Dear Friends,

Here is a personal experience, as well as a moment of national pride, which I want to share with you. Hope you find it worth the time you put in reading it :

"In the middle of 1965 India-Pakistan war, US govt - then a close friend of Pakistan - threatened India with stopping food-aid (remember "PL-480"?). For a food deficient India this threat was serious and humiliating. So much so that in the middle of war, Prime Minister (Late) Lal Bahadur Shastri went to Ram Leela Grounds in Delhi and appealed to each Indian to observe one-meal-fast every week to answer the American threat. As a school boy, I joined those millions who responded to Shastri ji's call. I continued the fast even when the war was over and India became self sufficient in food. Hurt deep by the national humiliation suffered at the hands of the US govt, I had vowed
to stop my weekly fast only when India starts giving aid to USA.

It took just 40 years. Last week THE day arrived. When Indian ambassador in Washington DC handed over a cheque of US$ 50 million to the US govt, two plane loads of food, medical aid and other relief materials were waiting to fly to the USA. Time to break the fast? With no bad feeling about the USA, and good wishes for the Katrina victims, this humble Indian feels proud of the distance India has covered in 40 years. Let's celebrate a New India!"

Sorry folks. I call fraud on this one. Some facts are true, but others are a bit suspicious.

1. IIT Madras hostels have indeed had a tradition of skipping a meal (or was it a no egg day) and this was indeed done to support the soldiers during 1965. Didn't know if it was due to the US cutting off wheat or anything. In fact, while the US cut off economic aid during 1971, food aid was never cut off ever. However, the tradition of skipping a meal (I think it was Wednesday nights) was definitely around in IIT-M tradition though a lot of new students aren't aware of the reason why. In fact, the only reason I know about this was because it was one of the questions in an inter-hostel quiz. For the record, most students don't like mess food very much anyway and everyone invariably headed out to Tarams Nair and Shawn just outside the campus. Better tasting grub and they're open 24 hours. There was also another campus legend named Quark Kutty. Remind me to tell you stories about him some other time.

2. It isn't $50 million donated. It is $5 million. Guy got the amount wrong.

3. Dean of what? IIT Deans have a title like "Dean of Students", "Dean of Academic Research" etc. There has never been simply a "Dean". Second Fart: Deans are usually profs, who've been around for a while. I haven't visited in around 8 years, but usually a prof has to be around longer than that to become a Dean of anything there. I'd never heard of this Kranti. More suspicious, this Kranti dude doesn't seem to have a title at all.

4. Based on that, I pulled up the list of current IIT M deans.http://www.iitm.ac.in/Administratio...nistration.html. Hmmm... I recognize some names there, but no Vijay Kranti

5. I call Bull$hit on this. Maybe there is a Vijay Kranti around somewhere, but he definitely isn't an IIT dean (or perhaps an IITian either).
