The country pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi every year on this day (also to Shastri but he is relegated to the background). However, it is seen that jats are not very enthusiastic about him. Rather there is a sense of hate about Gandhi in most of the jats. While talking to some fellow jats, I came across some interesting comments which I thought I should share with you all :

1. A friend, on my saying that Gandhi got independence to India through his ahinsa, was prompt in saying "issa tha tai South African kyun na Azad kara diya ? On ahinsa he said : Ahinsa na karta to ke kar leta, koi ek thappad dhar deta to mar jata, darpok tha ?

2. Another friend on his sadgi went even a step ahead and said : "kisi sadgi, aapni bahu nai tai maa kahan lag gya tha aur doosri chhoriya gailan haanda karta ? Issa sada tha tai Birla ke ghar main kyun mara, kisi asharam main marta....

3. On his harijan philosophy someone said, yeh isse harijan, harijan kah kai chadhaye mhare balka ne to naukari milni mushal hogi..

4. Another humourous reaction from a totally illiterate jat bhai was : kissa mahatma, na kade amerika gaya na kade Haryane main aaya !!!!!

dear r.k. thanks for this topic.

On 2 October Entire India Celebrate Gandhi Jyanti and Shastri Jyanti. Gandhi ji contribution in India's Independence Movement has unforgettable and memorable. He is still alive in our memory. His views appreciated by whole world. On the basis of his contribution this country gave him the position of National Father. Today we cannot imagine the success of India's National Movement without Contribution of Gandhi ji. Before the Gandhi ji no anybody has courage to speak against British Empire. Gandhi ji was the first person that who draw government attention towards the measurable condition of people and wake up the people voice against British Empire. So that people began to thing against that cruel empire and gathered under a Flag. It is a because of Gandhi ji achievement that his entire time called GANDI YOUGH. I am sure that if Gandhi ji were alive today, they really do something for improve the current condition. Here I am not going to describe his achievement

But it is really regrettable that today's generation does not follow the path of Gandhi ji. They also forget his contribution in National Movement. Some people says that Gandiji nothing do for India but meanwhile they forget what they did for his country and what they are going to do.

I want to do discuss on same topic letter but now I am only want to say that before going to criticize Gandhi ji contribution and his concept of life you have to check him first and analysis that what u did or do for your country.

Dear Mukesh,

I did not question what Gandhi stood for or did for the country. My emphasis was on Gandhi's impact on our own community, which you will appreciate is negligible. Jats were and still are more closer to Subhash Chandra Bose, who had defeated Gandhi even in Congress comprehensively. But the question is why we followed what Subhash said and not Gandhi? The main reason is agression inherent among jats. We could not agree with his principles of non-violence and self-inflicted pain, i.e. fast unto death and all kinds of nonsense. Now his own family members have started criticizing him for having neglected his own sons' welfare. Sarojini Naidu had rightly described that "it takes a lot of money to maintain this fakir". Even after his death our government is spending crores to maintain his legacy. He died in the then richest man of India's house and in death occupying prime land costing billions, just think of the money were are spending to maintain him even in his dealth. Can a poor country like ours afford to do this? If you observe closely what he stood for, he did more harm to the country than good for which mine, your and the coming generations will have to suffer. He was just a hypocrite. Nothing more, nothing less. My dear the very word "jat" is antonym to "gandhi". I am sure nobody can name five prominent jat Gandhians. Could someone ?

We feel more close to Netaji because we belong to a martial race and for centuries our ancestors have been fighting. But if we look back then we will find that there was a similar leader for Burma named Aung San Suu Kyi who was a part of 20 member team that went to Japan for military training. Later he came back along with invading Japanese force and helped them in gaining control of Burma. Later on the same leader Aung San Suu Kyi had god disillusioned from Japanies leadership and helped Britishers in recapturing Burma. Netaji also formed INA in Japan and fought for our independence. What would have happened if Japanese were successful in capturing India is not very clear but their past record in Burma was not favorable. As far as criticism of Gandhi is concerned it is usually done by those who don’t understand his philosophy properly. Little knowledge is dangerous thing. Netaji was able to defeat Gandhi’s candidate is true but why then he gave up his president ship? When Gandhi came back from South Africa at that time Congress was a party of rich and were totally separated from the masses. They talked about complete Swaraj but did not understand for whom this Swaraj is meant for. It was Gandhi who connected common people to congress and congress became such a big force. He was not an opportunistic politician; his ideas were based on some principles similar to a simple Jat. When Chouri chora incident happened, he had moral courage to withdraw the whole non cooperation movement risking his political career. At that time everyone including Netaji said that his political career is over. But he remained a major force till his death. There is no doubt that the kind of leaders we got after independence were very honest and hardworking. It is because of these gandhian leaders, who followed Gandhi blindly at the time of independence, we are largest and most successful democracy in the world.
To know more about gandhi there are several books, like "my experiments with truth", “Satyagraha in South Africa" both my Gandhi. My favorite one is " Freedom at midnight" by Larry Collins, Dominique Lapierre. I think everyone should read this book to know how we got our independence and why partition happened.

Sehrawat ji,

Please pardon my saying, not understanding Greek does not mean that there is no greek language. Gandhi ji does not need certificate of greatness by having five Jat Gandhians. Gandhi never told his followers to spend millions on his legacy. His legacy is so large, that even billions are a small sum to keep it alive. A nation which can not keep alive the legacy of its great sons, can at best be a worthless nation. Gandhi knew that patience only can win India feedom and he proved it. All those who went for rapid methods, failed badly. Northern Ireland, Kashmir and North East are fighting with bullets, have they won what they want? How many countries can you name in modern world who won freedom purely by weapons? Let us not condem a great soul like Gandhi by our simplistic views. He was too great a man Indian has produced in last 1000 years. Truely a man of mellinium..

