Moderation
Would recommend/ appreciate if specific posts can be highlighted along with the warning to convey msg to the right person.
Dear Kalkal ji and others
It will be tragic if we come to that stage.
We should not want to highlight people, but simply persuade them to amend their actions.
Being like the other moderators, I too am a very reluctant moderator.
On occasion, I will take action, delete posts, threads. That is done most reluctantly.
Generally I try and communicate with the poster, and invite them to communicate with me, by e mail or phone.
It creates a sense in one of having failed somehow, if one has to reach the point of having to moderate, delete posts, or ban someone.
This opportunity may be appropriate for sharing some of my thoughts.
First, no one wants to be a moderator, and it with extreme reluctance and trepidation that I accepted. How does one moderate 15,000 persons.?
What did strike me was the overall excellent quality of the members ,and the dedication and selfness of the moderation team, who were doing this thankless, yet necessary task, and it became a bit of a duty to come forward and help.
With 15,000 members we have so little problems! This speaks volumes, to the credit of the character of the individuals who make up our community.
The idea of a discussion group , is self moderation.
That means taking members taking responsibility for their actions.
The discussion group is not a forum, for ' getting it off one's chest', or using sarcasm or insults or other forms of abuse, to make one's point.
Posters, who are tempted to this, should keep in mind, that their posts are a permanent record, which will stay there long after they have died and have gone to swarg.
They might wish to keep in mind, is this how they wish to be remembered, when some one searches for their name , say 20 years or 100 years later.
Their children might want to see how Daddy wrote, when daddy was a young man! Some employer may just do an internet search to see what their employees are up to.
Such posts become and are taken as indicative of a person’s maturity, and we all know that employers do not like to hire immature persons. Such persons have been dismissed from their jobs for writing inappropriate matter on the net or, at the very least they do not get considered for promotion. They do not even find out why ? They are not anonymous any more.
Be careful of what you post, it may come back to haunt you.
Self preservation may be a good reason for not writing such posts.
There are other reasons for not writing such posts, and for people to pause and reflect before they hit that ‘Send ‘ button , to launch that destructive internet missile ‘Khagzi Ghora’, which is intended to annihlate their opponents at one stroke.
Purpose of this site
One is the increasing participation of our ladies , old and young,on this site.
This is very welcome.
Ladies will not particpate in a rough environment. A good reason to keep an atmosphere of decorum.
Another , in my humble view ,relates to the purpose of this site, this group.
Why does it exist? Why are we members? What do we hope to achieve?
The group as of today, October 8, 2009 has 14,711 members, of which over 2,000 are active members.
That is quite a statistic. That is quite a force. Fifteen thousand dedicated people. Think of what we can achieve for our community with such a force.
The standard of posts is excellent, and reflects well upon the members and the community.
One or two persons, on occasion, get a little boisterous, and say things that they will later regret. They will come around.
The site is also becoming known out there, especially for those who wish to take a pulse of what the Jat community is thinking.
A recent example was the article in the Daily Jagran quoting some of our posters.
This thread is a political thread. It will influence people.
We have here a tool, an excellent tool. The internet is a tool and medium par excellence.
We are a 15,000 strong community and growing. If each members contributes Rs 1,000, we will have Rs 1.5 crores in the fund. If we contribute $ 100, we will have $ 1.5 million or over Rs. 6 crores in the fund.
Think of what we can achieve for our community with such a force. The number of children we can pull out of the poverty trap.
I would rather members think of sharing such a dream, and pursue such goals, than take up the time of other members, in getting themselves moderated.
Some food for thought :
What do members wish to do?
What would members like?
Would they like this site to influential in politics, and in aiding their community, or would they like themselves, the site and the community, to be the laughing stock of others???
If you are going to post on this thread, think of yourselves as a member of this influential "Jat community think tank".
This is a public forum. A formal forum. Maintain a high standard.
Very best regards to everyone.
