Clerics issue fatwa against coming down from hilltops

* State minister says 50,000 Allai survivors could freeze to death

By Iqbal Khattak

BALAKOT: Clerics in Allai area of Battagram have reportedly issued a fatwa forbidding people from descending the hilltop and a federal minister on Tuesday warned that 50,000 people or more in the Allai area could die if they do not come down.

The people of Allai have so far not descended from the hilltop and their reluctance largely stems from a reported fatwa by some local clerics that it was un-Islamic to flee from a disaster zone. Another reason for people refusing to come down to live in the tent villages in the valley was the fear of local politicians that they might lose potential voters if the people decided to quit the area for good.

“The lives of 40,000 to 50,000 people are at stake. They will freeze to death if they continue to stay on the hilltop,” said Engineer Amir Muqqam, the state minister for water and power, while talking to Daily Times after visiting the earthquake areas to review the ongoing relief operations in Balakot. Bad weather interrupted the helicopter visit of the minister, where he was scheduled to meet the quake survivors in order to persuade them to descend.

“What makes me worry most is that the Allai people are still reluctant to come down,” he said. “They cannot live through the harsh cold weather in the donated tents,” the minister said.

“There is a lot of negative propaganda in the area,” Muqqam said. The minister said that he had made all efforts to allay the fears of the people but he was only partially successful in his efforts.

Woman to pay alimony to unemployed spouse

Indo-Asian News Service

Bhubaneswar, November 12, 2005

February 4, 2005: HC rules Muslim women entitled for maintenance »

It's almost unheard of in India. A court in Orissa has ordered a working woman to pay alimony to her estranged husband who is unemployed.

Subhendu Sarangi, a resident of Lingipur village near here, married Jyotsna Dash, who works as teacher at a private school, in March 2001.

Due to differences between the couple, Jyotsna went to her parents' house after three months of marriage and stayed there after that.

Subhendu then applied for divorce, seeking alimony of Rs 500, his lawyer Harapriya Samantray said. Subhendu argued that he was jobless and could not meet the court expenses.

And in a landmark ruling, civil judge BK Mohanty gave an interim order favouring Subhendu and asked his wife to pay a monthly maintenance of Rs 500.

"This will help me to fight the case," a happy Subhendu said. "Normally, courts favour the woman in alimony cases. I am happy that the court has remained unbiased in this case."

The Hindu marriage act treats both men and women equally. When a woman can demand compensation from her husband, a man too can demand compensation from his working wife, the lawyer said. But very few men demand that, she said.

This direction is likely to bring respite to unemployed men fighting divorce cases, said another senior lawyer.

But the court direction has invited criticism from the state's leading women activists. "The court judgment is gender-biased," said state women's commission member Namrata Chaddha.

The women's commission has announced legal help for Jyotsna so she can go to a higher court for justice. But she wants to end the battle, saying she wants to return to her in-law's place.

Uttar Pradesh cop turns 'divine'

LUCKNOW: A senior Uttar Pradesh police official has declared himself to be a re-incarnation of Radha, Hindu god Krishna's companion.

Barring occasions when he is required to don the official uniform, Devendra Kumar Panda, a 1971 batch officer of the elite Indian Police Service (IPS), drapes himself in a female attire.

He wears lipstick and a nose ring, paints his finger and toe nails with red varnish and keeps dancing around, singing hymns in praise of Lord Krishna .

"Lord Krishna has Himself assigned me the role of Radha and whatever I am doing was in pursuance of His wishes", Panda saids.

While he claims to have attained divinity in 2003, Panda appears to have become obsessive about it over the past seven months or so.

It was none other than his wife, Veena, who chose to make it public after the IPS officer decided to turn her out of his official bungalow as her presence was an obstacle for him in his religious pursuits.

She also approached the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court, which directed Panda to pay a monthly maintenance of Rs.7000 ($150) to her in its order issued Thursday and made public Saturday.

Dear Rajindra Ji,
That is so frustrating. I feel the Clerics should be asked to be part and parcel of the community and should live with them under those conditions. They should not be allowed to pass any Fatwa unless they themselves do the same thing what they expect the community to do. And if they don't do that, then they should be prosecuted and convicted of the crime of making a larger population suffer and possibly die.

