Fresh Start

He held her hand and drew closer. “I’m falling in love with you, Riya.. I know it’s hard for you and you need more time. I know you still have feelings for him.. I can wait. Do you think you can give us a chance?“.

She was speechless. With wet eyes she looked up into his, unable to say anything. He knew she needed him. They understood each other in the silence.

They had met at a Read Meet a couple of months ago. She, an exuberant charming woman of the media world in her mid 2o’s; he, a reserved shy man of the corporate world in his late 20’s. Even with his shyness, he had a way with words and there was this spark about him that got her to notice him while he was sitting in a corner talking to Sam, his friend and colleague at work; who was also hosting the Meet that night. She went up to him and introduced herself. She had never seen him before. “Was he new in town?”, she thought to herself. He told her he had shifted base to Delhi to supervise the start up of his company’s new project in the city. He sensed a sad calmness under her exuberance. Her eyes belied her outgoing demeanor. He was instantly drawn to her. It was as if some unknown forces were working to pull them closer.

Months had passed since their first meeting. They had come to understand each other since like they had known each other for ages. At times there was no need of words to say what the other was thinking. Tonight he told her what she already knew. She hugged him tight, not wanting to let go and quietly wept in his arms. His hand stroked her dark hair as he kissed her slowly on her head. “Its ok, sweets”, he said softly. “We are here and together and things are going to be just fine. We’ll work on it. I promise” It was her promise that he needed more than anything but he didn’t want to put any conditions on the relationship. He wanted to give it space to take shape on its own. He wanted to give her the comfort she needed to feel free, yet attached in his love. She was too precious for him to love conditionally.

She woke up with a start. Her mind was in a haze. Slowly, the images of last night started coming back to her. Before she knew she was smiling to herself. How lucky she was to have such a man as Neil in her life! She felt special and beautiful, all owing to him. She wanted to make him happy, give him everything he deserved. Before drifting off to sleep in his arms the previous night she had made this promise to herself that she will not let her past shadow her present; her life with Neil with be a new beginning.

He had made coffee for them last night by the time she returned after freshening up. He smiled at her in his usual warm way handing her the coffee. She took the mug and sat next to him. “I don’t know how to thank you for being so understanding”, she said staring at the handle of her mug. He smiled at her and said, ”Well, you can make me that sketch you promised on my Birthday!”. They chuckled in the bliss of their own universe. They seemed to have reversed there temperaments during their being together. He had been the outgoing one who opened up to her, giving her the comfort she needed in the relationship. He never asked her anything. This made her want to come out of her shell and talk, for the first time, about the things that meant the most to her; her dreams; her passions. They shared such intimate long conversations that left them both feeling content, and their relationship grew to be more than meaningful.

He had reached for her in the light of her drawing room lamp and pulled her slowly towards himself, never taking his eyes off hers. She could see the honesty in his eyes. His love was almost palpable. She let him get closer still and closed her eyes as his lips brushed hers. They overjoyed in the warmth of their breaths and in their heightened senses. In raging passion, their tongues twisted and swirled and they kissed long and deep…

She woke up with him still sleeping by her side. There was a slight smile on his lips and his chest was heaving lightly in tune with his calm breathing. She lovingly gave him a peck on his neck and got out of bed to brew up some morning coffee.

Their world was just perfect.

Wishing Riya and Neil a peaceful and harmonious togetherness. Fact or fiction Udita ma'm? Why not try blog writing. Cool thoughts...keep it up !

hey udita good start ....
but r u open to a little critical analysis of ur work ???

i m a voracious reader and wud like to put in some comments which i feel will be shared by most readers

great start

Hey Tulip,

Great start. It's always difficult to put your work out in the open for criticism. But as you said, constructive criticism is always welcome.

So here goes....

the biggest shortcoming that your story has is that of a narrative structure. It has a definitve begginning and a fairly good end, but the problem lies in the middle. you have'nt elaborated the characters enough to understand their struggles. One would want to know that how it feels to be out of love. to be jilted in love. Why we fall out of love. And once we fall out of it, how it becomes difficult or easy to trust others.
Right now I feel for the girl and boy. But not enough to empathise for either. In a story usually one character is mapped. It looks like the girl is deciding to move on with her life. Not bring the past in the present relationship. In a way, a new start. One would like to know the inciting incident for that decision. Is it the gesture of making coffee that symbolises unconditional, selfless love?

Add some more meat. It pulls me in instantly because of its topic and characters(shy guy, girl approaching guy) but leaves me hanging.

does that help in any way? Or is it fart?

the secret is if too many people are pointing in one direction, then you will find a thread.

great start. Hopefully will encourage others interested in reading/writing to share it here.

Good: Keep it Up

A very good start Udita. Keep it up.

As far as developing the characters is concerned, I guess it is too small a text to develop characters more than what has already been done. An excellent attempt.

LOL! Dev, its definitely fiction :) I already have a poetry blog. Am not so sure about blogging anything other than poetry as of now. Thanks!

Sure, Vandana!

Please do tell me what you think. Thats why I put it up here. Your critical analysis is welcome :)

Hi Sumeet,

Thank you for the insightful analysis :) Yes, the characters need to be explored more in order to make them more appealing to the reader. Shall try to overcome this flaw whenever I write henceforth.

Every reader understands and perceives any piece of writing in a very different way than the writer of that piece. It is important for me, as a writer of this story, to see with the eyes of the readers what I missed while writing it. It helped a lot! :)

thanks!

Well, I lack confidence big time in sharing my poetry. I blog with a nom de plume. Its with the intention of developing some confidence that I'm posting stuff here whenever I can. Needless to say, the feedback is important.

As for the ragnis: Unfortunately, I dont have that kind of fluency in Haryanvi to be able to write Ragnis. Anyways, thanks for dropping by to leave a comment! :)

Udita, I don’t think I am qualified enough to evaluate or critique this kind of literary work; so, I will give my candid opinion as a general reader…..take it for whatever it is worth.

You have very lucidly described the faith & confidence Riya and Neil are starting to have in each other via the expression - “She hugged him tight…quietly wept in his arms…..he kissed her slowly on her head”.

But thereafter the story seems to have moved at too scorching a pace for the reader to believe in the sincerity of their relationship. IMHO, for such a short story, one sentence was too strong to ignore, which eventually forced me to think whether such explicity stole the rest of the story’s thunder, thus pushing the sincerity of the relationship to the background.

Beautifully written, otherwise!!! Congratulations!!!

Best Wishes

Thanks :)

Hi Kapoor,

Feels strange to address you with a surname.. anyways, thank you for the comment. Point taken, I shall keep it in mind not to rush in that level of intimacy without prior plot and work. Its always good to know readers' honest opinions :)

But thereafter the story seems to have moved at too scorching a pace for the reader to believe in the sincerity of their relationship. For example, usage of the sentence “In raging passion, their tongues …” so early on in the story evokes the impression more of a one-night stand, which certainly does not seem to be their intention. IMHO, for such a short story, the sentence was too strong to ignore, which eventually forced me to think whether such explicit description stole the rest of the story’s thunder, thus pushing the sincerity of the relationship to the background.

Good Effort

Any start is good start . Just work a bit more on sensory symbolism..to lend realism to the characters and their actions .
Keep the good work going .
