Our anger is justified and righteous but we must go beyond this anger and look for solutions. The problem is spreading its tentacles far and wide and this problem of terrorism doesnt remain just a problem anymore rather it has become a disease. Our condition has become precarious because we are constantly at the recieving end of this menace. We criticise, criticise and criticise but unfortunately do nothing. There are several steps that can be taken to contain this problem of terrorism. Its not that the case has become hopeless, its only that our apathatic goverment makes it hopeless. Some of the steps that can be taken are...

Having a more coercive diplomacy so that we dont come across as a weak state.

Roping in international support which can build pressure on a state like Pakistan to make it more accountable, responsible and freed of jihadi elements.
Do you really think its possible? Even countries like US UK they want India to get busy with Pak so that they will continue with a big hold in ASIA. Did US looked for any other pressure or support when he started his activity against Afganistan?

Making our own defence stronger with a federal agency to take care of terror cases which operate at national level and having a sufficient security force to deal with such attacks and positioned throughout the country so that it can be procured without delay.

Agree but don't you think that we already investing a lot of money in security issue a big part of our budget is always kept for Safety and security every year, if 50% of that amount would be invested in some other areas will it not be fruitfull for our devlopment? But in these circumstances we have to do. Think if Pak would have not been here or will not be here in future what we can achieve with that huge amount.

Dealing with social issues of unemployment, poverty, injustice etc which bred resentment among people and thus prepare ground for terror to erupt.

Something can't be controled with such a huge Population and low literacy
rate.

Common people must be trained to prevent and deal with security threats as happens in many countries. Its similar to Eyes and Ears scheme of Delhi Police.
Very difficult as you can see Samar rightly said people are in a deep sleep. People here in India doesn't have time they don't even stop to see a person who is dying on a road. People in India are suffering from the disease called lack of Awareness even if u r aware of things u don't want to take pain to fight against that because of any reason.

But Poonam G all the points are valid and need to be consider for any improvement. But i m still in favour of destroying PAK.

My dear members, if one feels that there is no use reading the inputs put forward by various members and thinks that every thing should be CONCLUDED at Jatland...even the election of US president than i feel we are in for a big disappointment.I for one find lot many good things in diverse views expressed by the people out here.We are part of the world...a tiny part and not the rulers of this planet and hence have to operate in those limitations...It is foolish to assume that all ills of this world will be taken care of by the mortals of Jatland.Let us not try to show the undesired frustrations for nothing.Read on and move on....even if one finds the things time pass.At least some people are scratching their heads to pen down their feelings. Do your bit in practical life and move on....every thing has positives if we have the brains to grasp it.God blesss all!

Yes its possible..Pakistan is just another country on the political map. No country can afford to go on if its excommunicated from the international community. US provides a huge aid to Pakistan..such aids can be withhold if Pakistan doesnt correct its way. Things have changed today and US foreign policy is no more in grip of communist phobia as it used to be some years back. This is the reason why Indo-US relations have improved so much today. What impact can international pressure have on political matters is visible in the recent incident of ban on Jamat ul Dawa in Pakistan. It happened because of the hard stance adopted by US.

Well spending and spending wisely are two very different things. In the recent Mumbai terror attacks the NSG commandos could not be taken to the site in time because the only aircraft to transport them was not available. See its never a wise thing to spend on weaponary instead of development but then we dont live in a utopian world. To keep ourselves safe, so that we can survive to develop and progress, we need to invest on and organise our defence properly. We need to first survive in order to progress.

Something can't be controled with such a huge Population and low literacy

China's population is much more than ours but still its far ahead of us giving us lessons on how to develop even with a huge population. There are countries with population much less and still they are not as developed.

Very difficult as you can see Samar rightly said people are in a deep sleep. People here in India doesn't have time they don't even stop to see a person who is dying on a road. True ! People are in deep sleep but till when will they sleep? Some day they will rise up. Awareness can be brought and believe me its not that difficult. Apathatic attitude has to be changed and will change some day. I can understand the pessimism such incidents bring in us. We become hopeless and think that nothing can improve. But there always are possibilities for change !
But Poonam G all the points are valid and need to be consider for any improvement. But i m still in favour of destroying PAK.
I can understand your anger Nishant...its natural to feel it. But wars bring only destruction and have much larger connotations than we can think in the moment of anger.

