Sumit, Venting frustation helps in realization and accepting shameful situation is a brave act rather than of guilt. Guilt is the main cause of inaction. But really if you wish to see children having smile on their faces, you do not need to go far. Connect with Navin bhai in any manner you wish to.

You can give free education, nutrition, shelter and other essentials to every citizen in the country, but until India adopts a culture of having dignity for human life, nothing is going to change.

No offense to Navin, but there are thousands if not hundreds of thousands of social work organizations in India. But nothing has changed. People just don't give a flip about human dignity. That is evident in the fact that crowds stand like statues as petty thieves are barbarically lynched by crowds and women are raped and paraded naked in front of entire villages.

Socially, India is living in the stone age compared to western civilization. I can never imagine people relieving themselves as trains full of people pass by here in the US. Whats even worse is that people sitting in those trains turn a blind eye. I dont blame the people who are relieving themselves as much as I blame the people who turn a blind eye instead of showing disgust against such behavior. If latter had been the case people would do something about improving their hygiene and start using private/public bathrooms and make sure they do not render them unusable for the next person in line.

You know sometimes brand new buildings are demolished. Why? Because they have major structural defect. Fixing a thing here and a thing there is not going to make such a building safe for habitation. India is like a building with major structural flaws. If the country seeks to survive in a changed world, it needs to totally dismantle the structure and start from scratch with human dignity as its most basic foundation.

India is like a volcano in the making. If Indians do not reorganize ourselves socially and politically, the country will erupt in everybody's faces. If not Pakistan or China, local insurgent movements will tear apart the country. Trust me, I do not want to see any more human suffering on the top of all that is already happening there. I wish things to be resolved peacefully. Now is the time for it to be done in a peaceful manner. It may be too late in a few years.

Sumit while I might not agree with you on India exploding out some years from now or things going worse in time to come. I would rather say things will go the same in the future and that is really not a optimistic view , its a realist view as per me.

It was indeed great reading this one and the earlier post of yours.

I have had a distanct feel of how things can be started for the betterment and with whatever little experience I have , i can say that "No idea can be made to work if you do not show it by examples". Let me try to clarify. We are not living in a world of genius people , for a common person and there are plenty of them , things need to be "shown". Then they learn it and can do it themselves.
Leading by examples is the only thing that can work. If we just talk about Navin , he is one example and I am guessing he would have inspired at least 5 people to do good quality work and think on lines for a better world. The issue at hand and which is stopping the India from transforming into a Dream India is that there are not enough examples. We are not being able to convert ideas into examples for others to watch and follow.
You , me and many folks out here on this social platform itself are no exeption. :)
I did not follow the Obama campaign as such but what I heard from friends was that it was a bottom up campaign than a top down! We are so habitual of thinking top down ( and I dont blame any one for that , the size is ( in terms of Indian context) so big that just a visualisation of bottom up is scary and looks insignificant on first looks) that we literally ignore the enormous possibilities that will present themselves if we start working ( top down , bottom up , irrespective).

Sorry for being mathematical on this ( just that the mind is programmed to work that way ) , but divide is a great operator to me. If we divide Indian population into groups of 1000's , we will only have 1.15 mn groups , one "good" representative for them and we are done.

The idea should be to start (irrespective) and create /generate / inspire those representatives. :)

Thanks,
Anil

I will breifly go off-topic before I offer my comments on what we are discussing here.

I am not a fan of Indian politics as I perceive it to be a means of personal enrichment for our elected representatives. Politics should be about nation-building and not about legacy building. Politics in India has become a family business for many. If father is a CM, son is next in line to be the CM. If father is a PM, then son is next in line to be the PM. Shame on us for posessing serf-ish mentality from 16th century while living in the 21st century.

For many years I held out hope for India. I thought something could be done. People could be brought to be at par with western standards of understanding of individual freedom and liberty. I guess Indians who turn a blind eye towards the way the country has been governed in the past deserve to continue being hung upside down in police lockup and have their bones smashed.

Indian politics is the lowest of all professions. Even lower than prostitution. While a prostitute pimps off her own body, Indian politicians have pimped off the entire country and here we are having polls on whose the best PM.

Earlier today I was watching a film about the 2006 bomb blasts in Mumbai. There was such an outrage after the events. Apparantly the film was made just before the terrorists attacks in Mumbai, late last year. As expected, again there were a lot of candle-light vigils accompnies by a lt of outrage.

The Indian government has failed at the most basic function of providing security to its citizens. An ordinary MLA goes around in an official vehcle all pimped out with a beacon and a siren and the police vehicles accompanying him/her. Mayawati blatantly spends crores of rupees on building her own statues throughout UP. All this while a dehydrated poverty-stricken child is selling cold water at a railway platform in Kanpur on a hot summer day. And here we are having polls about whose the best PM.

