Varna in our society:

  • the Bhramins vedic priests.
  • the Kshatriya kings, governors and soldiers.
  • the Vaishyas cattle herders, agriculturists, artisans and merchants.
  • the Shudras labourers (this include field labourers) and service providers.
Brief Background about Jats :
Before we get into this it is important to note that there were some tribes who were nomads and were outside of this system. Now for Jats, they were tribes headed by a nobleman who later moved to the highly fertile Punjab, Haryana and other surrounding regions. They took agriculture as their main occupation.
How Varna work:
To understand this first we need to understand the varna. There are 4 varnas as specified in Manusmriti. We also need to understand that Jatis keep changing from one varna to other. I am quoting an example During medieval period, in the 16th century, the Hindu king Hem Chand Vikramaditya born in to a family of Purohits (Brahmins) got involved in business (Vaishya) and changed his profile again and became a warrior (Kshatriya) to win 22 battles continuously against Afghan rebels and Mughal forces throughout north India (source : Richards, John F., ed. (1995) [1993]. The Mughal Empire. The New Cambridge History of India (7th ed.). Cambridge University Press. p. 13. ISBN 9780521566032. Retrieved 2013-04-24.) Similarly Saini who were Kshatriya (Source:"The Sainis believe that their ancestors were Yadavas and that it was the same lineage in which Krishna was born. In the 43rd generation of the Yadavas there was a king known as Shoor or Sur, the son of King Vidaratha....It was in the name of these, father and son, that the community was known as Shoorsaini or Sursaini." People of India: Haryana, p 430, Kumar Suresh Singh, Madan Lal Sharma, A. K. Bhatia, Anthropological Survey of India, Published by Published on behalf of Anthropological Survey of India by Manohar Publishers, 1994) has slowly fallen into lower varna over the time. Look at sunar who used to be Shudras but later many became businessman and started their own business and many of them moved to Vaishya.
Where Jat fall in Varna:
Jat is not a jati like kumhar or khati so their profession could differ from time to time or area to area. Jats are mostly landlord farmers not tenant farmers. Tenant farmers or cultivators or labourers fall in shudra. Shudra are the one who provide the service to other three varna. It is possible that there could be some Jat Shudras who cultivate someone's field but mostly are land owners. Another point to note is that most of the kisans in India were tenant farmers or labourers so they were mostly shudras. There were also Jats who were kings and some were also in government as elite or administrator. They were Kshatriya. Shudra though were much better than those who lived on other people's alms. So most of he jats fall in Vaishyas.

I think Jayani ji has tried seriously to attempt the question of varna of Jats in Hindu religion .This very aspect of our identity and relation to Hindu religion should be discussed in details.

Kitna bhi uljhaa lo is topic ko.....

Hindu dharm bhi khud isi tareh uljha hua hai in pando ke karan..

one example:-

ek devi/devtaao ka mandir aisa, jahan chamde ki cheez le jana bhi mana (wallet, belt)

aur ek devi/deevtao ka mandir aisa jisme bali chaddhti hai bakro ki.... aur to aur, uski fictional pic me bhi 5-10 haath bana rakhe hain, kisi hath me kataar, kisi me gandassi, kisi me kisi rakshas ka sar, kisi me bhala dusare kisi ki chatti me dikhaya hoya....

ye pande itne haraamzade hain ki in ne aapas me segmentation kar rakha hai... ye dwivedi, ye trivedi, ye chaturvedi, ye konkanasth, iyer, iyenger, saraswat, maithili, gaur..... falaaan dhikad.....arrtam patram

Meri really sister ka naam Raveena h, aur to aur SRK ka ladke ka naam aryaan hai,Mere yahan office mein ek bnda haoi veera swamy h lekin vo christian follow karta hai, ek annu hai vo bhi christian -aapke hissab se to sayad usko hindu follow karna chahiye tha? ebb tu naam tain bhi nyu kahega ki ye hindu ka naam hai ya ye muslim ka? Ravinder tujhe jo sikh ko follow karta hai usme bhi mil jayega. Aur jo naam k basis pe flat nhi dete unki soch aapki tarah hi brain wash ho rakhi h usse jyada kuch nhi.

