It is a pity that because of this sordid episode, poor Sonia is on the verge of miscarriage. Meanwhile, her father (who till now was against her) is trying to get his papers pertaining to his land in order to prove that he is Hooda and not Rathi. A mechanism should be evolved to punish those who are responsible for creating this drama by way of excommunication. First of all the security of the girl and her family must be ensured.

these types of panchayats are raelly harmfull for the growth and wellbeing of the society. just for a vested intrest of few people a happily married couple has been dragged into the story.and on top of that all those panchayati are those who don't have a basic sense of how to talk and what best for the society. all the idiots get togather with no brains in them to make decesion on somebody's else life. thats really rediculous.
shame on such panchayats.

The Haryana Govt. has a program called "Sarkar Apke Dwar". I am sure that many bureaucrats in the Govt. have heard this episode via media coverage. For an episode of this magnitude, the chief minister's entourage should show up in Asanda village and set things straight.

It seems to me that this Gotra issue may weaken the panchyat system to the extent that people with stop paying attention to panchyats anymore.

What a ludicurous decision.

Ranbir Singh Dahiya (Oct 11, 2004 08:13 a.m.):
Panchayat Issued a PHATWA to Mrs Sonia to accept her husband as her brother. Sonia said that she will prefer to sacrifice her life rather than to accept her husband as her brother. She said these words to panchayat with tears in her eyes but panchayat did not pay heed to her appeal and issued the PHATWA. But her husband could not dare to defy the PHATWA.They belong to village Asanda. Rampal Dahiya s/o Sh. Omparkash of village Asanda married Sonia Rathi d/o Sh Satbir of Kiloi village about one and a half year ago.It was a love marriage and it was registered in the court also. Rampal and his family accepted this marriage but the family of Sonia and their so called ‘Khap’ was not happy and they were considering it against the gotra panchayat They were trying to break this relation. At last on Sunday i.e. on 10th Oct.2004 Rathi Gotra Panchayat was held and this PHATWA was issued. Is it possible to accept this PHATWA? If not then what should be done to support the couple .Sonia has three months pregnancy. What will happen to this innocent child?

Dear All,

This episode is now all over the media. The affected individuals and their family members are being interviewed by many TV Channels and what comes out of the whole issue is false ego and pride of our community. What a shame to see the Sarpanch say that "even if she is a Hooda, she is not acceptable as Hooda and Dahiya are brothers too. Wait till the politicians step in and create further confusion.

What also comes out quite clearly is that despite the 'so called progress' society has made, the conditions in the villages has remained the same.

The best thing that would come out of this episode is that women have started questioning the dictats of the panchayat. At one time people used to say 'Panch Parmeswar' and the Sarpanch was respected and adored. Now may be the women should take the law into their own hands (like women in Nagpur did when they lynched two eveteasers recently) and question this nonsense that passes off as culture, tradition or whatever.

Could someone kindly educate me about the inter Gotra relationships in our community?

Regards,

JS Malik

Dear all,

My view is that women issues will only be given importance in panchayats ONLY WHEN WOMEN PARTICIPATE ACTIVELY in panchayats. All other areas whether household work or may be agriculture etc women give their heavy participation BUT they are not allowed to express themselves in panchayats.

This panchayat decision has dishonored the pride of a WIFE and also a SISTER.

Then all Indians are brothers/sisters, as we used to recite in grade schools something like:

Hum Hindustani Bhai Bhai ...

What a bunch of crock by this sarpanch fellow! As I wrote earlier, we are indeed hearing disapproval by some folks simply because they don't like somebody. Nothing else!

I hope some good lessons are learnt here when the dust gets settled.

Oh Man! It's like being back into the dark ages again! It is too surreal to think that we are talking about a present day incident!!!...

...The damn audacity of this Sarpanch and the Panchayat! >(
It is at times like this one questions the validity of the ever discussed concern about most villages not uplifting any faster as the rest of the society... Well, No points for guessing this one!

Great job Uday...every little bit helps in a situation like this. Let us hope October 24 brings good news for Sonia!

Thanks,

Sujata

i saw the interviews recently on the TV and i heard some police walas saying they cannot do anything till someone files a complain (i dont understand this...for providing security to politicians no one has to file a complain, but to ordinary citizens they come out with all the crap excuses). I hope someone files an fir or a pil in court soon. i am sure the TV walas are also trying to arrange for a Live telecast of the panchayat either directly from the village or the from there studios just like the Gudia episode.

"Can Husband be Made Brother?"

Only in Jat Community by our famous Khaps.

It is painful to hear what our Khaps are doing. If that is what they are doing, let us not have them. More painful is that the District administration, Police and local MLA and MP had done nothing in this matter. It required a Goel Advocate to file the petition. Where are all Jat Advocates? Not even one considered his moral duty to challange Khap's decision to help this young couple.

The reaL issue is that the village has rathi's and then as per that she becomes daughter of village and such marriages will only spoil social harmony of village. This is very old case and earlier also KHAP had told the Dahiya Family that they can settle somewhere else but not in village and they are very right in their decision seeing the social responsibility. Media has projected the same in wrong way and not portryed the real issue.