I dont think we have yet had a PM who has honorably held the office of the PM. So, in my opinion we havent had a half-way decent PM, forget about whose the best PM.

While I do not endorse violence, all the naxal/maoist insurgencies taking root in India are an indication of the frustration of the lowest strata of Indian society. While many of you hold decent jobs and somehow manage to avoid crossing paths with "Government Servants;" there are those who have tolerated over 60 years of Government abuse.

The British did not discriminate when they broke our bones in Police Stations across the country. After the British left it was the lowest of the lowest who bore the brunt of Police abuse as they did not have anyone to fall back on. The running water, farming equipment, supplies, electricity, guaranteed markets for agricultural produce guaranteed by Indian government never materialized.

The poor farmers lost everything under the burden of of debt. Thousands committed suicide. And what are we doing about it. We are having polls on who is the best PM.

There was a time when I wanted to return to India. But, I guess I have lost all immunity to human suffering. I cannot just turn a blind eye towards people who have lost it all while there are few who have padded their pockets and bank accounts. To hell with economic development. Economic development for who? It really does not matter if Ambanis are now worth 1 gazillion dollars while they were worth half a gazillion dollars five years ago. How has the economic development helped the lowest of the lowest.

In India, there is no dignity of Human Life. A society that values Human Life does not let its weakest and the most vulnerable suffer the way they do in India. And here we are having polls about whose the best PM. Shame on us!

Please excuse all the typos as I had to rush through the post.

I agree to this.

Sumit, if India improves, then what will happen to the shock value it provides to backpackers from around the world. They spend thousands of dollars to come see the spectacle of mass defecation on railway tracks. I remember these kids $hitting at the bus stop, I mean at the bus stop in South Delhi. It was a regular ritual for them since it was right next to their jhuggi colony.

I think in India's case, the way things are, change has to begin at the top. There has to be a good leader ready to make unpopular decisions. But that leader is gonna need a critical mass of people to support his decisions. Education can be a step in the right direction.

I have a personal theory: If you take human development for a society and compare it to the school system
Africa, Bangladesh, Pak, some other ME countries: Nursery
India: LKG
China: 1st grade
Russia, Ukraine, Belarus: 2nd grade
Italy, S Korea, Greece, Israel: 5th grade
Japan: 7th grade, Germany, Aus, NZ
USA: 8th grade
Scandinavian coutries-Sweden, Finland, norway, France: 10th grade

12 pass abhi tak koi nahi hai... ;) You can add more countries to that list.
This does not mean there are no 12 th graders in India, or nursery level ppl in Germany ... there are ... but above is just avg.

As soon as we as a country stop $hitting on the streets, we will graduate to 3rd grade.

Also, Jit, you can have another poll asking for the worst PM - that would seem more fit.

well said sid !

a good leader n'vr makes unpopular decisions. if at all we find one, he will n'vr get critical mass support. all assumptions contradict each other. well no harm, lets keep our hands crossed nd carry on with the hunt for best pm. education, beyond doubt is the right answer, but what do do... aaj bhi dilli ke mcd schools mein master, padhate haan beedi phooke hae.
...
another thing, check population... if necessary force it.
...
take off few countries frm yr nursery list, viz south africa, namibia nd botswana. living standards in these countries, on average are 100 times better than india.

Correcto !! :)

Sid , I agree to Brahm's comment , and that is the very reason I have lost faith in the top down thingy working for India some day!

In the very lil of devlopmental theory I have read , it says that you need to do sacrifices at a certain point to really take off , but being a democratic nation , populist nature will be the eventuality for our politicians/leaders.

:)

The Subject!!

I think the author wanted people's opinion on the PM's we have had so far. So, I would say if the members don't feel that we have had "BEST" yet, (which obviously should be the case since we don't know the future or atleast I don't) in that case the topic of the thread could have been better described as "Best Among the Worsts"? may be?

Any way coming to the subject. What we need, is a leader who identifies the problem (which most of them I am sure may have done) identify the possible solutions, and then have the skills to sell it to public as well as the legislature. Now, the power hungry as the mankind has been, or to put in other words the Job Security that the leader may want to have to have courage to do the reform will come from the system itself. In that case probably the parliamentry system of the government may not be the most suited one. May be Presidential form the government gives the leader a lease of the term that he/she gets elected, have the choice to pick up his/her team for the administration, and then go for the execution. It has to be the synchronization of all the factors that may be needed to pursue the reforms, and that is the difficult task. But one thing is sure, the leader has to be extremely skillful in selling his ideas to the public, even though they might not be popular with a section of the society.

