Creative Movies of all Times

Pan's Labyrinth

This movie, my dear Jatland people, is easily one the most wonderful films I have seen in a long time.

Pan's Labyrinth is sorta dark fairy tale for adults, a movie by the now famous Director from Spain- Guillermo del Toro, who won the oscar for this offing. it's ingenious, creative, well directed, acted, and has some great special effects...
[A minor setback; and I don't know if it should even be called that- is that the whole movie is in Spanish with English subtitles. Sorta-kinda like 'Hidden dragon couching tiger']

Now of course, without giving away the story (don't worry I got your back!;)), which unfolds wonderfully right from the start, it's the tale of a girl who lives in a land of fairy tales while the French fascist regime is fighting the last rebels in the hills, as the setting or background for the movie.
I found the film quite masterfully executed and totally mesmerizing all the way till the amazing ending. However, that being said, and like I already mentioned- this film is NOT for children (or for sensitive adults for that matter). As there are some quite graphic violent scenes! But still, nothing that would make you turn away from the mesmerizing tale and/or craving to know what happens next......The fairies and the magical world shown in the movie are whimsical and just brilliantly conceived, with some stunning visual effects and a production design that has layers upon layers of details!

It's simply a beautiful and poignant (as it's really a very, very dark movie, an adult nightmare, not an adult fairytale) movie– So Overall; VERY highly recommended to anyone who is reading this!!!

Totally second this review....this movie was enchanting...saw it on a tiring flight but it was so good it kept me awake....It also reminds of hundred years of solitude by Garcia........think it was the spanish fascist...the girl has acted so well...

Mob/Mafia movies and Courtroom Dramas

I invite discussion on the following genere of movies :

Mob/Mafia Movies.

Courtroom Dramas.

I here list some best ever mafia movies and courtroom dramas.

I have always been a great fan of above mentioned types of movies.

"Godfather 1" is well regarded as the best ever mafia movie.

I put "Goodfellas" on the same footing. If you are a fan of mafia movies, just
make sure you watch "goodfellas". Following them are " Casino", "The Untouchables" , "Scarface" and "Donnie Brasco". "Godfather 2" is again a great movie but "Godfather 3" doesnt meet the expectaions. But then thats because we compare it with 1 and 2, otherwise its good.

These are the best ever mafia movies and a mafia movie fan will just love watching them. And yes, the only mafia comedy i watched, "Analyse this- di nero", i dont recommend.

Courtroom Dramas!!!

"To Kill the mockingbird" is the best. There are others but they just cant compete with this movie.

A few Good Men- (depicts court martial) is a very good movie.

12 angry men and primal fear are again among the best courtroom movies.

thanks.

Good idea Gaurav!

Not exactly a courtroom drama but highly related is one of my all time favourite movie 'Erin Brokovich' (didn't know if i spelt the last name right)...its a great movie of a person finding her call in life and overcoming initial incompetence and lack of knowledge with sheer hardwork to excel in the field for herself and for others.....Suggest everyone watch it...especially in the wake of nobody responding to RKji's clean river initiative!!

Borat was an absolute idiot............NAAAWWWWT...:D:D..

Well, you gotta watch the movie to appreciate my trying to be funny here...hehehhe..

Kabir is right, its a riot,a gross-out humor!!Will easily let you topple off your chair, surely more than once.

There are scenes and dialouges you would have , I bet, never ever imagined that you might actually watch/hear in your life..hehehhe.Too good. Cohen, the guy acting Borat, himself Jew though, making fun of jew and then THE "nude fight scene" Goshhhh..:D:D.you gotta watch it!!
Packed with foul-comedy but amazing..!!

This movie was amazing...paaaaz.......................................naaawt.

Having seen some Borat pieces on YouTube, I was never going to watch
a full length movie of his.

But on reading Poonam's review I was suckered into watching it.
And, o' man, what a utter piece of trash! It was completely devoid
of any humor at all (I forced myself to laugh in a couple of scences
just to somehow make it through the movie). Just competely lame attemps
at tickling the funny side of the Americans (and I am sure it must have
worked for many of them, no doubt). It just wasn't funny! The
liberal use of sexual "sh*t" (and in one scene, literally) just was so
completely flat and tasteless.

This guy was annoyingly lame.

Priti,

Erine Brokovich is indeed a great movie and if i remember correctly, julia roberts won oscar for her role in the movie. Well, we ll include this movie in the courtroom drama category. I think all movies which are based on court trials or litigations ll fall in this category, though there can be action involved,

One such movie is "Runaway Jury", starring Dustin Hoffman, Gene Heckman, john cusak. Its based on trial against gun companies in U.S.A.

Shootout misfires

A movie that promised a lot but, in the end, failed to deliver. It began with a bang (triggered by an LPG cylinder ) but ended in a whimper.

Come and think of it: twice in the movie the cops and baddies run short on ammunition, at the same time! And in one of the scences in the climax, all three policemen resorted to fist-fighting with the gangsters separately but, again, at the same time! Not entirely unbelievable, agreed but difficult to digest. This dramatisation of events ruined it all for me.

A little after he escapes a rocket launcher attack, Sanjay Dutt refuses to wear bullet-proof jacket even as he storms into the building where Maya and Co are hinding. What are they trying to show?? Needless songs, crap melodrama where gangsters, staring in the face of death, make phone calls to their families and below par acting by one and all.

In acting department, Vivek Oberoi was bad among worse (Amitabh being worst of them all alongside Akhilendra Mishra of Kroor Singh fame).

But I must concede that the movie was a stroy well told. Amazing cinematography, well-concieved and brilliantly-executed shots made the movie worth watching. But I still feel a little doing away with dramatisation and an improved starcast with better dialogues could have made it truly standout.

