI.10.34). [4].....and Lohitya, Karatoya, and Vrishabhangini (Vrishaka); and Kumari, and Rishikullya and Brahmakulya,....


Anusasana Parva/Book XIII Chapter 26 mentions the sacred waters on the earth. Lohitya River (लॊहित्या) is mentioned in Mahabharata (XIII.26.43).[5].....Bathing with concentrated soul in the tirtha that is called after the name of Urvashi and that is situate in the river Lohitya, on the day of full moon of the month of Kartika, one attains to the merits that attach to the sacrifice called Pundarika.
