New Delhi, June 30: BJP vice president and former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma died in a road accident near Shahjahanpur in Rajasthan, 80 km from Delhi, on Saturday.
While Verma along with his driver and his gunner died on the spot, four others in the car were injured.

The incident occurred at about 2:45 pm on Saturday.

The Tata Safari, in which Verma was returning from Sikar in Rajasthan, dashed against a mini-truck on the Delhi-Jaipur NH-8 highway. The car was badly crushed in the accident and efforts were being made to extricate the body from the vehicle, said BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar .

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje was rushing to the spot, Javadekar added.

"It is a very cruel death, a very unfortunate death. We pay our rich tributes to the departed leader," Javadekar said.

He said Verma's sudden demise was a big shock not just for the party but for everyone.

"He was a lively, hardworking, honest man. He fought for the cause of the poor and the working class. It is a real sorrow for all party members," Javadekar said.

Sixtyfour-year-old Verma was the Chief Minister of Delhi between 1996 and 1998. He was also the Union Labout Minister during the NDA regime.

Further reports are awaited.

Jat leader Sahib Singh Verma dies in road mishap

Dear friends,

Mr. Verma died in road mishap.

Please read below :

Senior BJP leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma has died in a road accident on Saturday in Alwar district of Rajasthan approximately 120 kms from Delhi.

The mishap occurred at 2:30 pm (IST) when the car in which Verma was travelling collided with a truck on the Delhi-Jaipur highway. Verma's driver and gunman were also killed in the accident.

The incident took place in a place called Khandwamor 10 kms from Shahjahanpur.

Verma was travelling from Neemkathana town in the Sikar district to Delhi. The BJP President Rajnath Singh has confirmed his death and termed his death as a big loss for the BJP.

The 63-year-old leader was returning from shrine at Ajmer Sharief in Rajasthan. Verma died on the spot and is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters.

Verma was the Chief Minister of Delhi between 1996 and 1998. He was BJP vice president.

Born on March 15, 1943, in Delhi's Mundka village, the former teacher rose from the ranks of a councillor in the Metropolitan Council of Delhi in 1977 to become the Union Labour Minister in 2002.

Feud with Khurana

His stint as the Chief Minister of Delhi was marked by his running feud with archrival in Delhi politics Madan Lal Khurana.

The Jat leader had replaced Khurana as Chief Minister in 1996. His tenure was marked by skyrocketing onion prices and water and power crises and he was replaced by Sushma Swaraj in October, 1998.

Described by some senior bureaucrats as the ''bull in the China shop'', Verma openly reprimanded them for expressing reservations about his decision to stick to the 9.5 per cent interest rate for EPF contributions.

Verma began his political career as a RSS Pracharak and was made the Delhi Education and Development Minister in 1993.

He had a doctorate in library sciences and was much respected among the teaching community.

We really lost a good leader, may God bless his soul and provide power to his family to bear the los

How sad.......A precious life lost.He was a good human being all the way.May God bless his soul and give strength to his family to bear this irriparable loss.

Indeed a loss for Jat community.

Irrespective of any political affiliation i have known Dr. Sahib Singh Verma for almost last 9 years because his elder son was senior/friend from college.During all these years while interacting with Dr. Verma either at his home or in social gathering, i always found him down to earth and a thorogh gentleman. There are numerous instances where i had seen Dr. Verma fighting for the cause of poors and helping the needys. Nation would always remember him for his contribution as a social worker and political leader.
may his soul rest in heaven.
Dr. Sahib Singh Verma Amar Rahe !

Tribute to Ch Sahib Singh Verma JI

He truly was the only national level Jat leader, not only it is great loss to the community ,but also to the labours and farmers of north india. Down to earth, simple, aproachable and with lot of positive vibes, he was involved in jat NGO's and had adopted a village in Rajasthan. His real gotra was "lakra".
