Master of All Jack of None

The most appropriate option is missing here most of the JLders comes in this category.

Master of All Jack of None.

but i thot the saying goes... "jack of all trades, master of none"
...
anyways if my assumption is correct, i feel tht
a jack of all trades may also be a master of integration, as the individual knows enough from many learned trades nd skills to be able to bring their disciplines together in a practical manner, BUT is not a specialist. such a person is known as a polymath or a renaissance man... a typical example being leonardo da vinci.
...
following author's version of the saying >>> my vote goes for "jack of all trades"

Master of All Jack of None.

Can you prove your statement? If that was not in the sarcastic sense I would bet my money on the contrapositive of your statement.

Thank you,
Anil

Which one do you think is better- to be jack of all trades or be master of one?

Context please?

If its about professional thingy , I would go with Jack of all but master of one/two may be.

You got to have something unique to kind of survive and be master of everything that comes your way to flourish.

I was discussing randomly with my friends when one of them stated that modern day companies have too much money and they hire the best guys to do even the menial work and i kind of agree! I see PHDs doing petty coding work and for work which a couple of years experienced engineering graduate can easily do , they will hire someone who has a Masters or 15 + eyars experience and still they succeed in producing the most crappier of solutions.
I personally feel my creativity and knowledge has infact gone down while two years on job , but I have gained a lot on communication skills , managing expectations , talking crap , giving lectures on vision ( which does not exist :p :D ) and doing a lot of blah blah.

i guess watever u have learned is because you faced with demands and growing pressure :) and everyone does to survive in job.by the way don't loose ur heart because u hav large platform to show ur creativity . shortage is only perception everything is abandont :)

have even more creativity, even more happiness, even more joy...... tc

Which one do you think is better- to be jack of all trades or be master of one?

if we think broadly and want to be an enlightened person master of one is enough :) after that everything become aligned......its basically for Gyani ppl.... and for others who don't understand this i guess to be jack of all trades is better....

personnally I wish I could be jack of all trades... that satisfies me a lot (as it includes learning new things in entirely diffrent area everytime).
But to survive professionally, USP is much more needed. So master of at least one is a need :)

The context is our professional life.

When I am a jack of all trades, my growth prospects are limited/delayed as I would need to compete with master(s) in each trade.

When I become a master of one/two, soon my HR asks me to train my back-up, somebody to take my place when I move up the next rung. My back up arrives promptly, and training starts immediately....however, I am still waiting for a sucker higher up the foodchain, who's hungry for growth, and who can be conned into believeing that taking a backup is part of his profile and opportunity for growth.

The point is, a rolling stone never gathers moss, but then no one would allow me to grow roots and become stronger either. Do the members agree?

Let me try ( and its also true for all Indians )
1)
Al Barouni, the famous Arabic logician and traveler of the 10th century, who spent about 30 years in India from 997 AD to around 1027 AD. According to him, during his visit, most Indian pundits considered it below their dignity even to hold arguments with him. In fact, on a few occasions when a pundit was willing to listen to him, and found his arguments to be very sound, he invariably asked Barouni: which Indian pundit taught these smart things!

2) Indians done a very good job in IT and recognized by the whole world. Many times I have seen Indians are ready to accept any kind of job whether they know it or not. And not only they accept the job but do it in perfect manner.

3)
Here on JL most of the people are ready to express their opinions in each and every thread whereas topics discussed here on varied subjects.

If that will be in the option i surely would choose that one.

But now i will be glad to become like Sachin in cricket as Master or Vishvanathan in Chess or Tigerwoods in Golf and so on. Being a master is always great in addition u can have some other skills not as a master but with little knowledge but on any day i would like to be master of 1 trade rather than jack of all.

As per me if you are a jack of all trades, you are a master of none.

“The master of a single trade can support a family. The master of seven trades cannot support himself. The wind is never for the sailor who knows not to what port he is bound.”

I always like this quote and prefer to be the Master of One.

Being jack of all trades and being master of one are the characteristics depending upon the level of perfection one sets for one self and in terms of today's increasing globalization it's must to keep oneself abreast with things going on in every area but yes one can streamline oneself to one area of specialization where one can really become an erudite.

Once we know little about everything and too much abt something we are a scholar and that is exactly something more conspicious that marks our identity and makes us recognizable by people on a large scale!!!

the jack of all trades maximizes an individual’s peak experiences in life nd he learns to enjoy the pursuit of excellence unrelated to material gain, all while finding the few things he is truly uniquely suited to dominate. it’s more fun, in the most serious existential sense.

on the contrary…

any path that narrows future possibilities may become a lethal trap. humans are not threading their way through a maze… they scan a vast horizon filled with unique opportunities. the narrowing viewpoint of the maze should appeal only to creatures with their noses buried in the sand <<< this goes for those who want to be master of one… guess cannot explain myself more in bare minimal words. i would like all those self-proclaimed “masters” to list at least one trade/discipline where they really consider themselves to be masters.

in a world of dogmatic specialists, it’s the >>> generalist <<< who ends up running the show… this is a FACT, not an assumption.