Watch out Shootout at Lokhandwala on Saturday nite !!

Movie is awesome based on real incident. They have not shown full reality lot of masalas .Vivek ( Maya ) is good as expected he can act such roles. Baba ( Inspector Khan ) is awesome as no doubt. Anna ( Shetty ) is standy character always in Sanjay Gupta's film. Only downfall is Buwa ( Tushar ) he is a crap.. i dont know when he will learn to act. God saves him.

Sunil Shetty reveal the fact when Tushar beats him first time on sets of SOAL. Shetty laughs on him as he feels no pain when Tushar try to punch him.In the end part of movie when Shetty blow a hand on Tushar face he had 2 stiches on his forehead.

Ayee Ganpat ....chal daruu la .... MIKA u did it again ..

Sunil Shetty & Vivek Oberoi was too awesome.....I noted one thing u give Vivek any choclate luver roll n he look so funny n crap in those....n if u give him badboy roll n he do it in style.....take company, omkara n now Shootout....he was awesome!

but that Tushar kappor spoiled the whole movie....I dont know why did Gupta took that jacka$$ in the movie!!

but anyways all in all a gud watch....enjoyed it to the fullest!!!

Rock on
Jit

Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End

All the three movies are such that one enjoys them more the second time...on dvd...thats what happened to me while watching the third one in the theatre...i knew I'll enjoy it more at home on dvd...the one i'll own and can play repeatedly to understand all the nuances......there's a lot of plot in the movie.....go for it!!

Babel

Did I say Babel....:)

Dont know if someone mentioned this masterpiece here in this thread. Wow, an incredible movie. The whole idea of, not just telling multiple stories simultaneously, but also tying them together with something common in all of 'em was a totally incredible knock out.

How beautifully the movie connects and binds people belonging to four different groups segregated by cultural and geographical barriers, yet all of 'em share "pain" as a common factor. Definitely, would stir you up!

Babel(!?!)...What was it about?

...I somehow was pretty let down with this overhyped (overrated at the Oscars too) movie (sorry Poons, just my take)...

Was the idea; simply that all Mexicans are just 'bad', illegal immigrants, running drunk and scared of authorities... or that teenagers in Japan are walking around as frustrated nymphos/pyschos, and that nowadays in these troubled times every Arab kid's (even the ones from the poorest of farming families) favorite passtime is popping bullets at moving targets???... [lastly; not to mention that while Americans would happily go on a tour into deep middle-east, but will make a run for the border at the drop of a hat when one of their fellow citizen is in deep trouble?]

I frankly dunno what the message of the movie really was...sure they bound all the stories together fine, but big deal; but then maybe I missed the whole point! [Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett were purely wasted in the movie and I suspect were added to pull in the unsuspecting crowds!]

In the end must say that it was in fact really a lot of 'babble' of voices, places and bizzare scenes for me... a babble that somehow seemed shocking and left you in a melancholic mood at the end, with no real moral to the story behind those seemingly connected numerous parallel tracks...

...The movie's plot was definitely quite confusing and too much to comprehend at one go! (so ok who was finalized as the captain of which ship again?...anyone? You Calypso?...no?...)

In fact must say was also quite intrigued to watch those intent, deadly and die-hard sword fights peppered in there between people that supposedly cannot die(!?!)...anways, these days anything goes to produce the thrill I guess!

Back to Borat

I see Borat, meant to tickle their funny bone, rubbed a quite a few members the wrong way. But the movie worked exceedingly well for me. And Sacha Cohen, call him whatever you may, has another distiction to his credit. He's given most hilarious acceptance speech I've ever heard.

After winning the Golden Globe award for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical this is what he had to say (reader's discretion is advised):

''I want to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press. And I just want to say that this movie was a life-changing experience. I saw some amazing, beautiful, invigorating parts of America. But I saw some dark parts
of America, an ugly side of America. A side of America that rarely sees the light of day.

I refer, of course, to the anus and testicles of my co-star, Ken Davitian.

[Davitian shrugs and raises a wine glass]

Ken, when I was in that scene and I stared down and saw your two wrinkled golden globes on my chin, I thought to myself, 'I better win a bloody award for this.'

And then when my 300-pound co-star decided to sit on my face and squeeze the oxygen from my lungs, I was faced with a choice: Death or to breathe in the air that had been trapped in a small pocket between his buttocks for 30 years.

Kenneth, if it was not for that rancid bubble, I would not be here today.

(ends)

Allow me I correct you, the movie wasn't overhyped...it was GROSSLY overhyped!

Even I failed to understand the message (Not that I am blessed with more brains than you, Hooda ji. Just that I, quite often, tend to imagine things which are sometimes not even meant ;)).

The movie begins on a promising note. I must admit, I liked the Moroccan part of the story. That was quite believable too. But that ''Mexican'' angle was quite a let down while, the part of the story (if there was any) in Japan was absolutely superfluous.

Besides the you mentioned, I was not able to understand what the f*** the Japanese hunter was doing in the sands of, of all, Morocco??!! Hunting jackals or camels or, better still, scorpions with his .207 caliber rifle?

If I were to go on a hunting expedition in Africa (although I claim to be an environmentalist and wildlife conservationalist), I would prefer to remain south of Sahara.

Regarding his deaf n mute girl, all I can say is she should make a trip to India. Our Autowallah and guides would prove infinitely more generous than the dentists and cops back their in Japan.

Lastly, I would request you all those who've watched the movie to tell me what the logic behind naming the movie Babel -- If I m not wrong it refers to the ancient city of Babylon??

My piece of advice: watch a bollywood movie by the name of 'Babul'. It might just prove a lesser evil;):D.
