Bhullar Jat clan

H.A. Rose writes that Bhular (भूलर), Her, and Man tribes call themselves asl or "original" Jats, and are said to have sprung from the jaṭ or "matted-hair" of Mahadeo, whose title is Bhola ('simple') Mahadeo. They say that the Malwa was their original home, and are commonly reckoned as two and a half tribes, the Her only counting as a half. But the bards of the Man, among which tribe several families have risen to political importance, say that the whole of the Man and Bhular and half the Her tribe of Rajputs were the earliest Kshatriya immigrants from Rajasthan to the Punjab. The head-quarters of the Bhular appear to be Lahore and Ferozepur, and the confines of the Manjha and Malwa; but they are returned in small numbers from every division in the Punjab except Delhi and Rawalpindi, from almost every District, and from every Native State of the Eastern Plains except Dujana, Loharu, and Pataudi. The tribe is probably not a wholly homogeneous one. In Jind its Sidh is Kalanjar, whose samddh is at Mari, and to it milk is offered on the 14th badi of each month ; also cloth at a wedding or the birth of a son. In Sialkot its Sidh is Bhora, whose khāngāh is revered at weddings. In Montgomery the Bhular are Hindu and Muhammadan Jats and classed as agricultural. In Amritsar the Chahil say that Chahal was a son of Raja Khang, who once saw some fairies bathing in a tank. He seized their clothes and only restored them on condition that one of them became his bride. One Ichhran was given him, on condition that he never abused her, and she bore him a son, but one day he spoke harshly to her and she disappeared. But to this day no Chahil ever abuses his daughter ! Settled first at Kot Gadana near Delhi, the Chahil migrated to Pakhi Chahilan near Ambala and there founded Rala Joga or Jogarla in the Malwa.

The Chahil affect Jogi Pir, originally Joga, son of Rajpal, who is said to have been killed, after fighting with the Mughals even when he had been decapitated. Jogi Pir is their chhara (? jathera), and a fair is held in his honour on the 4th nauratra in Asauj. In Jind the Chahil claim descent from Bala, a Chauhan Rajput who took a Jat wife, and so lost caste, but he acquired influence by accepting offerings made to Guga, and Chahils, whatsoever their caste, still take these offerings.! In Jind the Chahil worship Khera Bhumia.

They are probably, says Mr. Pagan, Bagris, originally settled in Bikaner.

Would you kindly help us to solve the riddle how it is that for the Jind region clan is described as having been offshoot of Jat-Rajput marital alliance whereas o the origin of the Jat clan Chahil/chahail in other places owes its origin from different sources? Does this indicaate that the Jat clan under discussion belongs to different ancestors and is not a composite clan.

Or, the reason of different versions of origin of the same clan due to non availability of authentic sources of information to the enumerators perhaps owing to prevalence of illiteracy in India at that time. Be what it was, instead of solving the puzzle of the origin of the clan, Rose seems to have further complicated the issue.

Kindly look into the matter and after comparing other sources available and accessible at your end, throw some fresh light on the issue.

This history is derogatory and irony is that Mr. burdak is propagating it. I pity on burdak ji if even after so much years in history he is relentless in saying jats as offshoots of rajputs..(rajputs marrying jat woman). i request to moderator to delete such posts with immediate effect..we don't this crap now and then from you burdak ji..please don't fill this website just for nothing........

HA Rose wrote this book in 1911. He wrote it on the basis of then available evidences. We can not scrap Rose's book by writing on this form. We need solid evidences to counter act it and create history upto present status. Members are required to produce such evidences. Simple blaiming somebody will not help. Kindly read the sentence - According to another story their ancestor was a Tunwar Rajput (?) . I have put a question mark in the post. Leave apart what Rose has written can some body trace complete lineage of this clan and put it here ?

It is good that by posting this topic you have rightly succeeded in raising the hot topic of discussion about the Jat Rajput relations during the earlier period of our history. Rose had done a great service to ethnic history of India by putting together various points of view that were made available to him so he deserves our thanks rather than disdain.

Billli aati dekh kar kabootron dwara ankhen band karane wali kahani doharane kee jaroorat nahin hai. Mehnat karke latest sources of historical research and tools ka prayog karana hoga! This is one of the biggest challenge the scholars are expected to take to refute his data. How many are there to take up the challenge to replace the 'wrong' data by newer one.

You are right that this collection of data is not history. But is very useful link for further research as it serves the purpose of goading the researchers to further take up the indepth study to counter these surmises. Has anybody taken research on this topic even after a lapse of over 100 years, when Rose's book appeared,to replace this 'wrong' history by the right one. Now is the time young Jat scholars to take up such topics for their M.Phil Ph.D.

