Climate change has already affected agriculture, human health, ecosystems on land and in the oceans, water supplies, and some people's livelihoods.

The new report of the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has once again sounded a warning bell about impending disasters, raising it to a whole new level this time.

The Tribune dated 31 March, 2014 Chandigarh, Haryana Edition, page 1 says in the lead news: Everyone will feel the heat, warns UN Climate Change Report'.

The enlightened jatland.com members are requested to read the extracts of the report published in the Tribune by logging in :

TATA CAMELOT PROJECT
Green nod already given, SC told

New Delhi, March 28
The Union Ministry of Forests and Environment (MoEF) today informed the Supreme Court that the environmental clearance had been already given to the controversial high-rise Camelot project of the Tata Housing Development Company, near Chandigarh’s Sukhna Lake.

“The case was last considered by the (Punjab) state-level expert appraisal committee in its 74th meeting on August 14, 2013, which recommended environmental clearance to the project. Thereafter, the state Environmental Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), Punjab, issued environmental clearance on September 17, 2013,” the MoEF said in an affidavit filed through Additional Solicitor General Mohan Jain.
The brief four-page affidavit said the SC “may be pleased to pass order as may be deemed just and proper in the circumstances of the case”.
The litigation arises from three petitions against the project. Two of these were filed by the Sarin Memorial Legal Aid Foundation while the third was by Aalok Jagga, a PIL petitioner, in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
When the case came up for hearing today before a Bench of Justices RM Lodha and Kurian Joseph, the petitioners said the MoEF was yet to file its response. At this, ASG Mohan Jain said it would be done later in the day, upon which the Bench posted the case for final hearing on April 22.
On October 7, 2013, the SC had issued a notice, returnable in eight weeks, to Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, besides the Centre, on the plea against the proposed construction of 1,794 residential flats. The company had then agreed to “maintain status quo”, which the SC recorded in its order.
The petitioners have challenged the HC’s August 21, 2013, order, giving the green signal to the Tata project subject to the company getting all necessary clearances.
According to the petitioners, the proposed project would destroy fragile ecology of the region, comprising Sukhna Lake, Shivalik range and a wildlife sanctuary.
The Bench has clarified that status quo will cover even processing of the company’s applications for clearances.

Rise in sea level doubled in three decades: Experts

Panaji, June 5
The rise in sea level in the world is around three millimetre per year, which is double the rate three decades ago, a senior scientist said here today.

“The rise in sea level was 1.8 millimetre three decades ago, but it has now increased to three millimetre per year, due to various factors,”
said AS Unnikrishnan, researcher at the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), at an event organised to celebrate World Environment Day here.

He said studies were still on to ascertain the reason behind the rise in sea level, whether it was natural variability or it was a result of global warming.
“In the 1970s, thermal expansion and glacier melting accounted for 75 per cent of ocean rise,” he said, adding that other factors contributed to the remaining 25 per cent.
Unnikrishnan said since 1992, satellite altimeters had been used to measure changes in sea level.
“Since the last couple of years, Indo-French satellite SARAL-Altika has been measuring changes in glaciers which contributes to rise in sea level,” the researcher, who is part of a team monitoring shore water rise, said. Unnikrishnan said rising sea level would continue, but people should not fear catastrophes. — PTI

Environmentalists are worried that now even rain water harvesting and rainfall recharge of the ground water would not be sufficient to replenish the level of the ground water table to the earlier normal levels.

But we don't care. we still have the poisoned ground water, polluted rivers and ganda naalas from where we can still get our daily supply of water after filtration. And if that does not work we can all shift to the coastline where we can use the brackish sea water after energy/fuel intensive desalination. And if even that does not work, we can jump into the sea!!!!!

The callous and intentionally ignorant attitude of the society will lead to a very scary situation in the near future signs of which the society is already facing in terms of rising temperatures and sea levels, melting of glaciers, drying up of rivers, imminent no ground water in future!!!!!

But all these are not our own problems personally but the society's, which will have to find a solution and not us. After all it is all about development - air conditioned glass, concrete and steel structures with oven like temperatures outside. Way to go!

Was eradication of Dinasour's due to human activity on environment? Likewise rise in temp is least to do with human activity. Its all happening in Sun.

Nothing can be said on this aspect with certainty as expert "studies were still on to ascertain the reason behind the rise in sea level, whether it was natural variability or it was a result of global warming."

What is happening in the sun?

To come to your point of extinction of dinosaurs, it certainly was not due to human activity.

But let us not forget since the advent of industrial revolution in Europe and thereafter to the rest of the world, the human race has altered the face of the earth, directly in the areas inhabited by them and indirectly in the uninhabited areas.

A case in point is our rivers which have pristine waters at the point of their origination, but by the time they enter the sea/ocean, they are nothing more than a sludge of industrial and household effluents.

Look at the air you breath. You will find gross difference in the quality of air in the cities, villages, the mountains and forests (whatever little are left). Why is there a difference in air quality if not for human activity?

Can we also ignore the scientific research done over decades which blames industrial and other human activity for increase in greenhouse gases which ultimately is leading to global warming.

Of course, nature also is in a state of constant change, but that change is not so sudden or obvious unless it is a violent phenomenon such as a volcano, an earthquake or a tsunami. Scientific studies and measurements have noted dramatic environmental changes in a relatively short time span of two-three centuries.

Trees are mindlessly being cut to make way for the so-called development. We in our quest to copy the west are going for their definition of development which is highly unsustainable. It has been said that if all the people in the world were to follow the American example of consumerism, lifestyle, development, etc. we would need at least three earths in terms of the resources requirement.

