I hope India gets more than 10 medals, it feels very sad and bad to see no gold medal for India, it feels even worst when you hear Chinese, Japanese etc talking about their medal scores around you.
I am unable to go for these olympics, but I do wish and desire to go for the Bejing 2008 Olympics.

this is the irony of india
jats who r supposedly the toughest of all indians..... r in no mood of replying to this mail.... i myself being an athlete...can feel the agony players of india suffer with..esp when ppl of their nation r so indifferent to their cause...
these players work day n night.... with almost no facilities...in sleeps too they dream of tiranga being hoisted at olympic stadia...
i wish them all a very best of luck.... i dont care the no of medals they get ... it is the participation that matters more...
anyway ... what have we indians given to them so as to expect anything from them??...

Any1 going to the olympics? I wish I could go...

..I disagree...Monies are being poured when it comes to good medal hopefuls, The old argument of no support from the government cannot be used as an excuse anymore.

In fact I was reading an article the other day where even The Indian Army had unfurled their grand plans to send athletes that would be medal sures, and that the Army would itself train and pour money (corores of it!) into them...But apparently only three barely managed to qualify alone to even get into the Indian Athen Olympics team!!!...

There are even poorer nations than India that manage to get away with Gold medal (even if one) in the Olympics,...and that should be telling enough!...

I don't think now a days money or facilities are problem for any sportsperson if he/she is a medal hope. If money were the issue then Ethiopia (Haile Gebrselassie, Gezahgne Abera) and some other African nations wouldn't have won any medal till date. At least, not before India.

Money, sponsorship etc comes with results, not by just participation. Number of people following a game also matters. But they also comes with result. I personally tries to follow anju george only after her medal at world championships. Few examples from current team like Anju George, Hockey Team. I’m talking about current scenario. There were stories about players of 70s-80s who were struggling to sustain a decent life.

Also as you said "what we Indians have given to them so as to expect anything from them??..."
First of all I’m not sure what they want from us?
But if everyone start thinking on this line, then why should anyone pay tax and think about the situation when a soldier starts thinking like this. Can anybody pay for the sacrifice they make for the country?

Even if we think in materialistic term, then as per my limited knowledge, normally all players who played at national or international level, gets a job even if they are not qualified enough for that job. They get promotions based on their performance.

"they" are saying, India is going to win 10 medals this time. How many do u think?

Pardon me but it is not the question of money or facilities but something deeper. What I am going to say should not upset anyone and if it does then I can't help because truth is indeed bitter.

How can a nation that does not have very many inventors, discoverors, adventurers, conquerers and the like get medals at world level? (Irrespective of what happened thousands of years ago when we were supposed to be pioneers in everything) We have had enough stories of 'Hindustan ek Sone ki Chidiya Thi' and 'Saare jahan se achha Hindustan hamara'. Those who were able to rule over us by feeding these stories are dead and gone. It is time we accepted the fact that we don't have a sporting culture. I was watching an interview of Kapil Dev on TV and he was asked as to why Indians don't win medals at the highest levels. He said two very pertinent things.

1. When people start buying jogging shoes after marriage.

2. When grandfathers are seen encouraging their grandchildren to run in parks and sporting facilities.

How very right he is. And the medal prospects are only likely to be from amongst two kinds of people. The members of the Armed Forces and sons and daughters of farmers.

In our country sports is still considered a waste of time or a means to get a government/private job. Being the parent of an only child who has taken up a sport as a way of life I know the obstacles one has to face from family and friends, mostly educated. And even for us it was not an easy decision to take.

Therefore let us encourage our children if they have an aptitude for sports. Who knows this JATLAND might contribute to the future Olympics Medal Tally for the country.

Regards,

JS Malik

Rathore's silver makes him richer by Rs 8 mn

IANS[ WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 18, 2004 04:47:38 PM ]

JAIPUR: Shooter Rajyavardhan Rathore's silver medal effort at the Athens Olympics will make him richer by at least Rs 8 million.

Apart from the Rs 5 million he will get from the Indian government and the Rs 1 million from electronics giant Samsung, one of the two sponsors of the Indian contingent, the Rajasthan government announced on Wednesday it would present him a cash award of Rs 1.1 million and an apartment here worth Rs 880,000.

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje announced the Rajashtan government's awards, while speaking to reporters here.

"We will also make a recommendation that Rathore be given the Arjuna Award," Raje added.

Rathore, who belongs to Rajasthan, was born in a small town near Bikaner. His parents live in Jaipur.

The Indian government had announced awards of Rs 10 million, Rs 5 million and Rs 2.5 million respectively for gold, silver and bronze medal winners at the Olympics.

Samsung will give Rs 1.5 million, Rs 1 million and Rs 500,000 to the respective medal winners.

i agree with you, naresh. it seems jats and all indians just care about bollywood, cricket and $$$$. young indians are too busy worrying about getting admission into medical, engineering. the sports-oriented indians play cricket and/or field hockey only. the problem is not only facilities but the lack of desire and importance given to olympic sports. futbol crazy countries (i.e. brazil, argentina) do not have the facilities, but are still able to compete internationally.

anyways, i wish india the best of luck.

Bad day for India.
Tennis - Paes-Bhupathi crashed out of tournament in semi-final.
Hockey - Australia beat India 4-3.

Worse
Two weightlifters tested positive for doping.

Chances of getting another medal are very dim.

Apologies in Tennis Paes-Bhupathi are out of the Gold race and not out of the tournament. They'll take on the second loser of the semi-final on Thursday.

Every passing day of Athens Another Olympics is shattering our hopes. Our tennis duo out, hockey team all set to end below 10th ranking, bronze medalist of last games, came on the podium as if to cut the ribbon and didn't lift even once, two of our female lifters found guity of doping and our throwers could not produce even a single throw without a foul, the one's who were expected to produce favourable results ended in 20s and 40s. India that is Bharat, a country of more than one billion, is jumping with joy with a single silver medal. It is a matter not of joy, but a shame. What is the remedy, should we give a chance to communists ? I think, no harm. As may be seen, with the exception of DPRK for the last 2-3 games, have been doing extremely well. The USSR used to dominate the olympics during red regime but after its disintegration. But now even the combind performance of all its 12 former republics does not come anywhere near to its glorious past. But when we look at the performance of USA, Japan and Korea, there is another option open. All the sports associations and bodies should be corporatised where no plitical appointments should be allowed.
