Shawshank is too good

I loved Shawshank Redemption, one of the all time best definitely. What makes this film one of the best ever made is the message it conveys. It is one of eternal hope. This is a pure, yet thrilling tale of hope, friendship and belief. The story is executed brilliantly, with intense characterisation from both sides of the spectrum- you become the character, and go through his struggles with him, and you hate the warden and his captain with a passion. This film is absolutely fantastic. The sheer complexity of the plot, the twists, the character development, the ending, everything leaves you spellbound. You can sort of understand why it got nominated for so many Oscars.

Some of my other favorites are;

Memento: If you're looking for something intense, suspenseful, and different than your usual effects-packed thriller, this is the one of the best you will see ever. It is about a man suffering from short-term memory loss who uses notes and tattoos to hunt for the man he thinks killed his wife. Memento is truly a rare and exceptional achievement in modern filmmaking in that it manages to be new, fresh, hip, and exciting without ever tiring its audience out - unless you're walking into this film without the desire to participate and actively analyze the mysterious details. It is brilliant story telling. But you might get frustrated because you don't know what's going on. That's normal. In fact, that's the whole idea. Just sit back, try to relax (though that's difficult in this movie), and find out just how twisted, frustrating and complex world could be. Memento is still a unique mystery thriller. It is a tantalizing experience we do not often come across at the movies.

Schindler’s List: An amazing heart touching true story on world war-II. Schindler's List is not only a pure masterpiece but it is one of the greatest films ever made in the world. Steven Spielberg was not paid for this film. He refused to accept a salary citing that it would be blood money

American History X

For the romantic ones;
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (A nice movie despite starring Jim Carrey )
The Notebook (as already pointed out by Priti)

If you like comedies then I can recommend Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and
Snatch. These two are absolutely hilarious. Check out Brad Pitt’s accent in Snatch, too good to be true.
Got to lay my hand upon........(you guessed it wrong;))..... The Shawshank Redemption, one really good movie about a man sentenced for a crime he didn't do and spent 19 years in jail. Stellar performances by Mogan Freeman and Tim Robbins.

Try Hotel Rwanda as well, if you have not. Not a Schindler's List exactly but a fantastic movie nonetheless on a similar subject.

Don't be mistaken by the title. It is no musical with mellifluous guitar tunes that can almost intoxicate you, a la Hotel California. The similarity ends at the word "Hotel" and the essence of the film is as far from the Eagles chartbuster as is California from Rwanda -- lightyears apart, that is.

The flick is about simmering tensions between the Tutsi and Hutu tribes in Rwanda and the President's murder adds the fuel to fire. Majority, the Hutus, becomes hell-bent to wipe out the former (who are historically more prosperous) from the country.

The Holocaust captured people's imagination partly because it happened to the Jews -- a powerful and predominantly European/white race -- but the genocides in various parts of Africa be that Darfur or elsewhere, even as I write and you read, go as unnoticed as if they are not even taking place. All because it the Blacks who are at the recieving end.

But hold on, the movie is not just about this paradox. It is also about one man's heroism against "his" people to save "others", about the futility of ethnic chauvinism (and India is no exception).

Don Cheadle's act is simply superb, sort of the cherry on top (I wonder if it is apt for me to use the phrase in this context) in this movie that shook me to the core.

Agree in toto with this review.

An African story and another version of Schindler's list. Leaves you on a pretty similar catatonic note.

Indeed a powerful movie, shakes you to the core and puts you face to face with the ugly callous face of humankind!

Well directed, wonderful acting, well done movie!

Thanks to this review, got this movie...had to take the flak from some friends who were like...what a c-grade movie name and all...told them to be patient (half fearing and doubting the reviewer's words here...atleast I'm being honest :-))...told them to be patient and wait for the plot to begin...and guess what...this turned out to be the diamond in a coal mine...a special comment on Dharmendra is deserved...unlike his more famous peer (you know who)...his acting in recent movies has been much sensible in comparison...the new dude in this movie is good too...hope he continues on this creative path as opposed to getting entangled in the bollywood mimics...

It is really unfortunate that a movie like this one bombs at the BO with few taking a notice it while others -- bullshit served in the name of motion pictures and I am referring to the likes of Partner, Heyy Baby and that HR's...I forgot its name et al -- go on to become "blockbusters".

Move over Chak de (nothing to take away from it. An inspirational flick!), in Johhny Gaddar, we have the best flick of the year thus far. An out and out thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat most of time, in fact, all the time.

