Modhera

Modhera (मोढेरा) is ancient village in Mehsana district of Gujarat, India. The town is well known for the Sun Temple of Chaulukya era. The town is located on the bank of river Pushpavati at a distance of 35 km from Mehsana.[1]

History
The town was known as Dharmaranya during Puranic age. It is believed that Lord Rama had performed yagna here to cleanse the sin of killing Brahmin Ravana. He had built Modherak which was later known as Modhera. The Sun Temple was built during the reign of Bhima I of Chaulukya dynasty in 1026-1027 (Vikram Samvat 1083).[2][3]
There is Gyaneshwari stepwell in village which belongs to 16-17th century. It has a shrine at the first pavilion of the stepwell instead of usual at the end.[4]
Modheshwari Mata Mandir
The Modeshwari Mata temple is devoted to Goddess Modeshwari Mata who is said to be an avatar of Goddess Parvati, she is the Kuldevi of the Modh community. The story behind the temple goes about a demon Karnat who was destroying everything in the region, seeking protection the fearful saints went to Goddess Parvati who on hearing about the injustice was infuriated and started unleashing fire from her mouth which gave birth to her avatar Goddess Modheshwari Mata. The sculpture of the goddess in the temple has 18 arms, each bearing a weapon.[5]

मुढेरा, गुजरात, (AS, p.751): प्राचीन सूर्य मंदिर के विशाल खंडहर यहाँ स्थित हैं. जिनसे इस मंदिर की उत्कृष्ट कला का कुछ आभास मिलता है. इस प्राचीन मंदिर को मध्यकाल में मुसलमान आक्रमणकारियों ने ध्वस्त कर दिया था.[6]
मोढेरा,गुजरात
मोढेरा, गुजरात (AS, p.762): यह प्रसिद्ध जैन तीर्थ वर्तमान मुढेरा है. इसका उल्लेख तीर्थमाला चैत्यवंदन में इस प्रकार है-- 'मोढेरे दधिपद्र कर्करपुरे ग्रामादि चैत्यालये' (दे. मुढेरा)[7]
