Research on history of Jat clans

Hello sir. I would like to make a query.
I have a friend who needs an urgent help.
My friend is a Rana jaat who wants to marry a Rana rajput. (There is no problem of marrying inter caste in the family)
But the issue that arose is their being Rana.
The rajput Rana uses the title, but are originally Kondal gotra, Bhamnauria rajputs of Jaswan Dun (HP)
And the Rana jaat is from Haryana.
The family of the Rana jaat friend is very strict and does not want to complicate matters.
I just wanted to know if there is any possibility in the marriage between them?
Your answer will be very helpful.
Warm regards.

Welcome Ridhi on Jatland for your first post. Marriage is a family affair and possible if both families mutually agree. As regards Rana it is based on title in both Rajputs and Jats. Rana as such gives no privilege for marriage.

'RANA' Gotra
Laxman Ji,

As you may be knowing now a days 'Rana' is the result of two processes, buth taking place for the same reason viz. upward social mobility through elite labels.
(1) First modfying the gotra name to obtai an intermediary term containing in part the term' Rana' e.g. Chaudharan (Sanskritic Chaudharayana)is modified as Chaudaahrana, chaudaah is abadoned and we have 'Rana' ready to serve our purpose. Some other examples of the process are:kaakran, Jatran, jasran etc.
(2)Rana is the end product of the term Raja travelling from Sanskrit to Prakrit to apabhransha and used by the privileged to indicate a title. In course of time the title took thje folrm of Gotra. Gotra as Panini tells us the progeny starting with a grand-son(pautra-prabhriti aptyam Gotram ).Through gotra we trce ancestary. But the arbitrary nature of humans to assume tittles or nick names given by others stick around to assume the form of a gotras name only to be dislodged by another. This happens in forward looking communikties more easily than in static groups.

Dr Rana, thank you for that wonderful quote from Panini on gotra which is really like one of the pillars or foundations of our society. How does it differ from the another practice which stresses that gotra names have to originate only from 'Rishis', which never really made sense but is quoted all the time.

Gotra

Naneen Ji,

Panini's is a uniquely technical work. The term 'gotra' is evolved by him to serve the purpose of a technical term in his system of grammar which is compedium of rules explaning the formations of available words before him in Sanskrit language. We can say that he had his own method (or some kind of survey of the language made). This technical Tern 'gotra' comes handy to him when he explains various family names of ancestry of several generarions of any person available in language. For example a person's name/family name be 'Garga', His son would be Known as 'Gaargya' in addition to his personal if any, and his son in turn would be called 'Gagyayana' as long as the above Gaargya lives. So we have seen the technical term regulating the formations which indicate the 'laukika' gotra, Panini gives us a mine of informaion about the gotras extant in his times. Explanations could b samples only. Panini in addition gives a number of gotras ( quite large ) in his Ganapaatha. Ther are many from which modern day gotras have been sought to be derived. Some of hem ar found verbatim as they sound today.
As regards gotras related to Rishis, it has to do with the tracing of ancestry through guruship. There are two types of sambandha viz. from parents , from a teacher. In fact in early times both were observed. A group of gotras belonged to a super group of several gotras. these super groups in turn had their own names called Pravaras each headed by a Rishi. With the passage of time the institutions went thoufg changes in some cases beyond recognition. We are given the Kashyap gora in case the fora name is los for any reason. You might botice the relics of Tishi baSed gotras in our alumni system in educational institutions.

Surun Gotra

Surun (सुरुण) is a Jat Gotra found in Rajasthan. Dr Mothsara has reported so far only one family in Dadrewa of Churu District in Rajasthan. They Came from Sandwa village in Bhiwani district (Haryana).

More information is to be searched of this Gotra.

Yes, Prashant Ji, it is a Braahmanic innovation, I think. But the word Brahmanic not in the sense in which we commonly understand it for

the brahmin vara/caste. This should have something to do with Brahman i.e. Veda. The seers (Rishis) of veda are not necessarily to be

taken to belong to the later day classification of caste. In fact, the whole Upanishadic tradition is attributed to the Kshatriyas. No doubt,

there has been a good amountof social churning over milleniums leaving the cantours of varna/caste blurred. The theorytical prescriptions

by learned social thinkers were overtaken by stark realities on the ground, rendering attempts to classify society in a straight jacket

fashion, as we see it happening in the modern age. Thus we find Manu struggling to explain (how unconvincingly!) the so called proliferation

of Castes through the phenomenon of varnasankara and leading thinkers like Panini and Kautilya and Manu and many others seen using

the two terms variously, sometimes in the narrow sense of a caste and sometimes for wider identity of a varna.

Dr Rana, once again thanks for providing good insight with clarity. It is refreshing to read it. I am likely to comment 'aur aan deyo isse isse ..'
Going back to something that you wrote regarding Panini, where you remarked that his works carry great many names which will be very useful for our inquiry about clan names. Can you share those or we can request Dr Rajpal Singh to create a new thread on that subject. I was also curious about the date of Panini, which you claimed cannot be later than 5th century BCE. What is a more realistic timeframe for Panini.