Our leaders have done in past, selling the reservation to the people for so many decades. Apeasement of the minority community has been another item, as well as forgiving the repayment of loans to the farmers and promissing a lot of free things to public during the election campaigns. One thing needs to be understood by the public/voters, that nothing comes for free.

I guess, it is extremely important to make society aware of the consequences of the various programs that a leader takes and it does not take on. Extremely difficult task, but definitely not impossible. Motivation of the handful of workers, persistence with the efforts and the patience for the results, that is what it requires.
Can we do it? Frankly, I have no idea at this time, but surely we would be doing biggest dis-service to the society, if we don't try "Impossible" (as Mr. Gandhi had said)

well said sid !

a good leader n'vr makes unpopular decisions.

That is right, they may not make unpopular decisions. Unpopular is the wrong word, what I meant was aggressive decisions regarding education, healthcare etc., they may not be unpopular. Like Col Tavatia said, our politicians know whats wrong, but they would go out of the way not to fix it (like education) because that might affect their vote bank. So, we need somebody who has a little bit of humanity and national interest in mind; and the intellect to recognize good policy from bad policy. Right now, we have the most venal, treacherous, spineless, gundagard politicians - this includes both Congress and BJP.

Ye toh naa insaafi hai ... only limited options ...
Kya kissi ka best inse bahar nahi ho sakta ???
AApne toh force kar diya ki best hona hai toh inhi mein se hona hai ...

Although JL Nehru and LB Shastri were before I was born, but guessing by lore about him, specially in parts of Haryana and UP, I think Shastriji was the best.

NONE of THESE.....

it is Mr. Manmohan Singh

Manmohan Singh Ji is no doubt proving to be a very good PM, and his administrative background is hlping him in certain ways......... he is definitely the best PM in recent years
But I wish, he keeps more followers........ and be a leader of masses

Best Prime Minister of India so far

I think that given the limitations of a mixed fractured mandate Shri Atal Bihari Vajpai has been the best Prime Minister of India so far. He was the person who had the courage to conduct a nuclear test despite experience of pressure in the past. He could visualise that good roads were necessary for the progress of the country and so he started the project of golden quadrilateral connecting the four Metro cities. He also wanted to connect all the rivers of India so that the problems of draught and flood could be control but the UPA Govt. has shelved this project. He also did not follow the policy of appeasement of any particular religion or group. Had he remained Prime Minister for another term the development of India would have achieved many milestones. Though Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri would have proved to be the best since he knew what is poverty so he could visualise to remove poverty but his tenure was very short. But we should be optimistic that in future some Prime Minister will bring more progress and will be the best Prime Minister of India. However, so far Shri Atal Bihari Vajpai is best to my mind.

Dr. Manmohan Singh

Our Prime Minister is possibly the most qualified PM all over the world. And as far as his administrative qualities are concerned, it has recently got a stamp of vote by Indian public. Just because he doesn't shout in rallies and parliament does not mean he is not a good politician. He has proved his political mettle when tested on Parliament's floor on the Nuclear deal issue.

I agree.
Samsher I disagree with you....
Indira Gandhi was the best PM India had so far. She was a true leader she never made any comments ever that will put her on defensive on international scene unlike Morons Singh, Sharaabi Vajpayee, Idiot Narsimha rao--who parroted Nehru's line that not a blade of grass grows in Laddakh. What did shastri do, he gave up all the gains attained by our jawans. Indira Gandhi also did the same but she gets the benefit of doubt because she cut the serpent's one head. She preserved the entity of this nation, saved the idea called India from humiliation.
Any astute politician will do everything possible to defeat his enemies. We can be smug in our judgement but how many of us can even keep our khandaans together from feuding. We are talking about keeping together a nation. This current PM aka Moron Singh is the worst, he is even worse than Kissa Kursi ka leaders like VP Singh, Charan Singh, Mootar Peenay wala Morarji Desai, Land Grabber ChanderShekhar, poetry reader IK Gujral
I can go open up the laundry list of few of these leaders especially Desai, Rao, Gujral. These Idiots have done so much damage to Indian Security establishment it will take atleast 20-30 years to recover from it.
Is there any wonder pakis can come to this nation with impunity and carry out terrorist attacks on Indian Citizens in their own country and yet all our leadership could say was, "if it happens again, there will be cost...." In any other nation leaders like these will get impeached or sent on Desh Nikala. hell even pakistan can send leaders in exile for their mistake....
Only in India people will bow to losers and take pride in it.:mad:
