The rhetorical references made by the right wing political alchemists of India to the Gujarat saga (some of them happen to be on this site) have started giving a palpable sense of fatigue and nausea. During Nazi dictatorship Germany also made phenomenal progress - both economically and militarily. But at what cost? Democratic rights and civil liberties were crushed with iron hand. A reign of terror, xenophobic massacre, and macabre killing of Jews in Gas Chambers still send a shiver down the spines. Man doesn’t live merely by bread and butter. Dignity is also of paramount importance. Moreover, Spectre of a few highways, electric grids and shopping malls in some metros should not be taken as the only criteria of development. As may be seen in the State Wise Human Development Index of India for 2012, 10 Indian States are still ahead of Gujarat which includes even Haryana. Gujarat might have recorded a phenomenal rise in the fortunes of the billionaire-fraternity having stakes there. But have the benefits of growth really trickled down to the huts in the far-flung hamlets to the extent it should have been? What is the spectre of rural health care, education in rural sector, employment generation in rural areas and the overall improvement in the lives of the marginal farmers and agricultural workers? As I have never been to Gujarat, I am asking these questions for my knowledge, no offence please.

It is, however, only a pity that a country of billions has only two individuals at their disposal who are worthy of becoming the Prime Minister of largest democracy of the world. In my considered opinion there are at least 10-15 members on Jatland who could prove to be better Prime Ministers than the two under comparison. Why this hullaballoo. The topic has become very boring by now. The original poster may like to close it down. Just a suggestion, no offence please.

Test hona chahiye, politicians ke liye.

The most democratic party in India has announced their president even before nominations, Congratulations Mr. Rajnath Singh.

Personally- happy to not to see Gadkari back and someone charismatic gaining the leadership but he is not a good news for Modi, another setback to his supporters.

Is this pseudosecular propaganda that Modi wants to be like a military conqueror/dictator who will conquer the whole world in 10 years?

I hope his die-hard fans have not lost it completely.

This is awesome. Talk about playing right into your opponents' hands.

Be it Modi ( BJP) or Rahul ( Congress ) , any more than required PR campaign ( for instance - India Shining) is going to create bhadak among general voters which would lead to dent in their ultimate goal.

On a lighter note :- राजपाल जी आप इसमें मंगल ग्रह की सभ्यता पर मोदी की विजय पताका वाला फोटू डालना भूल गए !

Big money for Modi, Didi loses out

The economic tale of two Indian states could not be more starkly different. Under Mamata Banerjee’s chief ministership, West Bengal managed to implement new investment proposals of just Rs. 935 crore from April to November 2012, while Narendra Modi’s Gujarat acted on Rs. 49,405 crore — 50 rimes more. Unsurprisingly, Gujarat tops the chart while Bengal is at the bottom among the major states.

Andhra Pradesh ( Rs. 10,745 crore), Maharashtra ( Rs. 7,021 crore), Madhya Pradesh ( Rs. 2,157 crore) and the much smaller Punjab ( Rs. 1,042) is ahead of West Bengal in implementation of investment proposals, according to the Union ministry of commerce and industries.

The ministry’s latest report on Industrial Entrepreneurs Memorandum (IEM), which measures flow of investment into different states, shows even Bengal’s former Left Front regime in better light. While Buddhadeb Bhattacharya had implemented fresh capital of Rs. 1,163 crore in his last year as chief minister in 2010-11, the Trinamool Congress managed to implement just Rs. 325 crore in 2011-12 after sweeping to power, outperformed even by the far smaller Jharkhand.

Banerjee came to power riding on massive and violent farmers’ protests over acquisition of land for industry in Nandigram and Singur. The Singur protests saw Tata take its proposed Nano factory from Bengal to Gujarat.

Lately, Banerjee has been holding regular meetings with industrialists and business chambers to woo investors to her cash-strapped state. Last month, she was in Delhi for a first-of-its-kind discussion with the Capital’s top industrialists. But everywhere she went, she made it clear her administration would not acquire land for private investors to set up industries, ignoring perhaps the most important demand of India Inc.

My comment : This is surprising that Gujarat got 7 times more investment than Andhra Pradesh and 5 times more investment than Maharashtra.

Ironically Bheem bhai, I read this news thread a few days ago which raised the following questions for Gujarat which are more often than not, ignored:

Why the CEO of Gujarat and his party have vehemently been opposing the Central Government in its Foreign Direct Investment plan but have gone all overboard to woo foreign investments for the State?
Why a huge wall has been constructed just opposite the Summit venue so that no one can see the miserable conditions of the people who live in the slums there?
Why justice in Gujarat is a far cry for the poor and very specially for vulnerable groups like dalits, adivasis and minorities?
Why the CEO presided over the killing of hundreds of innocent people and the marginalization of many more, in the State?
Why some of his closest aides have been indicted or charge-sheeted in the annihilation of minorities?
Why the State is the worst performer in malnutrition with 69.7% of children upto the age of five, anaemic and 44.6% malnourished?
Why according to the Global Hunger Index Policy Research Institute India ranks 66 among the 88 countries listed; and Gujarat happens to be among the five worst performers?
Why the literacy rate in Gujarat is marginally above the national average but extremely low in the tribal areas; primary education in Gujarat is in the doldrums and the worst sufferers are the poor and the marginalized?
Why just 3.1% of the MOUs signed during the Summit in 2011 are actually under implementation?
Why female foeticide is high in Gujarat and today the Gujarat sex ratio has a skewed rate of 918 - making it one of the worst States in the country?
Why unemployment is rampant in Gujarat and that the average daily wage for casual workers in Gujarat is just about Rs 83 in the rural areas and Rs 106 in the urban areas?
Why large sections of the minority communities are confined to ghettoes and cannot live in neighbourhood of their choice?
Why Gujarat has the most draconian ‘Freedom of Religion Law’ in the country which necessitates that the person has to seek the permission of the civil authority before they can convert to a religion of their choice?
Why three of the top 10 polluted areas in the country are in Gujarat?
Why rampant corruption in the State is never allowed to be made into an issue?

Do they weigh every child ?
btw I am quiet apolitical.

A few nuggets from Modi's charismatic speech at SRCC. Just confirms my opinion that he is just a good administrator and orator, taking plaudits for a an economically progressive state without any plans of his own. Would a seasoned, mature leader seen as the future PM make such childish comparisons and remarks?

1. Delhi ka doodh Gujarat se ata hai. I suppose he is referring to Amul. But Amul has extensive operations in the north and sources milk locally. Moreover, cattle owners of Haryana, UP and Punjab will have a lot to say about Delhi ka doodh kahan se ata hai.

2. Metro ki carriages maine banwayi. So what if Delhi metros carriages are made in Gujarat. Kya Maruti car Hooda ne banwayi? No state manufactures every automobile it uses.

3. Singapore aur Europe mein Gujarat ka aaloo, tamatar bikta hai. A lot Indian states export foodgrains and vegetables to many countries.
