Hmmm...it seems you are in a dilemma as well. The film not a Lord of the Rings is lording over the BO (sniff, sniff. I meant box-office) though.

Well I first heard about the movie on a news channel. The were saying that it had been banned in Iran on the grounds that it was an American propaganda to potray their country as evil.

I couldn't digest that. What on Earth, a movie on ancient pre-Islamic (or for that matter pre-Christianity) Greek history has to do with modernday Iran??

I thought, I must give it a shot. "Watch it only on big screen," advised someone.

To my pleasent surprise my friend, otherwise a stingy bloke, decided to finance the movie! Graveyard show (0000 hrs) and the opening scene was creepy but riveting. So was the movie, in all. Call it a vedio game or too gory, chest-thumping celebrating barvery bordering (or encroaching) stupidity. Bare torsos and ahem..breasts but the fact of the matter is: I liked it. If not for anything else, just for the sheer visual spectacle that the movie was.

Meanwhile Mr Mor, I m not sure whether the guy is a Brazilian. I've heard that Gerard Butler is a Scot.

PS: Even as we discuss 300, the posts on the thread have crossed the 300 mark.

Eyes Wide Shut

Its there in my priority queue though, lets see when will be watching.

Was curious to hear what you guys have to say of the movie, those who have seen. And how different (good/bad) is it from the book its adapted from.

Started reading the book, got stuck lil' after the birth of Gogol...:o But anyway, I'm determined to finish the book first, before I go for the movie..;)

Amazing book. I was totally bowled over. Heard the movie's good. Haven't watched. Waiting for someone to finance it for me. Would you??

Not to mention what a "fine and polished" lift though...

Wondering if you could translate this for us!

Duraye naina banaye batiyan.;) :p

Even I heard all good things about the book.
Actually gifted by a loved one and really wanna read it first before going for the movie..you know..:)
Anyway, yeah I could finance you provided you read out the book to me...:p coz being a slow reader (and shall I admit a lil lazy;) ) its a mammoth task for me. So what do you say..

Duraye naina banaye batiyan.;) :p

I wonder whats "Duraye" here??

Didn't know Iran banned this movie.....well, modern day Iran was sort of persia in the ancient times, so i guess they made the far fetched link...anyway, the movie isn't even about history (let me elaborate my point later)...its all about creativity....I liked Miller's comics based Sin City, so was really looking forward to this one (Especially after the die for clips in the promos of the guy kicking the other guy into the well)....funny enough it reminded me of this artist here who made 3D paintings on the street and he made a well just like that ...like if you're walking on the street and see this out of place well right in the middle and you sort of avoid it :D ...

coming back to the movie, I love the value laden greek mythology based on history....in this particular comic, Miller took just one instance out of greek history and made it fascinating even if not entirely real (but that i guess was not the objective)........loved the graphics, loved the portrayal and yes, loved the 300!;)

P.S. if someone's interested in the movie, they might want to read a little bit about how this battle helped the greek in their war with persia...

P.S2: it was so funny they were calling elephants as monsters...

Eklavya, true to the title of the thread

Couple of good movies for Easter Holidays.
Eklavya, a master piece by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
Yes, true to the title of the thread, a really creative movie
Very well made, crafted frame by frame. And ofcourse,Amitabh again at his best.

Namaste London is another good movie. Katrina kaif is certainly lattest addition to the pool of beautifull and talented actresses of the Bollywood. Akshay Kumar has done a good job again. Also i have 'Guru' in stock as well. So, inspite of not so good review by Poonam, i got to see this as i have already spent $4.00

Guru is an average film inspired by a legendary, Dhirubhai

I saw Guru and found it just an average film that finds inspiration from the life of a legendary Business Guru Dhirubhai Ambani. Although success story of the that Extra Ordinary personality can't be imitated even in the film but some incidents are straight from his story.

Dhirubhai started his career as a Munim (an accountant) in a small oil mill like Guru in the film. Incident like importing a full plant in the garb of spare parts also true. I was living with a Custom Officer friend Jagjeet Shanshanwal those days in Mumbai.Relence was a suspect in the eyes of customs all through the Eighties. It is also true that an inquiry by customs was initiated in this regard as in the film. His rise on the Bombay Stock was also not free from controversies as in the film. Industry giants like Wadias and Hinduajas too tried to halt the rise of Reliance but failed.

The role played by the News Paper in the film was perhaps played by Goenka and his Indian Express.

Anyways the movie is a good try to portray the life and struggle of a great Indian. I wish we could have some movies on Premji and Narayan Murthy who have not only written success stories for themselves but for thousands who worked with them.

The Namesake

Finally went to see the movie yesterday after waiting 2 full weeks.
Disappointed bit as the movie is quite a letdown as compared to the book. made well, but missing the spark, the sustainablity of interest. The character of Gogol( the namesake character) is portaryed as well played well by Kal Penn, whose love-hate, push-pull relationship with his heritage forms the spiritual core of the story. Irfaan Khan is normal, Tabu superb again as usual, thou her age shows in the beginning scenes as a young bride.
Too big n detailed a story to sum up in 2 hrs in a film. May be those who watch without reading book may like it more.
On the whole just Okay kind of movie.

Fantastic movie! LOVED it... 300 the Spartans!

Here is another piece of info to go with what has already been said here- the movie was completely done with the lead actors hashing it out in a big barn like interior studio and the rest of the stuff is supposed to have been added through the blue screen technology!