The word Hinduism derives from a Persian term denoting the inhabitants of the land beyond the Indus, a river in present-day Pakistan. By the early nineteenth century the term had entered popular English usage to describe the predominant religious traditions of South Asia, and it is now used by Hindus themselves. Hindu beliefs and practices are enormously diverse, varying over time and among individuals, communities, and regional areas.

Unlike Buddhism, Jainism, or Sikhism, Hinduism has no historical founder. Its authority rests instead upon a large body of sacred texts that provide Hindus with rules governing rituals, worship, pilgrimage, and daily activities, among many other things. Although the oldest of these texts may date back four thousand years, the earliest surviving Hindu images and temples were created some two thousand years later

What are the roots of Hinduism?
Hinduism developed over many centuries from a variety of sources: cultural practices, sacred texts, and philosophical movements, as well as local popular beliefs. The combination of these factors is what accounts for the varied and diverse nature of Hindu practices and beliefs. Hinduism developed from several sources:

Prehistoric and Neolithic culture, which left material evidence including abundant rock and cave paintings of bulls and cows, indicating an early interest in the sacred nature of these animals.
The Indus Valley civilization, located in what is now Pakistan and northwestern India, which flourished between approximately 2500 and 1700 BCE, and persisted with some regional presence as late as 800 BCE. The civilization reached its high point in the cities of Harrapa and Mohenjo-Daro. Although the physical remains of these large urban complexes have not produced a great deal of explicit religious imagery, archaeologists have recovered some intriguing items, including an abundance of seals depicting bulls, among these a few exceptional examples illustrating figures seated in yogic positions; terra-cotta female figures that suggest fertility; and small anthropomorphic sculptures made of stone and bronze. Material evidence found at these sites also includes prototypes of stone linga (phallic emblems of the Hindu god Shiva). Later textual sources assert that indigenous peoples of this area engaged in linga worship.
According to recent theories, Indus Valley peoples migrated to the Gangetic region of India and blended with indigenous cultures, after the decline of civilization in the Indus Valley. A separate group of Indo European speaking people migrated to the subcontinent from West Asia. These peoples brought with them ritual life including fire sacrifices presided over by priests, and a set of hymns and poems collectively known as the Vedas.
The indigenous beliefs of the pre-Vedic peoples of the subcontinent of India encompassed a variety of local practices based on agrarian fertility cults and local nature spirits. Vedic writings refer to the worship of images, tutelary divinities, and the phallus.

..............................................................................................................................................................
Hindi evolved from Prakrit which itself evolved from the devnagri script which in turn owes it's origins to sanskrit. Though there is no consensus for a specific time, Hindi originated as local dialects such as Braj, Awadhi, and finally Khari Boli after the turn of tenth century.
Aree o bhai, Khadi boli mai Persian words bhi hain wo kyon bhool jata hai hai tu.

Hinduism is a collective term applied to the many philosophical and religious traditions native to India. Hinduism has neither a specific moment of origin nor a specific founder. Rather, the tradition understands itself to be timeless, having always existed. Indeed, its collection of sacred texts is known, as a whole, as Sanatana Dharma, "The Eternal Teaching." It is thus a complex tradition that encompasses numerous interrelated religious doctrines and practices that have some common characteristics but which lack any unified system of beliefs and practices. Hinduism encompasses a number of major sects, as well as countless subsects with local or regional variations. On one level, it is possible to view these sects as distinct religious traditions, with often very specific theologies and ritual traditions; on another level, however, they often understand themselves to be different means to reach a common end. The Hindu worldview is grounded in the doctrines of samsara (the cycle of rebirth) and karma (the universal law of cause and effect), and fundamentally holds that one's actions (including one's thoughts) directly determine one's life, both one's current life and one's future lives. Many, but not all, Hindus hold that the cosmos is populated by numerous deities and spiritual beings — gods and goddesses, or devas — who actively influence the world and who interact with humans. The tradition is typically divided into four major sects: Shaiva (devotees of the god Shiva), Vaishnava (devotees of the god Vishnu), Shakta (devotees of the goddess), and Smarta (those who understand the ultimate form of the divine to be abstract and all encompassing, Brahman).

