Tamil Nadu-born Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, a senior scientist at the MRC Laborartory of Molecular Biology at Cambridge, has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2009 along with two others, the Nobel Committee announced on Wednesday.
Born in 1952 in Chidambaram, Ramakrishnan shares the Nobel prize with Thomas E Steitz (US) and Ada E Yonath (Israel) for their "studies of the structure and function of the ribosome".
Ramakrishnan earned his B.Sc. in Physics (1971) from Baroda University and his Ph.D. in Physics (1976) from Ohio University.
He moved into biology at the University of California, San Diego, where he took a year of classes, then conducted research with Dr Mauricio Montal, a membrane biochemist.
"This year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry awards Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Thomas A Steitz and Ada E Yonath for having showed what the ribosome looks like and how it functions at the atomic level," the Nobel committee said in its citation.
All three have used a method called X-ray crystallography to map the position for each and every one of the hundreds of thousands of atoms that make up the ribosome, it said.
"This year's three Laureates have all generated 3D models that show how different antibiotics bind to the ribosome. These models are now used by scientists to develop new antibiotics, directly assisting the saving of lives and decreasing humanity's suffering," the citation said.
Better known as Venky among friends, Ramakrishnan started out as a theoretical physicist. After graduate school, he designed his own 2-year transition from physics to biology.

As a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University, he worked on a neutron-scattering map of the small ribosomal subunit of E Coli. He has been studying ribosome structure ever since.

Ramakrishnan has authored several important papers in academic journals.
In the August 26, 2000 issue of Nature, Ramakrishnan and his coworkers published the structure of the small ribosomal subunit of Thermus thermophilus, a heat-stable bacterium related to one found in the Yellowstone hot springs.
With this 5.5 Angstrom-resolution structure, Ramakrishnan's group identified key portions of the RNA and, using previously determined structures, positioned seven of the subunit's proteins.
In the September 21, 2000 issue of Nature, Ramakrishnan published two papers. In the first of these, he presents the 3 Angstrom structure of the 30S ribosomal subunit.
His second paper reveals the structures of the 30S subunit in complex with three antibiotics that target different regions of the subunit. In this paper, Ramakrishnan discusses the structural basis for the action of each of these drugs.
After his postdoctoral fellowship, Ramakrishnan joined the staff of Brookhaven National Laboratory in the US. There, he began his collaboration with Stephen White to clone the genes for several ribosomal proteins and determine their three-dimensional structures.
He was also awarded a Guggenheim fellowship during his tenure there, and he used it to make the transition to X-ray crystallography.
Ramakrishnan moved to the University of Utah in 1995 to become a professor in the Department of Biochemistry. There, he initiated his studies on protein-RNA complexes and the entire 30S subunit.
He since moved to the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, where he is a Senior Scientist and Group Leader in the Structural Studies Division. He joins the list of several Nobel laureates who worked at the laboratory.

Well done. Many hearty congratulations. Wish some someone gets the science noble prize based upon his work in India.

When Indian students will stop Nakal Maarni, Pharrey Chalaney, that will happen.:D

Sorry I don't agree, when Indians start respect themselves, their mother tongue - stop cursing their own motherland then this will be normal.

Once a Japani told a layman Indian is much more intelligent than average Japani.

Do agree sir, surviving in a land of multiple languages, cultures, climates and religions itself needs high degree of intelligence.

We are a young nation and have spent only 60 years after getting independence, we are definitely recognized in world as an upcoming world power along with China. That itself speaks of our capabilities.

Aur kamiyan kis mulk mein nahin hoti....US & UK might be having higher crime rates than India. And we've all seen what highly developed Australia is doing to Indian students.......

No Sir this will happen when we have the required infrastructure for research, hi-tech instruments for our labs, full funding from government, nice packages for scientists and appreciation of their work !!

I have done research in one of India's top-most universities and i've seen our scientist going door to door for funding of research projects. Even there we have to halt our experiments for want of electricity at least once in two months (this was the top university JNU, imagine the plight of others). Can you imagine the wastage that happens during that time and sometimes we have to start all over again !!
Most other universities and their labs are in pathetic condition.

One can earn lakhs in a month by being an engineer or an MBA (after 4-5 years studying) whereas PhD alone takes up that much years and even then no one can get a decent package as compared to an engineer.