Now on slightly lighter side of your post. Why just 5 jat Gandhians, I can not thin k of even 5 Jats who were Great patelites or Boseans..Do jats ever follow anyone for that matter ????

little correction in my previous message, it is Aung San not Aung San Suu Kyi who went to war in burma during second world war. Aung San Suu Kyi is a Nobel laureate (for peace) and daughter of this greate leader Aung San of burma. sorry for the mistake.

Thankyou Rajendrji for your appropriate answer. i am also waiting your answer on this question (5 gandhian jat).
You are absolutly wtite that Gandhi ji does not need certificate of greatness by having five Jat Gandhians. But i don't no why people criticize gandhiji.
British Government has falled in problem from a man in whole india and this main is Gandhiji.
Our naional movement become first and big weapon and blood less movement due to policiy or views of gandiji.
so please stop to criticize him.

by the way India is a democratic country and any body have a right to speek anything.

...Exactly!!! It is a Democratic Country and therefore refrain from telling anyone to stop praising or criticizing any public figure! Period!

When talking about Gandhi we have to be clear in our minds as to at what point was His a contribution and at what crucial juncture it turned out as a great disservice to the Nation!!!

I am sure no one wants to (or can) take away from Gandhi his stead fast dedication on the freedom movement. Yes, I think we all agree he does not any certificate from any present, living or dead individual...but let me ask you; How can you simply fade the contribution of the other various great heroes of the Indian freedom movement struggle that not only supported HIM but provided the backdrop for his policies and carried them out with utter dedication to the motherland and in the various other parts of the Country? And then what about the lakhs of citizens that followed him and stuck to his ideals throughout? [The actual real reason and force which prompted the British into getting cold feet?] How can one just place the complete credit on his shoulders alone?...Are you so naive to think it would have been possible with just him alone?

But in any case, having said that; let's move on to the point where the British decided to leave India....THAT is when comes the real debate that still lingers on and should be the real topic of any debate here; What happened to the 'Mahatma' after that?... How could a person who is supposed to be the true lover of a complete Bharat and the motherland decides to play pawn in the hands of the Muslim league and the ever conniving British? Do you think most of his brain cells died earlier while still being on that hunger strike against the British?!!...That lack of effectiveness (immediately after being so utterly effective) in a nutshell WAS and IS the unacceptable part and so be warned against playing on the emotional and sentimental card about the 'Mahatma' crap when we all know he bended under the internal politics (and where the convenient excuse of Gandhi being above all that is nothing short of being lame!)
He was and shall be held responsible for not being effective when the Nation was looking at him most to deliver from the Chaos resulting from a possible divided Nation.

Why can't we except the difference between the great 'Mahatma' Gandhi of the Freedom Movement and the backbone less Gandhi of the great Indian sub-continent partition?

Rajendraji,

You must have heard the saying "Totte ka nam Gandhi". Let us not waste our billions on tottee legacy, whose own sons and grand sons don't see eye to eye with him. I remain steadfast that he had minimal or no effect at all on our community rather there is a undercurrent of hate for him. When I say this, I mean average jats and not elite jats like you or Shri Mukesh Kumar. I am of the firm view that the maximum damage to our country has been done by these so called Mahatmas. They have reduced Indians to the level of cowardice. Btw how many jats will offer their left cheek if they are slapped on the right.

Yes to a great extent I agree with you Shailendra. May be Gandhi was not so good in dealing with his own childern whether they were biological or political. He could not handle the 'jid' of Nehru and Jinnah. He tried his best to soften them, but failed. Things drifted so badly that partition became almosy inevitable. However, his greatness was far too larger than his weakness. Weakness was not intentional, but probably a trait of his personality. He was too soft with childern always and that resulted in somewhat spoiled kids..

Sehrawat ji,

If one looks at the history of India from Prathvi Raj Chauhan onwards, there were hardly any hindu rulars worth who could become role models either for jats or others. This is how Muslims came and ruled India. When East India company was going all over India and anexing state by state, there were hardly figure heads who could unite India for a joint fight. We all know how the first freedom strugle of 1857 failed. There was then total lull for almost 70 years except a voice here and there. Probably first noticable voice after 1857 came that of Lok Manya Tilak who was more of a Maharastrain leader and could not become all India freedom leader. Gandhi was the only person who truely united masses under one flag and fought relentlessly to gain freedom.

As far as Jats are concerned, they have rarely been in the mainstream of nation and mainly being rural based, they were far away from the scene of action. Jats by enlrage have been respectful to Gandhi, barring younger generation now who beleive in the culture of ereything fast, be it food or anything. I have met lots of old people in villages who were strong followers of congress and Gandhi for that matter. At any time the number of Jat leaders in congress has been far more than in any other party..except that many left it after Mrs Gandhi took control of it. Jats were never communists, and even today they are not of that ideaology. Coming closer to BJP is a very recent phenomenon. Blaming Gandhi for all the ills of India will be a bit too much really..May be he did not leave behind capable childern...which I will surely agree with you or anyone..

I think the reason for this was Gandhi followed all peaceful methods, just sitting and addressing the crowd. Indians, were/are cowards, majority of them want to remain away from disputes, thats y gandhi was so popular, well if some one tell an ordinary indian to just go there and sit and attend the speech, i would gladly go there, but if one tells him to go and fight, majority will abstain. they were united because they have nothing to loose. no charisma of gandhi, just the nature of indians..

apparenlty gandhi's grandson went to palenstine last month to persuade those guys to use gandhi's no-violence approach, only fools will think that that approach is going to work anywhere anytime.

Gandhi was the only person who truely united masses under one flag and fought relentlessly to gain freedom.
