BBC Documentary - India's Daughter

I like these comments:

“It is good that this film was made, it will reveal how many men think like Nirbhaya's rapist,” Javed Akhtar asserted.

“I conceive who gave the permission but the reality is what the man spoke reflects views of many men in India. Why we are shying about it? We are not confronting the issues. Suggesting death penalty is not the answer. We have to confront the issue that many men in India do not respect women. Every time a rape happens, the victim is blamed to have provoked the men. Let’s be aware of the view and not pretend all is well,” Anu Aga said.

There is nothing wrong in the documentary that demands a ban. What has been shown are all facts; and that it!

People are free to drive different conclusions from those facts.

Everyone knows that no society is entirely made up of rapists and criminals. Also, it's a fact that the kind of gruesome criminality in the act was a product of a society rather than a biological disorder.

The documentary isn't aimed at defaming India, there is no logic in these accusations. There are lots and lots of western movies/documentaries which have shown the darkside of western society too.

I saw the documentary yesterday and I think it should be made compulsory watching in high schools and colleges across the country, especially in North India. The statements and views of the convicted, the defense lawyers and others should be debated and discussed by students led by their tutors. And it should be the responsibility of the tutors to help students and the youth understand flawed beliefs of supremacy, honour and a girl's standing in society. Our syllabus are full of deeds of various great men and women from which we are told to take lesson and whose example we are asked to follow. Let the girl's life and fight with the rapists, be at the losing end as it was, be an example of others to follow.

Lets not brush it under the carpet. lets accept and learn from it. Otherwise we will have countless more Nirbhayas and are still continuing to have beyond our attention. Only when we document, discuss, debate and reflect do we imbibe and change. Media - films/documentary, articles, letters are a tremendous instrument of bringing about that change via documentation.
Let's not make these criminals as heros. By showing them to young minds, it could have it's own share of negitive impacts.

The statements of defense lawyers was no more than a professional skewed effort to defend their clients. They have to come up with something to defend them and justify their fees. Sometimes, when students have no hope in doing better at any steam, they take up LLB and end up just like these lawyers.

Bhai, that is why I said, it needs to be better discussed and debated in a classroom setting along with a tutor. The point here is to educate the young minds and for that negative thoughts and words can be as useful as positive ones.

Maybe its a wrong analogy, but Germany has preserved its WWII Nazi era concentration camps with all the grim details as reminders for future generations. They could have chosen to bulldoze them away but they are now tourist sites for people to learn and educate themselves. Sure, some will identify with the perpetrators - the rapists, but most will understand what not to do.

That is surely a reason as well. But if we are honest, we know that many men too have the same attitude. Even politicians have made similar statements in the past.

Let me be the devil’s advocate as i speak on behalf of the government...

thank you members on picking up the debate. some very sane views that also reflects the variety in every individual’s stand and point of view… given the further length of discussion we might agree to disagree on most of the points raised so far.

i’ve been holding on to my views until now. let me put forward my stand that gives one side (<<< Please note) of the perspective and for that i’ve to be the devil’s advocate as i speak on behalf of the government.

nirbhaya poverty porn is an orchestrated hit job, that feeds on competitive victimhood, and self-flagellation of colonial mindset. if mukesh were a white man in a white man's jail, the lawyers and jailors would do their duty and deny the petition to access the rapist before his trial is complete. do you think bbc would have aired the documentary, discussing the factual circumstances of the case while his appeal was still pending? when western countries try to discuss india related issues, it is important that they express not just the issue, but also the context behind it and the process that is involved. these parameters often change when it comes to brown people. govt. of india aired grave reservations… and the reservation was? india's reputation is at stake, and the loss in the revenue following the expected decline of indian tourism… not the accuracy of the content, not the legal rights of the victim, not the legal rights of even the criminal… or is it the other way round?

this seems like an international media thriller, very difficult to comprehend the hidden agenda. for sure i’ve some ideas on this hidden agenda but would like to come on later to that point.

i agree to above to a certain extent.

the documentary tries to portray the whole indian society as evil by selectively showing sensational bits (unless i'm terribly wrong). though the video may not represent mindset of majority of indians in terms of respect towards women, however the incident does expose the slave mentality of various people coming in support of BBC. unintentionally, this also exposes the preaching mindset of english people. however, it is ironical that more educated a person becomes more attracted he seems to be towards colonial mindset. this isn't a isolated documentary. it is a women's day campaign that was advanced, because the entire world is conspiring against india (pun inteded). lauding BBC for showing a mirror to India, via this video of an interview of a rapist and death convict?...
ManjeetS are you sure?

p.s.: the views expressed above may or may not represent my opinion. the reply above is intended to get more ideas on the subject matter and on the related aspects.

Of course. Listen that guy, I am 100% disagree with that guy. When people see rape in any movie they enjoy it why they don't Boycott it. Then why for a documentary

It's not about Indian mindset or Western mindset. Ye ek Bimari hai

I watched a Movie 12 year a slave. It shows the mindset of Western. It is also one kind of Documentary. Even Western People loved it.

My second perspective... face it with a pinch of salt.

even if the documentary is biased, bigoted and perpetuates some stereotypes, banning it is a knuckle headed response by the govt, which only lends it more credibility and shows india as a nation not ready to stand up to the criticism or freedom of expression… agree? at least i do, so let me join javed akhter and shout at the top of my lungs “achha hua kii documentary bani, ab pata chalega kitne log hain jo us rapist jaise soch rakhtey hain”… for sure, i stand by him.

i’ve claimed in my opening post that we are the most intolerant and biggest hypocrites on the planet earth. we feel as if it is our ‘janm sidh adhikar’ to abuse and fight with people who tell us of our shortcomings. c’mon folks let’s admit that we have a problem, the problem of our contrived view against women and their freedom. to make the matter worse, we’ve our draconian legislation and medieval mindset that has huge potential for injustice. we just won’t let anyone comment on our shortcomings. banning the film or bringing up questions as to how the film-maker was allowed to interview the rapist etc cannot take away from the core issue that rape is a stark reality in india, that needs to be confronted. we cannot justify the brewing of dirty attitudes that we harbour in our mindset as demonstrated by those two muck headed lawyers.

now to complete the psychobabble about mukesh the death row inmate's delusions. he is a sociopath who believes his own version of truth. but what were the rapists lawyer smoking? they were under no pressure of imminent death noose and expressed exactly the same asinine ideas about how women should behave. some say that they too should be hanged to death… are you serious? everyone has a point of view. no matter how sick, we should not be afraid to hear it... it tells you what the caretakers of the law in india stand for. i’m ashamed that such morons are our law keepers. imagine if one of those rise in ranks and become a judge?

bbc documentary might have failed us in so many aspects, nevertheless it is a milestone as it still exposes the indian society and its hypocrisy in dealing with the issue at the same time reiterating the fact that the gender sensitivity, rape, gets the serious treatment it deserves… face it with a pinch of salt.

The instant case shows the urgent need of revision of existing Acts/rules that deal with such atrocious actions !

The least BJP could have done was to expose the identity of this savage juvenile Mohd. Afroz. Had this juvenile belonged to a different religion, they might have done it...though cannot say for sure. But, the moment any political party comes in play, it will always say, we are not doing politics & yet do the same. AAP could have kept away, but then again the crybaby needed attention. I do hope there is some vigilante justice in this case. No clue where all the mombatti gang is hiding.
