V Ramakrishnan wins 2009 Chemistry Nobel

If you're a car salesman, and someone says "This is a terrible car, I'm not buying it," it doesn't mean they hate you. They just don't like your product. I think that's a mistake a lot of people in show business make.. they're so tied to their act they take everything personally.

mail by all sort of people
anybdy could get his mail id from his home page and can do that

he is bothered bout the people(particular group of people including desi or desi turned videsi(these could be more in number) coz indian name is indian verywhere ) who are just clogging or trashing his inbox. Being kind of introvert or being isolate nature person anybdy could say that, not a special case.
one more reason is because he is an editor of PNAS "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" very good international journal and there he must bee getting mails of journal papers and to edit them is must within prescribed time fixed by editorial bord.
As he has written; mails by "strange people" may be TOI or other news paper reporters just to make an inetrview with him; just idle students, people . He is bothered bout people saying themselve his teacher.
He didn't say anything bout the people of india; they shuld be proud or nt, he should be considered as indian or nt.
some people just start making the TOI news credible as a sudden these days, its live example of being adolescent

and kai videsi(which were desi) are just like
kauva chala hans ki chal apani chal bhi bhula.

in a tv reality show (just after winning the meadl)Boxer Vijender singh(indian boxer) said "he is thaknful to people who supported or give blessing to him, before winning the medal(point was mentioned)" and then he added "bad m to sab badhai dete hain, koi bhi support ker sakta hai".
and i m damn proud on that boxer Vijender singh and scientist Ramkrishanan.
.I just wrote this to point out not comparing two.

So this statement could be quite usual depending upon nature

In between reading different opinions of friends, I forgot to congrats Dr. Ramkrishanan.
Heartiest congratulation to Dr. Ramakrishnan for his great achievement........

God !! some people just don't know when to stop !!
I'm out ... keep molesting him digitally till he agrees with your completely weird point of view.

Thanks chhikara......Hopefully you will keep your words:):)

For those wondering about Indian education standards said:
www dot topuniversities dot com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2009/results

Top university 200 or 300.

There are several organization which provide ranking:
1.The Academic Ranking of World Universities: is compiled by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which was a large-scale Chinese project to provide independent rankings of universities around the world primarily to measure the gap between Chinese and "world class" universities. The ranking first time was published on 31st dec 2003 was published by EU.
2.Global University Ranking : is ranking of over 400 "world-known" universities by the RatER, a Russian-based non-commercial independent rating agency supported by the academic society of Russia.
3.A ranking of university and college web presence, the G-Factor methodology counts the number of links only from other university websites relying solely on Google's search engine
4.The QS world university ranking : Times Higher Education, a British publication that reports specifically on issues related to higher education, in association with Quacquarelli Symonds, annually publishes the THES - QS World University Rankings, a list of 500 ranked universities from around the world.
Other agencies or organizations are like newsweek , webometrics etc.
Lets look for the methodology being followed by the survey organization the link provided above ” The QS world university ranking”:
The overall ranking are compiled based upon six distinct indicators:
1.Academic Peer review having weightage of 40% alone.
2.Employer review with 10% weightage.
3.Faculity student ratio with 20% wtg.
4.Citation per faculty 20 %wtg
5 & 6th is international student and faculty with 5% wtg each .

Academic peer review survey is based upon the results from 5 subject area:
Arts & Humanities
Engineering & IT
Life Sciences & Biomedicine
Natural Sciences
Social Sciences

Then 2nd is employer review by alumni’s and working staff & student .and 3rd point is clear just by name.

Citation meaning : paper being published by research groups in the institute being referred by other journal paper other than the same group; the stream IIT is not specialized in , meaning in research.
Being highly populated country and low budget in education, here in india, faculty student ratio could be optimal bt not best.

Now it is more easy to compare the ranking because without putting the methodology, ranking is futile.
The university which make in top 200 are: three or two IIT’s. But have a look at the situation:
Institutes like IIT’s don’t offer subjects areas like Art & humanities, Social Science, life science & biomedicine ( not sure bout this) bt the ranking is based upon all indicators. main stream in IIT's is eng and tech, also not emphasizing more on research in natural science. Moving to uni. like DU where eng &tech science stream is not upto the mark being lake of resources fund which are necessary to amend the situation in science and tech.

IITB, IITD, IITK and the ranking of these in Eng & Tech is 30,35,60 which is not worst(even I think its good) meanwhile their total ranking is more than 140 or so. All the IIT’s are serving there purpose well and good , these were made for.
The position of DU is 64 in social science bt far behind in other stream.

some institutes/organization, which are good(not best) bt couldn’t make in list( coz for being in competition out of 5 there should be min two streams at UG level) ; like IISc, TIFR(mainly research in physics, astro phy and material science) , NCBS(mainly biology and medicine), JNCASR(physics), JNU(some language UG courses offered) and all IIM’s .

Now government has started paying attention on education standard, situation could be better in near future.

Addendum : I am not trying to say education standard is best in india bt point is its not worse. Its improving.