The movie is actually 'based' on real events about a famous last stand Battle of Thermopylae, Thermoplaye was a beach landing area where at a narrow opening some 300 Spartans and some other loose change soldiers made their last stand against overwhleming odds of conquering Persians...(the legend also goes, that but for being betrayed by the locals that showed the alternative route and helped the Persian army get behind the Spartans; the massive Persian armies would have NEVER made thru that narrow pass....the Spartans were supposedly legendary in close up battle formations and the narrow pass made the mere 300 more of a deadly-killer wall!)

Well, the movie was more of a Historical thriller all in all, no doubt....but man, those graphics were fantastic! It was as if the graphic novel (read the graphic novel comic book....it came before the movie and is ditto to the letter!)...had come to life! (The guy who drew the comic book and was also apparently the advisor to the movie is Frank Miller!)
What amazing sepia colored graphics, very unlike 'Sin City' in terms of colors...! It is what I would say Movies at their best...I don't care about the historical accuracy or authenticity (Persians as monsters and stoneage Rhinos running amok- or that the legendary persian fighters the Immortals were shown with silver masks to add to the horror) or even the political fallouts (Iran is calling it the 'Hollywood jumping into the fray and declaring war!"....nuts, these guys need to get a life! Put aside those rocket launchers, dudes and just watch the movie!)....the movie literally rocks!

ps. [Well, you guys already talked about Gerard Butler, who played the King Leonidas, but man, for me the most striking actor(ess) was the Queen Goro played by Lena Heady....what a woman! I can't wait to watch more of her movies.....]

BTW, for people who enjoyed it, there is another such period drama movie out already that is not the same style but definitely the same genre; it is called 'The Pathfinder'!

Good analysis but Gerald Butler is a scottish guy and not Brazilian.

Kudos to "Happyness"

But from the moment the movie began to the end of it, I was kind of spellbound. Redoubtable Will Smith came up with a performance of a lifetime while the li'l kid, who played his son, gave the seasoned thespian literally a run for his money.
Abundant with hilarious moments when you give a hearty laugh, touchy moments when you just smile and then feel guilty about it coz you ought not to have smiled, the flick just takes your breath away. You'll feel it's a part of your life that is being subjected to on screen narration.

Totally second this review!

A truly honest movie, touches your heart and lingers with you even after you are done with it!!

Indeed! Its one of my favorite movies by a director I totally adore. An excellent piece of work by Martin Scorsese, kept me glued n spellbound till the end. A must watch!

You Maam, have been watching too many movies! :D ...Just kidding! (actually it should be more like look who is talking!)...

Anyways, I am posting on this one cause I just CAN'T simply understand what was such a big deal about 'The Departed'???............

Goshallmighty; they finally decide to give the poor guy (Scorsese) an Oscar for THIS movie(???) when he has done so many brilliant and better other ones in the past!??!
I personally think it was more like, "Here you are mate, before you die of sheer dissappointment!"...I mean come on guys, I agree this was a well done movie no doubt and one could even enjoy it (if you like the mafia type slick thrillers and all the violence that goes along with it), but I for the life of me just wouldn't call it brilliant by any stretch of the imagination....(Please, on top of everything it was a remake for Christs-sake! [of 'Internal Affairs' a Hong-Kong original]......anyways, who am I to deny the poor guy an Oscar, but what a way to go man, tsk! tsk!)

Now back to the movie; so it had a terrific star cast, sure [the Caprio's, Damon's, Whalberg's, Martin Sheen, Baldwin's...etc. etc. (now I personally thought that Jack Nicholson was just too waaaaaaaaay over the top in his portryal of a mafia king-pin...way over! Didn't think he stood out at all, I mean you expect better from a person of his reputation)]..................

The violence (well these are the times to show them full on and that may not be the biggest issue considering the genre of the movie) but it seemed just too realistic, and exccessive for some reason, specially in the final moments!...

Now I think Mark Whalberg would really be the pick of the actors for me in that master parade, (but the dude really was just playing a real bad ass Bronx local cop, what more would you expect), but in any case the fact that he did it to the hilt and with perfection is sorta commendable....

Anyways, to me really all the hype was just too bigger than the movie and to have it splashed all over the place during the Oscars was a bit too much to take. I give Martin Scorsese a 'good' on this one....but not a 'Brilliant' when compared to his 'Aviator', 'Gangs of New-York', 'Cape fear, 'Taxi Driver', 'Casino', or even (oh, come on) the brilliant 'Goodfellas'!!!

Yeah I think it may be confusing for some because the guy who plays the Giant pompous Persian King Xerxes in the movie (a guy by the name of Rodrigo Santoro) is actually the one who is a Brazilian.
(See attachment)
BTW: He too did an awesome job on the portrayal though; his whole persona did come out nicely creepy and slimey evil....

well jatland the movie 300 is simply awesome, I just felt like those 300 warrirors r the real jat warriors.....the spartans jats!!

historians kindly pay attention...!!

im not in a jolly mood but indeed the movie should be renamed to something like 300 Jat warriors!!

Totally my views....plus the original version 'infernal affairs' was in my opinion much well done (for those interested there is like a series of the movie infernal affairs...although in cantonese, they are still very watchable with the subtitles)....

Ditto for Whalberg......did anyone see shooter...man, i should be in the movie business for the time i spend watching them...

I give it 5/5 :D

I would not go as far as terming spartans as jats...:D but agree that spartans did have similarities to jat communities....they had a simple way of life, minded their business and believed in honor and freedom, which compared to their jazzy greek and other counterparts was unique.....thats where the phrase comes from...the spartan way of life.....the simplicity...

But for your omission of his chef-d'oeuvre Raging Bull (was that deliberate? ), the whole analysis couldn't have been more apt.
