You should stand up for your rights. Don't let work take over your life.
Important point to remember is that in a private company, in majority of the cases, your boss will treat you as a "resource", he is just a slave driver who wants to extract the maximum out of you for minimum payment. Don't take him seriously all the time. And another thing is the deadlines are always soft .. thay almost always underestimate. I usually work on a problem until I am satisfied with the solution .. that is important ... don't do chalta firta kaam .. even though your boss is pressurizing you about time.
Jyaada phantom banne ki jaroorat nahi hai. I personally dislike those sprighty people .. who seem to be very active at all times.

I am surprised to see the poll results so far, but to me the best techq. is to SAVE your arsh and be diplomatic, lick your boss Arash and screw your colleagues so that they never come to know about it....:)
of course do best what you can matching your capabilities, coz if you are not smart then you are screwed anyway :p
and I am really serious no kidding this time

Thats why I agreed on your views..;):)

Really nice views...
Agreed , thats certainly a way of approaching things !

Do your best and do not think about it , because you cannot do any better! :)

However let me just do a small critical analysis of the options provided:

Politics:

Well there are people who have become MDs and others say just because of nice politics , so I wont deny its importance ! But then this is for moving on in company rather than stability , its an extra condition not necessary one!

Job Related Technical knowledge:

Well if you do not have them , sooner or later you will be caught and made redundant , so this is necessary ! Sure it is not sufficient!

Buttering of boss:

I do not have experience of how things works in India but here sitting in a top professional environment , certainly do not think buttering is needed , do your work and you can even argue with your bosses if you are strong enough and can support your arguements. Might be this will not work when in front of the CEO or someone very higher but cer tainly you can talk easily to your manager. I am privileged to have good managers ( I havea lot of them , 4-5 to be precise :p ) I have seen people who only believe in just pleasing their bosses , well that's an objective function which is good but then no "good" boss will be happy unless you do some good work for him/her! I prefer to make him happy workwise and not the other way!

Dedication to your company

Dedication to work is an better option i guess. There is a saying that love your work and not company becasue company might make you redundant some day ! So it goes this way ! I find satisfaction in doing my work to perfection at times ( Maslow's top levels ;) )

Honest working

Thats kind of included in the dedication to work , so I skip this one!

Dear sir, in above points dedication to company is there, not dedication to work...

Personally I have always worked only if something interests me and/or challeneges me to the core ( else I am the most lazy one around ), that has been a very successful mantra so far in life , I understand some people have to work with other constraints as well ! So i would say for them that it is all in the objective function , make sure you define your objective function well and then critically analyse how you can optimise your objective function with the constraint you have!
:)
Its an Optimisation problem mostly !:) ( I can hear some of you saying that it is typical of a Mathematician ;) ) !

Satyender Ji,

I agree with other members who said that you need a blend of multiple skills, not necessarily the ones in the poll.
What skills are required would depend on where are you in the organization hierarchy.

1)Politics: Communication and Networking Skills in order to play it (politics) as well as stay out of it. (Or are we talking about "tuchi" politics?)
2)Job Related Technical knowledge: Will always give the person edge over others, at every level
3)Buttering of Boss: Does not work without option 2). In a private job a boss is just as answerable to his boss for the performance as any other person.
4)Dedication to your company: This is proven over time or the candidate has proved extremely profitable in short time, either way, some stability would be expected for the person.
5)Honest working: Appreciated but needs to be productive as well.

It would have been nice if there was another option: Result oriented.

Regards,

Dear members of JL.

From last 2 years, I am searching for the best skills for smooth running of private jobs

I hope your views and suggestions will be really valuable and highly appreciable on this topic.

Regards

Yes, the "TUCHI" polotics that people often say AURTON wali poilitics but men found indulged more than women:p

P.S. Sattu i still don't understand why the technical skills option is given? Doesn't one get the JOB if he already had the technical skills:confused:

Sunita ji,

I have given technical skills as option because every body in Private sector have different levels of technical knowledge...
At the time of selection Interviewer can not judge your technical skills completely...Or you can explain it as "Technical skills of a person in any field, can not be judge fairly in a interview of 1 or 2 hours":D

Hi Sunita,
"Tuchi" sounds feminine..:)...
In my experience, tuchi politics is petty politics that can not provide stability in the long run in the private sector. Tuchi politics is tolerated only till the time it does not impact work environment, and till no one complains about it. People indulging in it have been reprimanded in my company.

politics & buttering alongwith technical skills

I think Technical skils are neccessary otherwise u cant survive for long time.
But politics & buttering are integral part of your key to success in an organization..

My share of suggestions!

Dear friends,

1. Politics: To be more practical, we can be articulative.
2. Technical knowledge: Must. I never expect a cobbler to do my hair. Technical knowledge puts you on a unique platform. It fills you with sense of acheivement. It sets you apart from the masses and puts you among equals.
3. Buttering: Butter is meant for eating. Should not be wasted. Commonly resorted by people who don't have faith in their capabilities. We should be candid admirers. Genuine compliments are always appreciated.
4. Dedication: Is required. Rather one should be more dedicated to one's career. It would automatically lead you to work dedication and other relevant dedications.
5. Honest working: I would suggest "Integrity" in place of "Honesty".

Moreover, a healthy balance between work and personal life would make you more innovative, energetic and productive in addition to meeting your social and personal responsibilities.

Sunita,
Well, we all speak from our experiences..:)
So, petty people take petty petty steps to reach the top....how long does it take them to reach at that level within a company?

An executive became Group Head Admin in 4-5 yrs, whereas another hardworking/sincere executive got to be manager in around 12 yrs with 1/3 of the salary as compared to that GH:o I feel sorry for the guy and spoke to MD:)

Sunita ji , the compensation / status etc are a part of the broader objective function one sets for himself !

Today while having a talk with my colleague over lunch we were discussing the work of a senior! He is responsible for all the night cycle operations and if anything goes wrong , he is called up and then he has to "fix" it! The colleague was saying that he would not take up such a job come wat may!
I work with the guy who is responsible for night cyle processes and have seen him doing work at 1 am PST ( which is like 10 am CET (my time zone )). And him talking like "i m going to sleep for an hour and then come back "! I mean how can one sleep for an hour ?

But he happily does his job ( becasue he has been doing it for years!)!

So things really depend on the objective function , if someone does not want to go "petty" and ple ase t he boss , they should derive satisfaction even with lower pay/ranks! :)

We are not living in an rational world and sooner we recognise this , the better ! :)

This is what u can term as "Smart Work and management skills" dear...