As you all might be aware how some of our students get their PhD and they are eligible for teaching apropos UGC's new rule that states NET is not essential (future of so many students at stake)!! Imagine the plight of those who burnt the midnight oil to pass the test, it test their all-round knowledge in the subject concerned whereas PhD is a specialization in a minor topic. How can we then expect our students to take up research with such teachers around, with such packages, with lack of resources and God knows what else ??

\thank GOD atleast an Indian is gettin it this time,...!!!,..good ,..great..:)
lets hope for best in near future that a project/research/experiment conducted here in our mother land grabs a noble,....!!! :):)

fully agreed with you sir,.. abhi tak hume ek dusre ki taang kheechne se fursat nai milti.,..... BUt still we are changing and we are one of the progressing nations ,..!!!

You are just making my point here. Did Dr CV Raman had it better than today. Now here is a conundrum, BARC, DRDO have all the funding, all the research facilities, and they say top class scientists. Name one product from them that can be called success. BARC research of all these years and chest thumping of "second to none" has turned into dud nuke deterrence. We can go round and round but there is no end to it. To answer your other question why do Software Engineers and MBA grads make so much more money--simple reason they bring in tangible results in shortest amount of time, they add to the bottom line of companies who are responsible to their investors and stake holders. Same goes for medicine researchers with drug companies.
If someone has done research in India that brings tangible results, IPR royalties, or worthy of getting Nobel Prize--do enlighten me.
Bottom line--Money makes the world go round and round. Scientist and Researchers who burn the mid night oil in discovering something that will bring tangible results for betterment of economy, humanity will always find money and those who follow the same path of redoing stale research they will always be struggling for pennies.
Just my thoughts............

At the same time some govt depts have so much resource getting waste, What resources these DOE etc have, they do not make any use of them. Haryana MLA's were given free laptops, what happened to them, must be used to play pokeman game by some kids now.

Sorry I don't agree, when Indians start respect themselves, their mother tongue - stop cursing their own motherland then this will be normal.
Dude Please, owning and being aware of one's flaw is not cursing your motherland. It is an opportunity to fix the problems and moving on to build a stronger nation. Again Trolls seldom know the differerence

Once a Japani told a layman Indian is much more intelligent than average Japani.
Again, Dude
Please put your objective glasses on. Intelligence is a very subjective term, Intelligence is when preparation meets the opportunity, Don't try to take a random statement of a person and proseltyze as Gospel Truth.

If I have to go by your definiton-----Jews control the Diamond Industry and have almost virtual control of Hollywood does that mean they are more intelligent than British who actually ruled the world and played key role in the formation of Israel. Furthermore, does your definition mean that Chinese are smarter than Japanese and Koreans, It is true chinese can produce products cheaper than anyone else on the face of this planet but yet almost everything they produce is nothing but crap aka total waste of money contaminated with lead, sulphur, mercury and who knows what else.

Captain saab ye teeno desh SWARG hai dharti ke. Whan par kabhi 50 saal me hi koi ek jurm hota hai.
People of these countries are next only to God.

Koi agar kisi Indian ko peet bhi de to kya baat hai? thik hi to hai. Shayad unka Indians ko PYAAR aur IJJAT dene ka tareeka yahi hota hoga :)
Ye baat shayad hume nahi pta. Jo whan rahte hai wo jyada achi trah bta payenge :)

Apne desh me to bahut sari kamiyan hai ji. Pta sabko hai, par koi aage nahi aayega unko dur karne ke liye. Bus yaha baitho aur likh do ki ye galat hai wo galat hai.
Main to confuse ho gya ke Fir ye politicians kya karenge agar hum ye sab karenge to??

ohh i m elated beyond words to know that an Indian was accoladed like this along with three others how much merit this scientist has nd how commendable his accomplishments are !!!.
Indians have got unmatched brilliance that's indubitable .....if we conduct a survey we will find that a lot of talent resides in Indian villages too but the lack of good govt policies, devoted and conscientious teachers ,religious or societal restrictions , perfect guidance , lack of exposure to new explorations and inventions and dearth of avenues has made the youth quite indolent and a seeker for options or excuses .Even in metros no matter how much developed they may be they lack good science libraries with no sufficient literature related to latest researches..Gosh so disgusting it is !

