Chronology of Indian History --Newer discussions

Friends,

Full details as found in Vishnu Purana about one of the battles between the Devas and the Asuras is presented below for favour of the readers' comments with a request to identify the chronology and personages involved in the battle alongwith the region and reasons of the contest between the two parties:

1. According to Vishnu Purana, (Book IV, Part-II, p 288):
“In the Treta age a violent war broke out between the gods and the Asuras, in which the former were vanquished. They consequently had recourse to Vishnu for assistance, and propitiated him by their adorations. The eternal ruler of the universe, Narayana, had compassion upon them, and said: “What you desire is known unto me. Hear how your wishes shall be fulfilled. There is an illustrious prince named Puranjaya, the son of a royal sage; into his person I will infuse a portion of myself, and having descended upon earth I will in his person subdue all your enemies. Do you therefore endevour to secure the aid of Puranjaya for the destruction of your foes.”
Acknowledging with reverence the kindness of the deity, the immortals quitted his presence, and repaired to Puranjaya, whom they thus addressed:
“Most renowned Kshatriya, we have come to thee to solicit thy alliance against our enemies; it will not become thee to disappoint our hope.”
The Prince replied, “Let this your Indra, the monarch of the spheres, the god of a hundred sacrifices, consent to carry me upon his shoulders, and I will wage battle with your adversaries as your ally.” The gods and Indra readily answered, “So be it;” and the latter assuming the shape of a bull, the Prince mounted upon his shoulder.
Being then filled with delight, and invigorated by the power of the eternal ruler of all movable and immovable things, he destroyed in the battle that ensued all the enemies of the gods; and because he annihilated the demon host whilst seated upon the shoulder [or the hump, Kakud] of the bull, he thence obtained the appellation Kukutstha [seated on the hump].

Bhagavata Purana adds several title to his name: that he captured the city of the Asuras, whence his name Puranjaya, ‘Victor of the city’, he is also termed Praranjaaya, ‘vanquisher of foes;’ he is also called Indravaha ‘born by Indra.’.............To be contd…[next post, the version of Vayu Purana]

If we place reliance on the authenticity of the Puranic literature to reconstruct history of India then very important factors emerge. Regarding the above quota on political strife between the ruling group and their opponents during Treta Yuga it is found that between the Devas and Asuras of the Aryan descent, the Devas and their patron god Indra had fallen to very low level in power sharing.

Is it not astonishing to see that contrary to the characteristics and qualities of Indra with his thunder bolt using victor as depicted in so many Vedic verses, during the times of composition of the Vishnu Purana, Indra's position has degraded to such a low level that the all powerful lord of the yore readily agrees to be a beast of burden to carry a Kshatriya Prince on his back walking on his fours to save the lives and honour of the war beaten gods [Devas i.e. Priests] ! This shows that Asuras had grown so strong as compelled the Devasand their patron ruler-god, Indra, to seek Providential intervention in the form of Vishnu or some other Superior power !

What a grand fall !

Does this not show the signs of Priests appeasing the rulers to grind their own axes at any cost and to enjoy fruits of materialistic life by getting extermination of their adversaries in the style presented in the Vishnu Purana, one of the oldest one among 18 puranas.

Reminds me of a similar event when Hindu Priestly class went to foreigners to fight Indian Asuras of Buddhism at mount Abu.

Even prior to the Devasura battle given above in the post Hirankshipu Daitya the father of famous Prahalad of the Puranas is found to be engaged in the fight against the Devas and their ways of worship ! It was pure Devasura battle in which Vishnu had to descend on land to kill a Disyu or Asura at the bidding of priests ? See, kindly, relevant details in Vishnu Purana scattered at several places.

Your candid comments are invited.

Friends,

For proper understanding the Proto- history of India, we have to take up a few points ungrudging; they may be underlined as :

First, Devas and Pitras, the latter also addressed as Asuras/Daityas/Dasas in Indian and Iranian traditions, both were human beings and lived together for a considerable period of time.
Secondly, we have to accept the source based research about their genealogy or to provide alternate one needless to add based on the source material.

Third point relates to the identification of geographical area [Towns plains, rivers, valleys, mountains, seas and oceans of the region] inhabited by the Devas and Pitras and their fight for supremacy as recorded in traditions as Devasura Yudhas and Sagarmanthan.

Fourth point is the most important which requires proper understanding of the definition of the words 'Arya' which means same language speaking group at some point of Pre-historic period and to accept that it does not refer to the false notion of superiority of a particular 'race.'

Now coming to the present discussion, if Identification of the 'Central Asia' including some parts of India known as Uttarkuru-Devaloka-Pitrloka to the ancient people as enshrined in the traditions of India and Iran and as identified in the preceding discussion by various contributors is accepted as genuine/or rejected on the basis of stronger source based arguments, no output can be achieved in foreseeable time.

This will be possible only if we come out of our own created cobwebs of prejudices and make ourselves agreeable or receptive to all the available ideas on the issue.