The movie is about an underworld deal gone awry when a gang member ditches others and decides to take it all.

Eh Hasina thi, showed Sriram Raghvan knows how to make a movie, a brilliant movie, I mean, and in JG he has just raised the bar. Too early to say but it seems he's Bollywood's answer to well...Alfred Hitchcock.

And it is not just the direction, acting and cinematography as well are equally compelling. And the way Raghvan has connected events is just superb, a la Quentin Tatantino.

The only part which comes as a cropper is the film's protagonist. Contrary to many a film reviewers who has waxed eloquent on Neil Mukhesh, the debutant thespian needs to hone is acting skills a lot. If only Sriram would've cast Saif Ali Khan instead.

The rest have done a wonderful job. Dharam paaji is good, but Vinay Pathak is great.

A piece of advice: Things don't make much sense in the first half an hour so don't jump the gun and leave the hall. 'Coz you won't know what you've missed.

North Country

Catch a flu ...and what do you do...rest at home and watch movies :)

So this was my time to catch up on some movies. North Country- finally caught up with it...a very emotional movie (Disclaimer: a female AND ill reviewer).

Based on a true story of a woman who wants to make life for herself and her children by working at a iron ore mine in minnesota...has to go through more harassment than open pits from her fellow workers who perceive her (and other female workers) as threats to their jobs...

The movie shows the case that set precedence for workplaces around the world to adopt policies on harassment...

Couldn't have chosen a better actress than Charlize Theron to portray the role of this sensitive yet strong woman (who wouldn't take crap without resistance)...overall a nice movie on a relevant topic...but dont watch it if you just want a good timepass...

Right Sis...

A hidden gem- The Notebook...if I say anything more, it might just spoil your experience of watching this one...so...three words- go for it...

You are right, saw "The Notebook: ..very nice and a great love story, moves you and leaves you on such an emotional note. Well, all those for romantic love stories, go for it.... .indeed!

Well, you know this character of the ol' Allie (played by Gena), suffering frm dementia invariably kept on reminding me of another character in a very close theme movie "Iris" (won an Oscar and nominated for others) and I felt a connection between the two. Iris, as the name of the movie, played by Judy Dench, remember M in Casino Royale) suffered from Alzheimers in the old age. Iris as Allie in Notebook was truly supported by her husband during her battle for life/death/memory loss in the old age. Fabulous movie. You gotta feel them

You sure will love Iris if you liked Notebook.

One thing, IMO the movies like these shouldnt be watched critically, just feel 'em!

Nice one Poonam! I have been meaning to watch Iris for a long time...thanks for reminding me of it...will definitely go and get it one of these days....

Bb & Lcmd

Saw Bhoolbhulaiyaa n Laga Chunri mein Daag this weekend....

LCMD is abt average .... some scenes, some part of movie turned out very well, the emotions well portrayed,,, the conflicts n pain of Rani Mukherji,,n sply of the mother,(jaya bachchan),,,,how she cudn't enjoy any thereafter a stressed talk with her daughter.....bt i feel jaya bachchan has similar expressions most of the times... some other actress wud ve done a better job. the worst part of the movie is towards the end... so abrupt goodie goodie The Ending...jaise bhi theek thaak si movie thi.. end mein satyanaash hi ker diya.

Now BB... WOW its mast movie... very entertaining... had fun n real laughter in some scenes... Akshay is superb in his comedy. Light comic thriller. if think of story at the end of day,,, not a gr8 story... bt the 3 hrs were sheer FUN n thts all matters. Vidya Balan also proved her act towards the end. Paresh rawal as usual... BUT for the first time I was disappointed by Shiney... :( kya ho gaya usse.... perhaps he's good only for the intense roles. Towards end it stretches,,,, bt then Vidya Balan's dance n acting keep yu holding. Few scenes will leave yu laughing out loud ,, literally...HHKLP. Rest yu check out urself.

Thank you....would have missed ..if not for you..heheh

Thanks for this! Saw the movie and was not disappointed. Quite liked the movie. Blame the name and not so high profile star cast that it failed to attract people as much.

Pretty much felt like I’m watching a movie of 70s which was actually incredible. This Neil dude, though needs to groom a bit more on acting front, but had done a decent job (not to mention how cool …no no...wait …how hot he looks..;)).

And I totally agree with you, had it been Saif, the movie could have made among the top ones of the year..true!