Burdakji deserves our thanks because he has done a great service to the community by posting this information which has proved like a live wire for discussion. This is the real purpose and method of research.

Sir, then why the scream when gujjars and rajputs call Jats the illegitimate children of theirs!!..as you yourself are putting the same thing on your website..what the message will go in outside world?..HA Rose was not a GOD that you blindly copy-paste his stuff on this website and introduce that as history of some clan. These things have been discussed here before and Burdak ji himself accepted that there was no rajput CASTE before Moubt abu purification, this term came in vogue after that.

what were the evidences available with HA rose?...the stories propagated by bhaats and listened again from the mouth of folk!!..As there are many jat clans who claim their origin from some rajputs clan...that is happening due to these false bhaat stories and our history was left behind. so Jat historians are supposed to fix that or they will also fall prey of those stories and will write the same story on this website from behind the curtain..( now giving reference of HA ROSE).

Now for your second question the tracing of the lineage of any jat clan has no medium except these bhaat's accounts as every jat historian is shouting from his lungs taht jats did not write the history they made it. So first the biggest challenge in front of jat historians to dig up the identity of this Jat race..clan wise it can be done later.

But in any case there should not be anything here that gives a wrong impression about our history to outsiders, it does not matter whether that has been written by HA ROSE or by someone else.Please remember that we are critics of that false history not the propagator. Your posts give the smell that you are pretty convinced when you write a quotation of a Historian

You will find in the census data of that period that same clan recorded in Rajputs in some districts and Jats in some other districts. We can not leave history because there is a word Rajput over there. You will have to search Jat history from Rajput history because they had been rulers mostly and there was tendency to record themselves as Rajputs to uplift social status. You will find that Jat is at the top of 36 Royal Races known as Rajputs. It means Jats did not emerge from Rajput but were a part of Rajput Political Confederacy. You can not explain any clan history untill and unless you accept that Jats, Gujars, Rajputs, Chauhans, Solankis, Parihars, Panwars etc were not single caste but socio-political Confederacies.

Is it so burdak ji?..so chahar/chahil clan is just 2-3 centuries old?.. I don't think so..As far as I understand HA rose did a brief research about all castes/clans of punjab (not any extensive research on any specific Jat clan)..so his collection of data just came from the mouth of folk and moreover, from bhaat's accounts.

yes that is correct..may be all these warrior tribes have same origin..but what's point in saying "that a rajputs married a jat woman and lost his caste!!" it doe snot seem derogatory to you for jats...so if the people are not ready to understand the same origin theory of these warrior castes, those also should not be taught this malefic version.. My dear Friend,

None has compared HA Rose to even god leave aside painting him to be God.

He was simply a British Bureaucrat and compiled the census data as reported to him by the census enumerators. The fault does not lie with him for the facts noted by in the book under reference but with the persons who supplied the information.

Read the full text of my post, please. None of us--I, HA Rose, Burdakji-- have said anything derogatory word against the origin of the Jats, therefore, there is no reason to raise unnecessary bogey of false propagation of History. The history of various branches of the community known as clans needs in depth historical analysis to fill the gaps. This statement itself means that we do not accept or support the contents in the book of Mr. Rose about the origin of various Jat clans as described by him.

It would be good if anybody including your goodself throws some new light on the origin of the Chahal clan to straighten the historical truth 'distorted' by the British Bureaucrat turned historian.

The Jatland Wiki page says on the issue this also:

Bhim Singh Dahiya writes about this clan that a part of Khionites/white Hunas, the Chahlas (Chols of European historians) in the fourth century AD, were settled on the east of Caspian sea. This was the period when Jauvlas/Johls were occupying Zabulistan in Ghazni area. In 438-39 AD the Iranian Emperor Yazdegirel II led an expedition against the Chahls to the north of Gurgan. It was at Gurgan in steppes of Dahistan that Yazdegird I had been killed by the Jats in 420 AD, even in his own military headquarters, as Gurgan really was.[SUP][3][/SUP] The Chahls must have come to India in the fifth century AD.

Here Tunwar has been written as Rajput but this may include Tanwar or Tomar Jat as well.

It also records time of the incidence the reign of Akbar (1542 – 1605)

Sir when he is writing him as Rajput How can he be a Jat ,you are quoting a source and then modifying that as per your whim and wishe.Here Rose says he is a Rajput married a jatani and his decendants were termed Jats so all Chahi, Chima .....Jats are Dogale, illegal sons.......What can be more derogatory than this ?

On the contrary you could have very well explained that since Chinna Jat clan is mentioned on Indian soils more than thousands years before Akbar was even born, by Greeks sources and many Puranic traditions ,so these Rajput stories are just figment of imagination and nothing but bullshit.