Kindly join with your constructive criticism and weighty arguments otherwise, there is no use of spiting ink on the pages of books or the internet sites.

Critical comments and searching points for inclusion in this discussion on all the issues related with the theme of the thread from one and all are welcome!

It is the need of the hour to open up ourselves to take up real issues and face the outcome without reservation of any sort in finding the ancient abode, genealogy and chronology of our ancestors and then proceed towards taking up the research on the ancient History of the Jats.

Thanks and regards,

While discussing Deva-Asura/Pitr/Daitya original home, it must not be forgotten that the Term 'Aryan' primarily denotes a linguistic concept as defined by Max Mullar, who is responsible for the vogue of the term. He had clearly said that "'Aryan, in scientific language, is utterly inapplicable to race. It means language and nothing but language." [Collected works, new impression, 1898, p.90.]

Bharatiya aryon se taatparya hai veh arya jo bharata main rahte thhe aur jinhone rigved ki rachna kari.

Irani arya veh arya the jo bharat se uth kar iran ki taraf gaye thhe. Isi kaaran unki dasyu se ladaai nahi hui aur veh dasyu ko arya hi maante thhe. Bharat varsh mai anekoanek dharm aur mat utpann ho rahe thhe jo vedic dharm ki khilafat kar rahe thhe jaise baudh dharm, jaini dharm, Carvaka dharm aadi.

Iraniyon ka dharm bhi vedic dharm ki khilafat par hi khada thha.

Friend,

Let us first understand the Rigveda Samhita, which has nearly 10,500 verses, grouped into 1,017 hymns collected in ten Mandalas [books] of unequal length.

These hymns are composed by various poets [risis]. The first and the tenth mandalas are composed by many authors of different families; the unity between them is that each of them contains 191 hymns. They are thus placed in the beginning and in the end.

The mandalas from II to VII have complete unity of authorship. II to VI being composed by Gritsamada, Visvamitra, Vamdeva, Atri, Bhardwaja and the poets of their families respectively and Mandala VII is the composition of Vasistha. Kanva and his family formed the predominant group of authors of the VIII Mandala.

The whole of the IX is made up of hymns addressed to Soma Pavamana; its poets belong to different families. Except the IX mandala which is addressed wholly to Soma Pavamana, everywhere hymn to Agni come first, then those addressed to Indra, followed by those addressed to other deities.

This shows that the Rigveda is a collection of the compositions of different risis and it regarding its composition and contents it may be noted that it contains only verses, generally[leaving aside a few complicated metres verses] in simple metres of three or four lines of eight, eleven and twelve syllables.

Many a standard translations of 'the Vedic literature' in various languages are available. 'The term Vedic literature' connotes Vedas, Samhitas, Brahmanas, Vedangs, Upvedas, Suttras etc.etc and therefore, any study of the culture of the Vedas or Vedic Period must be based on this immense mass of literature.

Now we can proceed to find out whether the Rigveda risis remembered/referred to anything hinting at the abode of their forefathers or not.

Could any Vedic scholar intervene in the discussion and guide us on this very crucial point ?

Thanks.

Friends,

We have already tried to identify Uttarkuru/Devaloka/Pitraloka as the abode of the ancient times Aryas in preceding posts.

The information in Rigaveda (IX. 113. 7-11)contains the longing of a dying Vedic person to go to the next world known as Pitr Loka, where his departed forefathers lived. In that place Yama continues to rule. The English translation of these verses [cited from The Cultural Heritage of India, Volume I, Calcutta, 1958] is produced herein under :

''O Pavamana, place me in that deathless un-decaying world , wherein the light of heaven is set and everlasting lustre shines;

Make me immortal in that realm where dwells the KING, Vivasvan's son, where is the secret shrine of heaven, where are those waters young and fresh;

Make me immortal in that real where they move even as they list, in the third sphere of inmost heaven where lucid worlds are full of light;

Make me immortal in that realm of eager wish and strong desire, the region of radiant moon, where food and full delight are found;

Make me immortal in that realm where happiness and transports abound, where joys and felicities combine, and longing wishes are fulfilled.''

The readers are requested to draw their own conclusion on the meaning of the three verses quoted above on the realm of King Yama son of Vivasvan, described as Pitrloka, where the departed forefathers lived of the dying man and post their views on the issue.

Thanks and regards,

Friends,

After reading the quoets of verses given in the preceding post pause and reflect.

What a beautiful abode it must be when Yama and his kinsmen lived there !

We must beware of the writings of the later day such authors [whom Swami Dayanand Sarswati has rightly addressed as Paunga Pandits], who have penned account of the Auras as bad people and try to understand the facts of history with open mind.

The Asuras were just a branch of the 'Aryas' as the other branch was known as Devas. They were men of flesh and blood and their abode was on the earth.

The attempt of the contributors on this thread has been to present the historical facts that the Asuras and Devas sprang from the first big family or tribe of 7th Manu [Manu Vivasvana] which prospered after the commencement of last proverbial flood described in literature of several religious books.

