History

Bhim Singh Dahiya has identified this clan with the Rigvedic tribe - Paura : (RV Vlll/3/12) mentions a prince named Paura who was helped by Indra along with Rusam and others. They are descendants of Puru. They are to be identified with Por/Phor/Paur clan of the Jats. It was this tribe which fought against Alexander, under the name Porus in 326 BC. The name Porus was not that of the individual king but name of the tribe because a nephew of Porus is also called Porus. Naturally, they were leaders or representatives of Por tribe.

शग्धी नो अस्य यद ध पौरमाविथ धिय इन्द्र सिषासतः |

शग्धि यथा रुशमं शयावकं कर्पमिन्द्र परावः सवर्णरम || (RV Vlll/3/12)

Bhim Singh Dahiya, whiloe describing history of Kalkils, has mentioned that this is yet another important clan of the Jats which founded an empire in Central India, which was later on called by the name of Vakataka. Under Pravarsena I, they were ruling from Bundelkhand to Hyderabad in the south. Some historians are of the view that his was a Brahman dynasty because Vindhyashakti the founder of this kingdom was a Brahmana. This is entirely wrong. The evidence of the Puranas is definitely against it. Bhau Daji has shown that the Vakatakas were foreigners Visnu Purana expressly says that “When they (Pauras) are destroyed, the Kailakila Yavanas will be kings the chief of whom will be Vindhyashati” Brahmand Puranas says, Tatah Kilakile Dhyascha Vindhyashakti Bhavishyati”.

Here Paura stands for the Por clan of the Jats who are earlier mentioned in the Puranas as ruling in India.

Bhim Singh Dahiya writes....Some authorities have given an opinion that the name Porus has not been derived from Paurava and cannot be equated with this ancient name. "The guess that Porus might be Paurava is not very convincing".¹³⁸ "Porus (is) not to be identified with Paurava but with a derivative of Pura of Ganapatha of Panini.¹³⁹ Thus it is clear that Porus cannot be identified with Paurava or any ancient Indian name. Jayaswal's suggestion that it is related to Pura of Ganapatha of Panini seems to be correct because even today this clan of the Jats is known as Poriya or Phor, the later being the form given by Muslim historians. It seems that Puriya and Phor/Por are one and the same clan, though existing today under both the forms, among the Jats.