what i also think is that there is a big disorder with which almost every Indian suffers nd that is" blind imitation "..we spend most of our time, talent and energy in imitating either the neighbor or someone opulent or the culture esp the western culture nd i really find it ridiculous when some Indians really take it as a matter of pride to talk in the foreign accent eg. "doorrrr "for simple 'door' or something along the lines.. Ha!. In today's times when a boy or a girl passes 12 grade they jus in a mad rush of making huge bucks either go for medicine or engg or may be bcom with MBA all so mindlessly..it's like limiting to some precinct and not thinking beyond that. This very stereotypic mind set that either medicine or engg or MBA, has been quite instrumental in crushing down the creativity nd refraining the students from pursuing golden researches ... it's too much like this that "" arey SUNO SUNO SUNO uskey betey ka medical mein ho gaya first attempt mein bada hee intelligent hai!"" it means if someone is not able to make it he is sheer duffer or idiot ??

The Research scholars pursuing researches in many central universities have to go through a lot ,most of the guides have a very slimy menatlity they jus don't want to take the pain , don't give time, don't work with cohesiveness and feel intimidated if the student is more intelligent than them thereby ending up harassing or demoralising the scholars ..all this doesn't happen with that intensity in foreign univs there they inculcate originality and acceptance. Y aren't we copying pasting this wonderful facet of western culture ????

There is so much to say but it's about time that we become tenacious of our culture and believe in genuinity of ideas rather than jus following what's not ours .Only inasmuch as Education imparted at both school nd college levels is research oriented nd hones the creativity rather than the one that makes students more conscious of marks and skilled in regurgitating teacher's lectures on the day of exam as being the last resort to avoid failing or to get 90%or even 100%(in todays times):D many can become like V .Ramakrishnan.

still its a long way to go!!!Lets not let education go inassimilable!!:)
nd plsss i m not criticising my country here i m jus trying to unearth some lacunae and wanting modifications.

I totally agree with Richa. So many of our engineering graduates do a project in their final semester- so many of them do come with original ideas but because of the sorry state of our institutions they go un-noticed !! Nothing is done to promote them. Not only the engineering graduates, even the school drop-outs are known to come out with great innovations!! I read somewhere the TATA’s went to France in concern with an automobile engine (developed by a family) that ran on hydrogen but the same thing was indeed made by a lad (an ordinary boy at his home) in some north-east state of India.
This should be an eye-opener, what they could have easily got at home they went overseas searching for it because no one knew about the boy’s innovation !! Who is to be blamed, the government of course. There is no dearth of talent in India.

Sir.
how could u blame the whole educational system for not getting a nobel every year or so. I donn think every citizen of a developed country or in the country u live in, receives Nobel each year. There are 318 nobel laureates USA citizens have received and you please scrutinize how many have done their schooling from US itself. I am not saying its enough for indians having 10 nobel till the date. But your remark in inept for blaming the educational system. i think whole Asia's educational system have glitch
because japan has max as far(16). everybody knos the bugs in Sweden nobel committee after this year peace prize to scum(at least scum for peace) Obama.
Indian Nobel laureates

1. Rabinder Nath Tagore

2. Sir C V Raman in 1939 in physics

3. Har gobind singh Khorana in 1968 in medicine

4. S. Chandershekhar in 1983 in physics.

5 . Amratya Sen in 1998 in economics

6. VS naipaul in 2001 in litrature .

7. Venkatraman ramkrishanan this year.

Rabinder Nath tagore an indian being educated in India

C.V. Raman got his M.Sc. from presidency collge, chennai India .

Har gobind khorana did his M.Sc. from P.U. in 1945

Cnadershekhar did his b.Sc. from Presidency collge in Chennai.

Amrtya Sen did his schooling from Kolkata.

couldnt get much information bout naipaual

Vankat Ramkrishanan : its already written in 1st post

Most of them did their atleast B.Sc/B.A from India and nobody ‘throuout the world:confused:’ doubt their innovations or ideas of being genuine and they were“not copycats”

"news.rediff.com/report/2009/oct/08/how-india-missed-another-nobel-prize DOT htm"

please go through the link and could see how many of inidan have missed the nobel in physics itself and nobel is being awarded to scientists who are just advancing their work .