Dear Rajendra Ji,

I read that article too. He should be asked to resign his post and concentrate on his new role. We probably may not like to have him at helm of affairs, although considering the thinking of our society, he might get job done better for people may start thinking that he is God, and even may start worshiping him. He might also start making money who knows.

Ants eat away woman's eye in India

Ants eat away woman's eye in India

www.chinaview.cn 2005-11-17 11:07:43

BEIJING, Nov. 17 -- A woman receiving treatment for diabetes at a state-run hospital in eastern India lost one of her eyes after ants nibbled away at it, officials said on Tuesday.

The patient recovering from a post-surgery infection shrieked for help as the ants attacked her on Sunday night, but nurses told her it was normal to feel pain from the infection.

On Monday, the patient's family saw a gaping hole with swarming ants in it when they lifted the bandage on her left eye.

Authorities of the Sambhunath Hospital in Kolkata said they were probing the incident.

"It's not uncommon for ants to attack diabetic patients. We have set up a committee to investigate the unfortunate incident," hospital superintendent A. Adhikary said.

Scampering rats and stray cats and dogs sharing bed space with patients are not uncommon sights at India's overcrowded state-run hospitals that are used by millions of poor and middle-class people.

Aisa Hi Hota Hai...

RK Ji,

In this continental sized country what else can happen?

In my view the 'Fatwa' is correct. In fact he missed out on a very important thing. The Cleric should have asked survivers who came down to relief camps to rush to the mountain tops. That many less terrorists to deal with... (Thelast sentence is the view of counter terrorist experts)

Vo IG Saheb jo Radha bane hue hai, kal ek apni beti ki umar ki ladki ke saath ek five star hotel mein 'pooja' kar rahe thay Puri main....

Hamare hospitals are the most happening places and truly believe in 'Atithi Devo Bhava', phir chahe mareej ho ya Kuatta/Billi/Chooha, all are welcome...

Aise he hoga jab tak ye population control nahin hotee....

Regards,

JS Malik

How to get rid of one's wife/husband

The Price of Insanity

A greedy and corrupt government psychiatrist whose job it is to heal patients at Agra’s mental asylum, is caught colluding with heartless husbands who want to dump their wives. He charges a mere Rs 5,000 to certify poor, disempowered women mentally ill and testifies to his own falsehoods in court. JAMSHED KHAN rips the cover off a sordid saga

Rupees Five Thousand. That’s all it takes to declare normal women mentally ill. That’s all it takes to dump wives. The bucks go a long way in destroying the lives of poor, powerless women. Women who have no chance in hell of fighting back. Women who fall prey to a silent and sickening conspiracy hatched by their husbands with the connivance of a senior government doctor. A psychologist, mind you, not some quack. A doctor who is supposed to heal and soothe, a doctor who is supposed to help mentally ill patients rejoin their families.
At the centre of this sordid saga is Dr SK Gupta, senior psychologist at the Agra mental hospital. Kingpin? Pimp? What should one call him? He gleefully pockets money, confidently puts his stamp on false certificates and then even goes to court to once again testify to his own falsehoods. His ‘fame’ seems to have travelled. By his own admission, he claims to have “successfully helped” ten men dump their wives. Sometimes husbands come to him. Sometimes he seeks them out. Tehelka managed to meet him within a day of trying. He’s available, ever ready to pocket the bucks.
Take 32-year-old Rajni and her husband, sorry ex-husband, Rakesh Sharma. A driver on the Agra-Mathura route, Rakesh met Dr Gupta because he once travelled in his vehicle. He asked him why he looked troubled and then offered to help him. “I’ll find a solution for your tension, come and see me at home,” he said. A few days later, Rakesh paid him a visit and the conspiracy was hatched behind closed doors. Rakesh wanted to get out of his marriage and Dr Gupta, well, he had found another prey. He explained the procedure to Rakesh: he would stamp a certificate on his letterhead. The certificate would read, “Rajni is taking treatment for schizophrenic form psychosis (mental disorder) and has been under my observation for over two months.” The ‘mental disorder’ would help Rakesh fight a divorce case. The doctor then also told him that it would involve Rs 5,000 and asked Rakesh if he would pay.
He did and Rajni was dumped. Rajni was divorced on the basis of a non-existent ‘mental disorder’. Dr Gupta had not once glanced at her, or examined her. She is now back home. Her mama’s (maternal uncle) house is what she now calls home. Her parents are dead and she has no siblings. “I don’t know how many lives he has ruined; I want him brought to book,” says Rajni, about Dr Gupta. Sitting in a lower middle-class, two-room house in a UP town, she says that she couldn’t afford to even appeal for a medical re-examination. Her trauma is evident in her own words. “Meri koi badnami to nahi hogi?” (People won’t cast aspersions on me, will they?) As for her husband Rakesh, well, this is what he had to say when Tehelka caught up with him, “What could her family do when I had got her certified mad. What objection could they have raised?”
Rakesh sings like a bird when told that we want to procure a similar certificate. He tells us how he bribed Dr SK Gupta. How he did it only because he wanted to remarry and not because there was anything wrong with his wife. (See box).
He didn’t know a camera was recording him …

