Aulikhara- Goth or Symbol

Thanks for positive contribution

RANA JI
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR HARD WORK AND POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION.

Aulikara- what I see is the symbol of the crescent moon, not a clan name.
Aulikara Symbol of moon can be Chandervanshi- Kula Symbol.
It also link to Shiva half moon.
It could be link to OMKARA
AULAK- AULA.
We should keep our option open

That symbol is found, I believe, on the coins of many people- Kushans, Harsh, Mukhar(is), Yashodharman( group of families), Shivji etc.

All the Risthal inscription talks about, is that the panygrist, inscriber, singing the praises ,describing PrakashDharman of having raised the

' Auilkhara Lachana' -the clan's /family's 'crest, the Aulikhara( moon symbol)' to new heights.
Wish you and our readers a very happy Dewali

Use of suffix - kara

I would like to clarify the Use of suffix - kara. In Malwa Madhya Pradesh and nearby area of Maharashtra people add kara suffix to qualify either a place or a profession. It means residents of a particular place or doers of some work. For example Rahatgaonkar is a surname which means residents of Rahatgaon. Silekar is also a surname which means those who stich clothes.

I think in Aulikara, kara is not sun or moon but it is related with word Auli. We have to find the meaning of word Auli.

regards.

Aulikara-Goth or Symbol

Symbol turns into family Name

Yes, certainly , Burdak Ji,
kar could a later day verion of the Sanskrit suffix kan (effectively, Ka) as in Ayodyaka i.e. one belonging to Ayodhya.Another meaning ,as you have said is for indicating a vocqtion. But there the last but one 'a' is long as in kumbhakAra later day kumhar). The third (I would say the principal sense of the second mamber Kara (of Aulikara) is ray. Aulikara could have been a person from the place called 'Auli' (if there was any). But the use of the term 'kara' in the compound word 'Aulikara- lanchhana' clearly shows thar it was some symbol of an object having raysi.e. either the moon or thwe Sun. So Dudee is not far from the correct surmise. But the symbol need not have remained restricted in use mwerely as a symbol on the seals or flag etc. It perhaps assumed also the role of a term for the family name by it is seen to have gained fame.

...pointed out the gotra of the Gupta family was dhAraNa.We have it mentioned as the gotra of PrabhavatI GuptA, daughter of Chandragupta-II in the he 7 th line of the Rithpur Copper Plate Inscription of PrabhavatI GuptA- …Chandraguptasya duhitA dhArana-sagotrA …..

It seems then that the daughter retained her father's gotra name. Is it known whether she was married?

Aulikara-Goth or Symbol

PrabhAvatIguptA

Urmila ji,

PrabhAvatIguptA was married to the Valataka king Rudrasena-II. She had two minor sons, Damodarasena and Pravarasena when her husband died. She, being the senior queen(agramahishi), managed the kingdom as regent. The mention of her parental gotra in the inscription concerned probably, underlines her high connection. We are aware of the custom of similar nature in differentiating queens in a polygamous royalty. This can be noticed even today in rural communities like the Jats when we find the wives of several brotherrs in a joint family being idebtified either by their parental village names( mostly) or gotra name.