Poonam ji very balanced and sensible.Keep that flow on.

But beleive me to get things better we have to face some more terrorist attacks. And i want and wish that no more terrorist attack on us pls. We don't want to fight with anyone leave us alone and let us live happily.

For me its always better to dominate rather than look for survival and its its purely my personal view.

China's population is much more than ours but still its far ahead of us giving us lessons on how to develop even with a huge population. There are countries with population much less and still they are not as developed.

Mam they could have done it because now they are able to get a good control over growing rate of population and i not seeing any improvement here in India. And about the line quoted in red then we do have countries like Somalia, afganistan where we will get worst terrorist conditions. So pls don't look at lower side see on high, see who is better than us and why? Where do we need change?

Yes we will awake some day but i afraid it will take a long. Awareness can be bought with quality education only. And Education can provided to a controled population.

I can understand your anger Nishant...its natural to feel it. But wars bring only destruction and have much larger connotations than we can think in the moment of anger.

Mam even i don't want the war but i m not able to see any other better solution and the solution u r providing is the same that we relying on from past 60 years.:(

If u find entire India sleeping then I think u r also sleeping.. Aren’t u? showing ur immature anger doesn’t show that u r awaken or responsible.. let me tell u every Indian ( chai wala, majdoor, farmer, business man, profession and so called young one including u nd me )talks a lot and express their anger but this anger is limited to discussion only…immature & irresponsible

U talk about destroying Pakistan but have u ever imagined the amount of destruction it will bring to our own country, don’t forget that Pak is a nuclear power and when the question of existence will arise Pak will not hesitate to use the nuclear arsenal….

Man, get the priorities right, we need to get our own security system tightened and need to correct our political system so that we could play our cards well in international form to gain the diplomatic support.. nd fortunately there have been some positive development on this side

Well Nishant, they are controlling their population but still their population is more than ours. And if they can control their population and move ahead on the path of development than why cant we. So you see yourself that the conditions of countries like Afghanistan are bad irrespective of their low population. Besides its wrong to say that there is no improvement...improvement is definitly there though at a slower pace. I will give an example...
According to 1961 census - 40% males and only 15% females were literate.
Now look at 2001 census - 76% males are literate and 54% females are literate.
So improvement has been there and today India is considered as a force to reckon by the whole world.

Yes we will awake some day but i afraid it will take a long. Awareness can be bought with quality education only. And Education can provided to a controled population.
You are right..awareness can be brought with education. Education cannot be limited by a huge population base though it will require more effort. If population to be educated is more than the workforce too is more and there can be many people to volunteer in the task of educating illiterates.

Mam even i don't want the war but i m not able to see any other better solution and the solution u r providing is the same that we relying on from past 60 years.:(
The solutions i have highlighted are known to all. The problem is not with these solutions rather the problem is that these solutions have not been implemented properly in the last 60 years.

Are Indians Cowards,Selfish or simply Blind

The siege on Mumbai left even the most experienced of us stunned. Even those who have become immune to grief and tragedy stopped for a
second. The 48-hour encounter with these extremely sophisticated and trained terrorists of Pakistani origin left India burning in every
sense of the word. The versions and accounts are endless. Trying to quantify people's grief would not only be futile but indeed low down.

People who went for their daily evening session of beer and gossip at the Leopold café, that special once a month dinner at the Taj or for
the bitter sweet occasion of farewell at CST Station never returned.

This isn't the first time we're hearing about something like this. These stories have been talked about through out this year and to be honest through out our lives. We have experienced five separate series of bomb blasts across the country in this year alone. The dreadful cries of the Gujarat riots are yet to recede from recent memories. The 2006 and 1993 Bombay blasts and riots haunt their victims even now.

However, we are not here to talk about the grief that these victims suffer. Nor do I wish to discuss the various and repeated intelligence failures and lackadaisical attempts of the government and its security agencies. We are here to figure out what exactly is wrong with us, because it is evident that there is something horribly amiss in this country and it's people.