Finished writing a long post and all lost..when clicked submit. Whats this glitch here on JL...
Sad its lost..had poured my heart out..Will try to recall what all I did pencil in ..in there..:(

My 2 cents..

C’mon guys…enough tearing apart.

This is true that we do feel a sense of pride when we see an Indian name in the list winners (Nobel or anything else for that matter). But this is also true that I have seen so many Indians (born here or back home).. except their name or looks(not all.;))..not a single thing about them is Indian.

Having said that, people going ga-ga to the extent as mentioned by the Nobel laureate himself (faking as his teacher or zabardasti ki badhai etc..clogging his mail box) is surely irritating. ‘Bhed chaal’ is the word, which we desis are really good at.. blind aping. Lets admit it!

Conditions in India, as far as research is concerned are not the best but certainly, is improving. I know people who are doing good work there. Then there are those who are thinking outside the box, both in terms of research and the career route paradigm which generally is India ---> US etc (back to--->India .. is needed). Certainly there is a change in the air..!

What I wish to see is some Indian earning this honor based on his/her work in India, which certainly is gonna happen, may be in next couple of decades. I do see it coming. AMEN!

Nobody is tearing anyone apart, just a different perspective and that makes everything interesting. I agree with Sid Chhikkara, only thing Indian about Ramakrishnan is his lineage nothing else. It reminds of me movie called, The Rock with Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage where Sean Connery says something about doing the best. I am paraphrasing here, people who live in past always whine about their best, people who are winners are never tired of effort, hence enjoy the fruits of their labor.

comparing marathon winner and nobel prize (work for humanity) winner in arrant useless :(.
no comment

Bhai both are huge achievements albeit in a different field.
I would love to see the posts here if a person of Indian origin wins an Olympic gold for his adopted country, then it would be the same.

Let's just say you feel proud about this Nobel prize winner, I don't. To each their own.

And I agree with what you said!

Well, the subject being discussed here is not a simple one. It raises numerous other questions which are related.

To be precise and dot on the topic, I do agree..that there is nothing Indian about Prof. Ramakrishnan except his Indian descent and not to offend anyone, I do feel that this whole badhai shadhai ka drama (if based on him being an Indian) is a lil' silly!

Thanks for clearing my doubts kadian ji....
Please don't take it personally...
I want to ask one question:
You are living in qatar(have citizenship or not, condition will remain same for us ).......
If you achieve something there......we(Indian) should feel proud or not?????

Again i am repeating my intention is not to hurt you.......Don't take personally ...This question i am asking because of curiosity....I am confused after reading whole thread .......please answer with cool head

Miffed at emails from India

Nobel laureate Venkatraman Ramakrishnan has expressed disenchantment with people from India “bothering” him “clogging” up his email box and dubbed as “strange” their sudden urge to reach out to him. “All sorts of people from India have been writing to me, clogging up my email box. It takes me an hour or two to just remove their mails,” he said.

Leave him alone

Bhai I am not a citizen here, Actually as per the local laws no foreign national can ever become citizen of Qatar.

I am an Indian citizen and haven't left the country permanently. I am here for 2 years for a project after which I will most probably be returning home as I have no interest in staying here any longer. Should anyone feel proud of anything I achieve (Which is highly unlikely), It's their wish, I would surely not be feeling sad if no one does.

Hope I answered your question.

Bhai maan li teri baat, khoob appreciate kar kisi bhi Indian ki achievement, like what we did for Kalpana Chawla and others, but the point is that this person doesn't want you (all Indians) to celebrate his success. apni desi boli me venkat nu kahve se "tu kunn?? main khaamkhaa".
I wonder if Italians ever celebrate Sonia's success story.

Vivek Bhai

He deserved to be left alone! His comment is pathetic!
Did people expected anything from him in return while congratulating him?
You must have heard about Dr. Elizabeth H blackburn, who is the joint winner of Noble prize in Medicine, is an Australian born US citizen. She left Australia almost same time as this Venkatraman guy did for her Phd. at camridge and moved to Yale, US in 1975. Whole of Australian media celebrated her success as firsn Australian women, winner of the Noble prize. All the Australian TV channels and News papers covered her success story as an Australian

Cheers!

Scientists are normally introvert. They do not discuss much with others. Also, they dont have habit of having so much of name and fame.

Hence, I think it is quite okay on his part to tell people not to flood his mailbox. Simple !!!!

He has lots of personal work and probably official mails to check. Sending thousands of congratulations mails is kind of spamming !!

When will we indians grow up ?

"To feel proud" and "to spam someone's mailbox" are two different things and one needs to understand the difference.

Congratulating someone whom you dont know at all is like someone from us going to 7 racecourse road and telling Dr Manmohan - "Mein aapki Maami ki behan ki beti ke sasur ke saale jo Patel Nager mein rehte hain unki behan ka daamaad hoon, Rohtak se"

Tu kunn, Mein Khaam-khaa.... :rock :rock :rock :rock
