History
The main town of the district of Mahendragarh, Narnaul seems to be an ancient town but its origin and ancient name are still shrouded in mystery. According to legend Narnaul town belongs to Mahabharat period, then known as Nar Rashtra. It is narrated in the that enroute to the Chambal Valley from Hastinapur, the youngest Pandava brother, Sahdev, gained control over this town. Another one puts it to be about 900 years old, where Lions roamed free in the Jungles here and thus it got the name Naharnaul (Fear of Lions). According to yet another legend, Raja Launkaran named it Narlaun after his wife. While Akbar ruled, he established a mint here, churning out coins for the masses.
At Narnol, on the 2nd Safar, 1193 (19th February, 1779), Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh Kachhwah paid a nazar of one thousand and one ashrajjs to the Emperor Shah Alam II, and received Raj-tika from His Majesty's auspicious hand (Waqa MS. p.321).[3]
