Additional to above mentioned sites/papers; www.samachar.com is good one, it has headline news from various Indian papers.

From UK editions; Sun, Guardian, Independent & Telegraph are not bad, obviously include BBC too.

Never followed any UK papers apart from The FT, maybe because of my lack of interest in the local news.

You are absolutely correct; let others say or think as they wish.

Hindustan Times is also more or less balanced newspaper. Its Political Editor Vinod Sharma is a very good commentator and mature journalist. Among other native journos, Vinod Dua of Outlook and Shekhar Gupta of Indian Express are upright journalists. Barkha Dutt of NDTV has become a little arrogant and dubious nowadays because of her high profile connections and the increasing TRP of the channel. As Dr. Rajpal Singh has already observed, Editorial of Tribune has some standard. As far as day to day reporting of actual happenings is concerned, all the newspapers borrow the news from various agencies like PTI, Reuter, IANS, Samachar etc. Therefore, the gist of the news is the same. The only difference is a slight change in the mode of presentation. Having said that, I would suggest that the readers should always analyze the editorials with a little cynicism because most of the newspapers have biased views which are determined by the individual political leaning of the management and the Editor himself. Also, the opinions are influenced by the amount of donations or quantum of favour given to a particular group by a particular political party or the vested interests to earn its loyalty, political tilt and sufficient space on the first page. As media is the most effective and appealing means of mass communication, those media groups that become popular with the passage of time acquire saleability and indulge in bargaining with the rich politico-business mafia. As on today, most of them are hand in glove with the affluent sections of society and the brokers of political power. Revelations of Barkha Dutt and Vir Sanghi's names in the Nira Radia Case is a testimony to it.

As far as international tabloids and journalists are concerned, the list is very long. One can choose any newspaper according to one's taste. For those having interest in world economy, Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) is a very good monthly publication. For those keeping track of global political developments, Time and Newsweek are good magazines. Similarly, there are many good newspapers as well viz. New York Times, Telegraph,Guardian,Herald Tribune, Le Monde and many more but, the problem is who has the time to read so much stuff. Therefore, one has to be very selective and precise in reading the newspapers, magazines and books as most of the editorials, commentaries and book collections are summaries of individual opinions which may not be universally applicable and, hence, may not be in consonance with your own views.

If one wants to keep himself/herself abreast of the news of one's own village/area, Dainik Jagran is the best. It covers all the happenings in each and every street of almost every village on daily basis. For example :

Vinod Sharma to me seems like a government agent. Barkha Dutt is a bit over the top and hogs limelight on her own shows. Unfortunately, I don't have any other choice apart from NDTV here for Indian news.

Agree on this. I have seen Vinod Sharma on ndtv and he looks completely pro-govt.

Barkha Dutt, she doesn't even let the guests talk, self-proclaimed intellectual.

I am guilty of enjoying columns (now blogs) by Jug Suraiya and Bachi Karkaria, and "The speaking tree" in TOI. Else, I am regular with Time Magazine and on/off with The economist. Currently, I am hooked onto GPS by Fareed Zakaria on CNN.

i read it few times - it is too preachy for my taste (i mean i am done with my convent education! hello!) but i know it is a popular with many coz TOI people have also come out with a book that is a compilation of the speaking tree articles.

ha ha ha ha ha ha !!! this is common practice with Indian anchors, i think!

again - thanks for the laughs :)

The Tribune Chandigarh for regional news and Editorials; Times of India and The Hindu for their Editorial Pages and Financial Express for Economic and Business news, Employment News for Situations Vacant etc are reputed papers for their own readership.

S. Khushwant Singh's columns have not lost their shine even today.

it is one of its kind NewsPaper. Could be one of its kind world over too for all i know.

especially its women's fashion section and the supplementary magazines - quite good!

Could be true Kapil, but name a single editor who is completely free from political bias. All of them represent a particular political philosophy and a certain section of society.

I dismiss this argument about Vinod Sharma. Being pro-government on certain matters doesn't tantamount to be a traitor. Do you think 100% of what the government is doing is rubbish. There could be certain areas which may be subjected to criticism but not all that the government has been doing is anti-national.

Could be but his opinion on lokpal and recent happenings in Rajyasabha is favoring govt. He was talking like govt. (read congress) spokesperson. :)

I have heard him quite a few times on NDTV and have found his comments very objective. I have heard him criticizing government too wherever required.