People are not born terrorists. Teenagers do not get up one fine day with the conviction that violence is the path of their lives. The terrorist that battled with NSG in the Taj hotel for over 24 hours was not more that 25 years old. Can any of you imagine the kind of courage and determination that this young boy exemplified in accomplishing such a feat. He is a terrorist, a terrorist who is responsible for the death of over 150 people. He is also a mere boy. A boy whom we have
forced into becoming the man he died as. The Indian mujahidin consists of young boys from the JMI College in Delhi. Sadhvi Pragya is in her early twenties. These people are our age. They are people who we see in movie halls and at street corners. They are not aliens of another race. Terrorism was not brought in from Mars. It breeds within us. The worst part is, that we created it.

Every kind of terrorism stems from extremism; and extremism is the most obvious ramification of discrimination. Discrimination is sadly practiced in every nook and corner of our country. We think it's insignificant, we think that it's just the way people are. But it is discrimination and if only we were brave enough to face it.

It is discrimination when the age-old story of Hindu parents refusing to marry their daughter into a Muslim family repeats itself. It is discrimination when parents of Muslim children refuse to sing Hindu bhajans. It is discrimination when Christians refuse to participate in Hindu and Muslim festivals. All of this is discrimination. And every form of terrorism and extremism finds it's roots in this kind of discrimination, which is practiced in each and every one of our homes. That is why we need to look at our homes and our thinking before we cry out in rage and protest against the government and security forces.

Last night you had emotional and angry Mumbai mobs screaming out anti Pakistani slogans. That is the beginning of terrorism. Have we all gone mad? What does the normal Pakistani family who is probably in their own way praying for the Mumbai victims have anything to do with this? This is the quintessential problem that we are facing. When will we realize that by blaming each other the problem will only intensify.

The Hindus destroyed the Babri masjid. The Muslims blew up a Hindu coach. The Hindus killed a city full of Muslims. Wave after wave of madness. Stop! How long can we go on like this? An eye for an eye has never been the answer and it should not take us a thousand years to accept the truth of this statement.

You had Raj Thakare chasing out the north Indians and Biharis from Maharashtra. Over three hundred North Indians of the NSG saved his beloved Marathi manoos. Where was Bal Thakare then? Forget about this one man, where were the rest of our cosmopolitan Mumbaikers who let this man get away with what he did.. Where were the progressive and peaceful Hindu leaders when churches burnt in Orissa and Karnataka? We should all hang our heads in shame.

In another 60 years we'll have Bihari terrorists attacking Maharashtra and Maharashtrian terrorist retaliating. Next we'll have border security squadrons for our state borders. Don't smile skeptically. The India-Pakistan feud had also started off in 1947 with Muslims being chased out of Delhi and Hindus being chased out of Lahore. Look where it stands now.

Today you have every news channel proudly acclaiming the army, NSG and Marine commandos as heroes. People in Mumbai are running out on the
streets to congratulate them. These heroes weren't born today. They have been here all this while. Where were these people of India, the Media, when the IAS used their Machiavellian minds to reduce the salaries of all the Defence Forces. Where were these people when the corporate world squabbled over a few hundred rupees rise in the salaries of these men who always risk their lives to keep us safe? I could not see the bureaucracy putting their life on the line to save
hostages in the Trident. I did not see the corporate world dying at the border during the Kargil war. And I did not see Indian citizens who today call these soldiers heroes defending them when they needed us the most.

You want to know what the problem with India is? We're cowards. We don't think as a single nation and we can't stand up for what's right.

I'll give you a small and perfect example of what is wrong with us. We all complain about this country's dirty roads. We love holidaying in Sydney's spick and span streets. The most educated of us are yet to hesitate while throwing a sweet wrapper or lays packet on the street. Or we'll throw it in an already existing dump on the street. We can't even wait till we come across a dustbin. This is what is wrong with us.

We have enough and more to say about Manmohan Singh and Advani and every other useless politician and rightly so. But the fact is that in all honesty we couldn't care less. The best of us don't vote, don't contest in elections and don't even help out N.G.O.s When we can't do anything for our country how dare we, I repeat, how dare we expect anyone else to do anything.