MULTAN, Pakistan - A father, angry that his eldest daughter had married against his wishes, slit her throat as she slept and then killed three of his other daughters in a remote village in eastern Pakistan, police said Saturday.
Nazir Ahmad, a laborer in his 40s, feared the younger girls, aged 4, 8, and 12, would follow in their sister's footsteps, police officer Shahzad Gul said.
Ahmad surrendered to police after the killings late Friday in Burewala, about 70 miles east of Multan, a main city in eastern Punjab province, Gul said.
"He (Ahmad) told us today that he has killed his daughters, and we arrested him," he said.
Gul said the man's 25-year-old daughter, Muqadas Bibi, had married the man of her choice against her father's wishes some weeks ago. Ahmad contacted Bibi this week, saying he was ready to forgive her, Gul said.
During a visit by Bibi to her parents' house, Ahmad slit her throat as she slept and then killed the other three girls, Gul said. He said police were investigating whether other relatives helped in the killings and were also looking for Bibi's husband.
Gul said police are looking for Bibi's husband to inform him of her death.
Hundreds of women are killed in Pakistan every year, many by male relatives, after they are accused of staining their families' honor by having affairs or marrying for love without family consent.

Baraatis on Hire

A BUSINESS tycoon was explaining to a young man that to succeed in life you have to jump at the right opportunity. “But how do you know the opportunity has come?”, he enquired. “You dashed well don’t know”, was the reply, “you just keep on jumping”.

One does not know whether an entrepreneur in Jodhpur had been following that precept, and if he had, how long his spell of jumping had lasted. He did, however, find that his last jump and the long-awaited opportunity had coincided very precisely. He had hit upon the highly unusual business of providing “baratis” on hire to rich families.

He had observed that many affluent families, who had recently arrived in Rajasthan, had few relatives there and even fewer acquaintances. When they had to marry off their children, they had practically no one who could form the “barat”, and a marriage without a large group of “baratis” would be a serious jolt for the family honour. Hence our new business man’s chance.

He has got hold of an array of prospective “baratis” who are not averse to making some money on the side (along, of course, with his lining his pocket much more) and rents them out for a carefully graded tariff.

At the lowest level are men wearing dhotis and kurtas. Then come those sporting shirts and trousers. Next are persons with formal suits and ties especially if they have the ability to converse in English. The creamy layer wears the traditional Rajasthani dress.

The range of the daily rent is Rs 100 and Rs 500 plus sumptuous meals. So the number of the “baratis” and their apparel can be selected to suit your budget.

Most of them are educated unemployed youth and are briefed in detail about the groom and the bride and their families to avoid any faux pas. And they are instructed to exercise special care to ensure that they do not give anyone even an inkling that they are on hire for the event.

The business has flourished well beyond the initial expectations, and indeed the prospect seems so promising that it is proposed to open branch offices in other cities of the state.

News has come from Germany of another novelty in the line of business: hotel accommodation in the branches of a 30-foot high tree. If you have grown a little tired of staying on the ground level that is just the alternative that will suit you. The rooms numbering five are wooden and are connected by narrow walkways and come with small balconies, electric lights and shared toilets. On the opening night all the rooms were fully booked at the cost of £ 100 to £ 150 a night.

So the accommodation was not exactly expansive but was obviously very popular with people who liked to have their feet off the ground for a change.

.

really sir.. it is being happened in Jaipur too.. I have read somewhere in newspaper before somedays ago...

sukar hai.. barati hi kiraye par mil rehe hai kehi aisa na hone lag gaye ki dulha and dulhan bi kiraye par lekar ane lag jaye...nothing is impossible..because it is era of globalisation....