The choice is ours - whether we let nature function as it has been functioning for lakhs of years or we want to completely destroy it for enjoying our today.

Was eradication of Dinasour's due to human activity on environment? Likewise rise in temp is least to do with human activity. Its all happening in Sun.

In view of the danger to earth due to rise of the sea level, the U N O has declared the theme of the INTERNATIONAL Environment Day this year as :

'RAISE YOUR VOICE, DO NOT RAISE SEA LEVEL'

Environment Minister, Prakash Javadekar said in a written reply that 42 rivers are now covered by National River Conservation Plan (NRCP) and National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) in 199 towns spread over 21 states. The sanctioned cost for this project is Rs. 10716.45 crore.

The minister added that Rs. 5097.50 crore was released by the Centre to state governments till the end of March this year in order to implement various pollution abatement schemes.

Javadekar noted that 1193 schemes out of 1430 sanctioned schemes have been completed under NRCP and NGRBA.

Thousands rally globally over climate change
People’s Climate March: UN chief, Hollywood star DiCaprio join march in NY to put spotlight on crisis

New York, September 22
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio joined thousands of people for a march through the city to shine the spotlight on the climate crisis with the UN chief stressing that there is no 'Plan B' to halt advance of climate change as there is no 'Planet B.'
About 400,000 people participated in one of the largest global calls for climate action at the People's Climate March here yesterday that also saw participation by NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, former US Vice-President Al Gore, New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, US Senator Chuck Schumer and musician Sting.
Speaking to journalists after walking in the rally, Ban said the world needs to "galvanise our action" and harness the people's "power to change." He said the international community should adopt measures to halt the advance of global climate change as there is no "Plan B" for action as there is no "Planet B."
The rally, which came just two days before Climate Summit at the UN Headquarters, saw politicians, celebrities, activists and the general public march though the city to highlight global concerns about a lack of international action to stop the deleterious effects of climate change.
The summit is expected to draw more than 120 heads of state and government to galvanize action on climate change. The People's Climate March is part of a worldwide campaign to persuade global leaders to act decisively on the issue.
Similar climate events were reported in 2,000 locations around the world.

you'll find my answer on the subject in one of my previous post >>> http://www.jatland.com/forums/showthread.php?28990-Worlds-biggest-fraud-again-by-USofA&p=232863&viewfull=1#post232863

for those who are interested, the thread shares some very original and authentic viewpoint of erstwhile (my contemporary) members.

A very startling report published by World Wildlife Fund says that the greed of human to acquire more and more control over natural resources has risen to greater heights in recent decades. In the process, half of wildlife has been lost during the course of last 4 decades starting from 1970. The Tribune, Chandigarh dated 13th October, 2014 carries an editorial -- We grow, they die -- on the issue which is quite thought provoking. Hence reproduced below:

http://www.tribuneindia.com/2014/20141013/edit.htm#2

We grow, they die
Half of wildlife lost in 40 years, no mourning

ANATOMICALLY modern man walked this earth the first around two lakh years ago. A tough but peaceful co-existence with his environment continued through the ages. In just the past 40 years, however, man has caused the loss of half of the world's wildlife population, i.e., compared to what it was in 1970. And even then it was only a fraction of what it was a couple of hundred years previous to that. This is according to the '2014 Living Planet Report' published by the World Wildlife Fund, which is an index that tracks the numbers of animals in selected populations of vertebrates —mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish — across the globe.
This shocking bit of statistic found a passing mention in the mainstream media in India, and no debate — forget outrage or disbelief — followed. That is shocking. Shocking because it exposes the level of awareness we as a society have of what we are doing to ourselves, not just to ‘innocent animals’. For the scientifically unaware, which includes the mass of political leadership, bureaucracy and industry, it may be put this way: Humans are a product of the environment as it existed before they came around. They are designed by nature to eat, breathe and live in that environment. Will killing that ecosystem — all forests, land, water and air — leave us humans unharmed? And the rate at which we are making wildlife, the fruit of that environment, disappear is evidence of that murder.
Information technology, global sharing of knowledge, and investment in data collection have today given us a far better understanding than ever of what and where the threats are, and how they can be tackled. But human population and greed that have led to climate change and loss of wildlife habitat - primary drivers of the catastrophe - may prove to be forces too strong for better sense to counter. Amidst this blazing loss of not just population of animals but also species, let us not forget we are also just another species.

Can we(jatland) do any thing for minimum use of Diesel which is one of the major source for GHG as a token contribution towards intellectual discussion....

Does this February- March sudden change of climate resulting in chilly weather, frost, hail-storms and rains indicate the enormous changes being taking place in weather conditions due to climatic changes being brought about by depletion of ozone layer, is a million dollar question ! If this type of changes continue the crop pattern also is likely to be adversely affected leading to immense loss of agricultural products as has happened in certain parts of India due to this sudden and unexpected turn of events.

The loss of flora and fauna, dilapidation of forest areas, land erosion caused by blind use of building material from the banks of rivers and river beds, lost wet lands and pollution caused by industrial units and vehicular traffic has changed the atmosphere around the globe in such a drastic manner that unpredictable climatic changes are leading to recurrence of furious floods, torrential heavy rains, hail storms and ice storms.

Are all these warnings not enough for the people to rise and take pragmatic steps to stop further spread of pollution and thus save mother earth as well as mankind ?
