Every other day, one gets to read in the newspaper that a clinic running a sex determination racket is busted in some town or the other.
It is an irony that those who do it (doctors) and those who generally get it done (patients/beneficiaries) are both educated and more often than not come from well to do backgrounds/families.
Hence, it would be wrong to say that this evil can only be uprooted through education and literacy. There needs to be change in the mindset of the people.
At a personal level, I see so many among my friends and family who are having a two-son family. Nothing wrong if natural. However, this all makes one wonder if God has suddenly by chance stopped the mingling of the X chromosome with another X chromosome.
Agreed that even in today's times girls are seen more as a liability (by the parents) and commodity (by the film, fashion and advertising media). However, at the same time, one cannot ignore the present day scenario where girls have proved themselves to be equal if not ahead of boys. Examples like Sania Nehwal, IAS topper Tina Dabi, the three female (fighter) pilots who recently graduated from the AFA, etc.
All this requires a change in the mindset of the family and also of the society. The family as a unit of the society has to play a key role in changing the outlook of society by establishing an informal system of checks and balances to contain and admonish any adverse issue/incident affecting the girl or the girl child in the society.
Girls not only have to survive (both in the womb and the outside world), but also they have to flourish (or more aptly take wings) if the society has to flourish. To ensure the same, we have to raise our voice if we see anything suspicious or untoward happening in our vicinity or surroundings.