The Asuras belonged to senior branch and as such became rulers and the Devas belonged to junior branch. They lived in Devaloka-Pittarloka-Uttarkuru region and there started struggle among them as the latter tried to snatch ruling power from the Asuras.

Their struggle for power continued for several years and a number of battles were fought at different places spread in present day Asia. Some of them have found mention in the form of Deva-asura Yudhas and Sagarmanthan episode in the traditions of both India and Iran!!

I reproduce a para from above chapter of Mahabharata which is astrological statement and may help to determine the time of Mahabharata war !!!

"Beholding these signs that indicated the perverse course of Time, and seeing that the day of the new moon coincided with the thirteenth (and the fourteenth) lunation, Hrishikesa, summoning the Yadavas, said unto them these words: ‘The fourteenth lunation has been made the fifteenth by Rahu once more. Such a day had happened at the time of the great battle of the Bharatas. It has once more appeared, it seems, for our destruction."

Pitr Loka atmaon ke nivaas ki jagah hai. Yeh Dharti par nahi ho sakti kyonki Rigved mein saaf likha hai ki yeh Mrityu ke baad ki baat hai.

Sawaal yeh uth tha hai ki atma sirf uttar kuru mein hi kyon vicharan karegi?

Friend,

It is nothing more than the sweet memories of the Rig Vedic Aryans about their old abode.

You are right that the longing of the dying man to stay after his death in the abode of his ancestors is a veiled admission of their belonging to 'Pitrloka' one of the names of the traditional home i.e. Pitrloka-Devaloka-Uttarkuru which was a place full of material things for the enjoyment of life.

Thanks

Friend,

We have been told by the authorities on the Vedas that soul is immortal and with the decay of one body [which we call death of a person], it immediately enters another body.

If we agree to accept this interpretation, then there does not arise the question of finding a place anywhere on the earth or elsewhere [aakash or patala] for residence of Soul !!!

Thanks !

For finding the meaning of word 'Dev' there is an authentic book written by Swami Omanand Saraswari - Haryana ke Vir Youdhey. It can be read at Jatland wiki on following URL -

http://www.jatland.com/home/Haryana_Ke_Vir_Youdheya

It basically talks about ancient history and states that Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh were early Devas (त्रिदेव). It may be possible that 'Devloka' may be our own country (India) which was later known by many names - Aryavart, Bharat etc. And Asurloka or Pataal-Loka may be the southern hemisphere of earth - today's North and South American continents. Swami Daynand writes that Pataal-Loka means "the part of earth which is beneath our feet (Paad) पाद तले - अपने पैरों के नीचे - पाताल यानि जहां हम खड़े हैं, उसके ठीक नीचे वाला पृथ्वी का दूसरा हिस्सा. To be precise, if you poke a hole into the earth near Allahabad, and pierce a long pipe through the earth, it will come out somewhere between New York and Chicago.

One meaning of word Dev is someone with a huge and strong body (like Hanuman or Bheema).

Unfortunately, many ancient books, especially Mahabharata, have got surplus text added by selfish Brahmins in later centuries, after thousands of years of its original creation - during the times when Budhism was spreading vastly.

In the 11th Chapter of Satyarthprakash, Swami Dayanand writes -

Friends,

Shri Deswalji has produced the relevant portion on the latter interpolation of the vested interests to our old Pauranic literature by citing the manipulation done in adding numerous mass of verses to original epic 'Bharat' which contained 10,000 shlokas composed initially by Ved Vyasa and his disciples and which has at present about one lac shlokas, strange enough without mention of the compositors. Same thing seems discernible with regard to other ancient literature where facts and fiction have been so merged as one cannot identify the facts without application of mind with full alertness with an eye on finding 'objective historical sources'. Then, one have to proceed to compare and contrast so collected sources with other available sources and then could arrive at tentative, not final, conclusions regarding our ancient history.

Thanks Deswalji for this beautiful quote, which it is hoped, will further guide us on the right path to find the original abode and chronology of the Indo-Aryans !!

Friends,

By posting this eye opener post Shri D N Deswal has at the right time drawn the attention of the readers to be cautious while dealing with the long past events mentioned in our old literature. Now it is the duty of all of us to remain alert and use discretion while agreeing to or rejecting any proposition based on the sacred literature of the yore.

If someone could throw light on the composition of our Vedas [particularly Rigveda] and Paurans and identify their contents, linguistics unity, authors and their contemporaneous with the rulers mentioned in them, it could prove of immense use in deciding the chronology of history of India during the Pre-historic and Proto-historic periods.

By correlating dynasty lists and lists of the composers of the Rigvedic verses and verifying the Astrological reference from this literature with other available archaeological findings, perhaps, some tangible could be derived to untangle the knot of past history. !

The views of the readers are invited. If they could help us in sifting the myths from historical narration added by later day authors in the original history and Puranas, this would be a great service to the history.

thanks,

A Caution :

Historians should eschew the tendency to invent history without any anchor.

History is best when created, better when re-constructed and worst when invented.
