On naming Jat Villages.

I have noticed that even though a village is inhabited predominantly by one gotra, the name of the village rarely matches with the gotra name. For example Village Kiloi ( near Rohtak) is predominantly inhabited by Hooda clan but the village name is not based on the name 'Hooda'. One would expect that the village founder would name the village on his name. Perhaps there is a meaning behing following this practice. Can anyone shed some light?

i am not agree with your veiw. In rajasthan there are many village with gotra name like village Kakrala in Duud (Jaipur) was esteblished by Kakrilia gotra Jats. But unfortunately at this time there are no Kakralia Gotra Jat in this village.
other examlpes
Mandawara in Thehsil phagi (Jaipur) --- Mandawara Gotra Jats
Mundwara in Kishangarh (Ajmer) ----- Mundwaria Gotra Jats
and many other village situated in rajasthan by Gotra names

In Mahrashtra most of the people use their sirname as the name of there villages or city like mubaikar punekar talekar khandekar etc etc similarly if we will go south of that we will find the use of fathers name compulsory in their name but as we approach the north we don't have a certain pattern on the name of individuals or villages except few exceptions .but at the same time it may be difficult also like we have many villages of single gotra so how does it feel like "shokeen-16 pur" or Rathee 120 va orsomething like that

It would be interesting if some kind of historical fact lies behind particular villages name if the village name is not matching with the gotra name. It maybe possible that the founder randomly chose to give a particular name especially if a village with the gotra name already exists.
Do names like Katwal, Kiloi etc that are not part of the commonly used vocabulary have a meaning behind them? I would think so.

Whosoever was first the inhabitant of any village must had put the name of village according to various popular beliefs he had about that area. It is not neccessary that present dominant population was there at that time. Like there are many villages which are named as Majra, Dhani, Kheri which do not represent any gotra or name but a certain meaning which implies that these villages were branched from genuine source. Not naming all villages on clan shows that they were wise enough to maintain hetrogenious identity of village rather than homogenious nature of clan. Yes, taxonomy of villages is an interesting area to be explored. Eldest people of any area would be of help in this regard as Jats hardly have any thing documented about nomenclature.

A Jat village may have name after

1. Gotra who founded it

2.First person who founded it

3.A particular tree found there in abundance

4. A prominent river

5. A prominent structure like Bawdi etc

6.A local god or goddess