We can go on talking about stepping up security, straightening out our coast guards and eradicating terrorism. But the problem lies not in our security system but in us. It lies in our madrassas, in our temples, in our schools in our homes and in our minds. And until we realize our role, until we open our eyes to this truth, not a thing will change.

Everyone talks about this new India, a shining progressive and young India. Well it's time for Young, New and Shining India to prove herself. Stand up and prove your worth. This so- called liberal and progressive thinking generation needs to root out those weeds that grow in the oldest corners our gardens. We need to start thinking and start talking. Talking to ourselves and to others. We need to start doing. This has to be a national youth movement. We have to make it
the beginning of a revolution. Every historic movement starts like this. Vague, uncertain and hesitant but moving towards a common calling motivated by the same inspiration and dream. This is our chance.

Don't tell me that we won't be able to reach out to the people who need to hear what we have to say. These people live among us. There is no limit to what people can achieve when they set out to do something. You are talking about a country whose founding father won a war without raising a weapon. Who have lived on stories of Subhash Chandra Bose calling out for blood and promising freedom. Well we've bled. Now it's time to get our freedom. Freedom from our own mindsets. Freedom from shackles we've placed on ourselves.

These last two days have been the worst attack that India has ever dealt with. If this alarm wasn't loud enough, no alarm will ever wake us up.

How many more people have to die before we respond to India's desperate plea for help?

No merit in discussing

Sorry to point out that the title is a bit misleading. Indians are neither cowards, nor selfish nor blind – though it is true of today’s leaders who are governing India. This article has many self-contradictions in itself, being written by a 15-year old schoolgirl from Bangalore:

A sheer copy-paste from another website hardly merits it for serious discussion which is going on, on this very topic, in a couple of other threads.

what do people achieve in copy/paste and just filling massive storage.

Looks like indulging in pessimism has become a national obsession since the Mumbai attacks. I feel the anger expressed by Shweta and Samar through beautiful (for lack of a better word) words. But I think we are exaggerating it a bit. And I have no patience for the rabble rousing speech given below. I don't want to over-analyse it, but just take one statement "Every kind of terrorism stems from discrimination" and the examples of social taboo against inter-religion marriages, etc. given as the rationale. If discrimination results in terrorism, then all human beings are terrorists. It is natural for any living being to discriminate. Say 2 guys propose to a girl and she chooses one (or rather discriminates against the other). So would the other guy go and blow himself up? There are definitely forms of discrimination (based on caste, religion, sex, etc.) that need to be opposed wholeheartedly. But to argue that THAT is the cause of terrorism is ridiculous. I know so many people who dislike Muslims and who would discriminate against them in matters such as marriage. But none of them has proceeded to become a terrorist. Trying to rationalize terrorism is a big folly. There would always be maniacs who would pursue their own agenda (read Lakhvi and co) and there would always be idiots who would fall into that trap (read Qasab and co). A 25 year old sane man can't be influenced to kill 150 people by an event that took place in another town, another country when he was 8 years old. To romanticize this idiot with words like "courage" and "determination" is blasphemous. He had nothing better to do in life- Jihadis found him, gave him good food, clothes and an objective. One can only imagine how wretched this guy's life would have been that he caught on to this objective.

As I said, I do empathise with the helplessness which many of us feel. But let's not over-do it. Just because some idiots blow themselves up doesn't make Indians cowards or blind or asleep. For all its worth as super power, the US couldn't prevent the worst terrorist attack ever. In fact, the entire nation was subsequently gripped by paranoia, which still exists to an extent. To argue that they havenot suffered another strike BECAUSE they changed their national character is to overlook the fact that they are not easily accessible for terrorists. In fact, it takes a lot of courage to get into the same train the next day after the blast and re-open the hotel destroyed by the terrorists within one month. Lots of things need to be done (like those suggested by Poonam). Some are thankfully being done now. But it would never be perfect. The government needs to take some overt/covert action to teach the perpetrators a lesson. As Indian citizens, we should demand changes and vote with our feet, AND not indulge in collective pessimism. We shouldn't see returning to "normalcy" as a bad thing. That is what our enemies don't want- they want us to be frothing at our mouth with anger and self-defeatism. The most fitting reply would be to bounce back with a venegance.