Quick Fact Details:

Formed: The exact beginnings of Hinduism are impossible to determine, since they evolved as time and culture impacted the religious ideas of early India.
Deity: Many Hindus recognize a vast diversity of gods and goddesses; others believe in a Hindu "trinity" (trimurti): Brahman, Vishnu, Shiva; yet others claim an essential monotheism, believing that all the gods are manifestations of one.

I think Jayani ji has tried seriously to attempt the question of varna of Jats in Hindu religion .This very aspect of our identity and relation to Hindu religion should be discussed in details.

A majority of Jats were not landlords. Jaats used to be "peasants" and agriculture was their main occupation. Jaats in west Punjab continued professions like herding.

Majority counts not minority. Majority of Jats were involved in professions like herding and farming. If we go by Hindu varna system, majority of Jaats fall into "Shudra" category. Lahore court verdict is a proof of that fact.

Where does Jat fit in Indian society ?

Before we come to any conclusion first we need to know that there were lot of tribes in India which were outside this caste system. They had their own world. They preferred to live away from main society. They survived on mostly hunting, simple farming, stealing, robbing. They had their own beliefs, own devtas, own pitr. I believe we jats are one of them. We jats mostly took agriculture as our occupation. We got settled within the society and we also set up our own villages. That is why we jats (tribe) are divided in religion but not in caste. Because we are late entrant in the indian society we dont have much in common with them.

As far as our status is concerned we enjoyed diff status in diff part. We are also called "chaudhary shaheb" because we are chaudhary of our villages that speak of us on its own. As far as our varan is concerned let me quote the below from Britannica (which looks correct to me).

The Muslim Jat in the western regions are organized in hundreds of groups tracing their descent through paternal lines; they are mostly camel herders or labourers. Those of India and of the Punjabi areas of Pakistan are more often peasant proprietors (Source : http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/301575/Jat)

The above also suggest that in India Jats were mostly peasant proprietors and a peasant proprietor cannot be shudra.

As we have different customs than the religious hindus it is possoble that some people might used to call us shudra based on that rather than our profession.

I never said that you are not replying to me n me least bothered about it.I said when people are asking you question you are simply putting up wiki links rather than having your own thought process. Also on top of oit you are saying ' argalan baatein kar rahe hain sab' but you keep putting wiki links only baki tune ab tak varan system mein jaton ka kya sathan hai uspe kuch byan nhi kia.

enjoy your hindusim n jaise tu kehta hai ki lgo hindu naam kyun rakhate hain ya hindu padhati se vivah kyun karte hai , chal issi baat pe ek sawaal puchta hun n jawaab hoto de dena verna wiki link chepta reh iss thread pe

You are a hindu so Do you agree with IPC's hindu marriage act ?

DO you really think so? then why we had so many riots after Independence where thousands have died?

That black chapter was sponsored by a few misguided communalists' outbursts and effects of surcharged political upheaval of that period. The communal frenzy was given fire by a few at that time that caused action and reaction in different parts of the Indian subcontinent.

Even these days also you see from time to time vested interests loose no time to give local issues involving two persons belonging to two different castes or communities, or religious faiths or two regions/ states as communal/caste/regional tensions which they seldom are.

But even after strong provocations they are localised and curtailed shows the futility of the efforts of the divisive forces.

I still hold the view that, by and large, all Indians are proud of their glorious common heritage and culture and all indians are one and united to keep India as a strong nation and none would succeed in shaking this belief of the PEOPLE OF INDIA.

Upender you cant explain religious beliefs by science and logics. No one else can either.

bhai gaddari ka matlab hota hai pehle kissi eek cheez ko sahi ya galt bataoo....pher apni baaat se palatt jaoo...aise bahut saare incidents hote rehte hai jl pe..

Upender ji, if there's no one definition of Hinduism as a religion or a culture then everybody is free to practice it as they choose. There's no designated authority or body who can define its confines and hence point out who's a violator of its tenets. As such, its no one's preserve to call someone who questions it or abuses it as a traitor. This religion and its followers have continually evolved over the ages and will continue to do so.

Kyun bhaka raha hai.
