I cant help but mention how easy it is to punch keyboards and wish for an Iron Fist. The thing about this Iron Fist is that it is very much desired if the recipient of the fist is someone else. As soon as the fist hits closer home via the state, mindless jingoism like that stupid article is the first casualty.
Let me elucidate since many of use here have probably not seen this iron fist in action. I was around 8 years old when one early Sunday morning I saw my 50yr old neighbor being taken away in a Punjab Police gypsy. His crime was that certain militants had taken shelter for the night in his ancestral village home 150 kms away in Mullanpur, Ludhiana. He was picked up since this was a standard anti-militancy practice in those days to pick up and detain without warrant anybody who could be remotely associated with militants. He came back a week later, in an ambulance. My parents never completely told me what his injuries were, but they were serious enough for him to be unable to work for a month or so. He wasn't called up to courts as there probably wasn't any case on him but he suffered for some gun-totting militants spending the night in his village home. That's your iron fist in action.
Gill uncle as we called him, was in his 50's then and my father's colleague and worked for the central govt. God fearing and polite, he was always good to us kids. But I never saw him smile again after this incident. Very soon, his son married in Canada and he and his wife migrated after retirement. Did this incident had any role to play in his migration? Maybe not. But would I have blamed him if his sons would have taken up the gun to avenge his humiliation?
