Yeah, there is a super power and that super power let an 21 year old innocent girl assassination in 26/11 attack. She could never wish bad for anyone.

Lets take the case of my friend: He is non-religious, rational and does not believe in astrology and all. It was a relative who consulted this pundit for the first time for him. And the prediction was accurate. Would you apply selection bias in this case?

Personally, I do not believe in anything like this. But if people have these beliefs, and they/their family are happy following them, then good for them.

Thank god for one sane opinion! And this is what I read today:
"Rational arguments don't usually work on religious people. Otherwise, there wouldn't be religious people."

Apart from selection bias, another thing that influences people big time is confusing correlation with causation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correlation_causation
Koi kahega- "Aaj kaali billi rasta kaat gayi, isliye mera accident ho gaya". While it may be a fact that both things happened quite close to each other, what proves that kaali billi was the reason? Bad stuff happens on a regular basis. And the supposedly bad omens (billi, chheenk, aankh phadakana, etc. etc.) also happen on a regular basis. There is heavy correlation between such common occurrences. It is very easy to attribute something shitty that happened to you to some bad omen/ bhavishyavaani or something funky.

What makes this worse is bhed-chaal. One person would say this.
And then, all his near and dear ones and then near and dear ones of his near and dear ones, would become quick believers of the theory. So the first guy makes the common error of confusing correlation with causation. And once he has peddled his story, every one else goes around actively trying to prove this notion. Many times, nothing happens despite the bad omen/bhavishyavaani. But the reaction then is "Bach gaye!!" rather than "Yeh sab bakwaas hai". This is where selection bias comes into play, as we are biased to give the negative incidents more weightage in selection, while not taking into account the times when nothing happened.

if it need good people for itself why the hell do it make good people.

Ok ...
What did your friend know from the pandit? Was it some dates?
What kind of information did the pandit elicit from your friend's relative before making his 'prediction'. What is the pandit's background? Are you sure your friend did not fudge the pandits prediction - told you something other than what the pandit really said?
There are a million more questions that can be asked here and there are several weak links.

If such pandits could predict the future, they would be hard to find because they would be working for various intelligence agencies around the world.

Also Wall St would not exist in its current form.

Get over this ... free yourself .. it will feel good.

Well, I was never into it to begin it :), niether did that incident convert me.
The surprise element was just that pandit predicted a range covering three days only. And, I knew the dates before the result.

Well, this IS selection bias. That is looking at this example in isolation and ignoring all other examples where pandits get it wrong. If I sit and make random predictions about all and sundry all day long, I'd get some right. Though I can understand that if it happens with you, you do feel WTF.

Also, there is some logic/science behind some of this supposedly "paranormal" stuff. The leading master of this field in the world who can do jaw-dropping stuff is Derren Brown. He can easily replicate the usual "Kala Jadoo" stuff, more intricate magic tricks, and even more complex tricks that one finds hard to fathom. Recently, he "predicted" the exact UK national lottery number. But the best part is that he asserts that there is nothing "paranormal" about it, and there is some logic behind everything. That is he is firmly on the side of science. You can find a few of his achievements here:

Just watch some of his videos on youtube and you'd know what I am talking about.

I hear you completely.
If that pundit had just said that my friend would get an approval, then it would have been just a either/or scenario or a selection bias. But the time that he predicted was what threw us off.

Interesting vaad-vivaad. All that matters is your personal belief, if you want to believe in palmistry, astrology etc by all means do it, if you don't then give a swift kick to every palmist, astrologer. My personal question is if all these palmists and astrologers know so much about other's life how come they can't predict their own prosperity, accidents, mishap etc.
I think it was Sunil or someone else who said, they have friends who could not get into IAS interview process. Don't get disheartened by that, you are not the right 'cultural fit' for that environment. Interviewers can determine that during process. Cultural fit is a euphemism-metaphor for people who work against the established norm may it be race, creed, color, ethnicity, height, weight etc.
I do agree with Sunil that there are some individuals who just ruin your day-their presence is so abhorred you may want to kick them in knees at every chance you get.
Carl Sagan once said, Astronomy is a science, Astrology is a psuedo science.
I tend to agree with Carl Sagan.

1.karam or kismat ek hai karam karoge to aapko kuch accha milega whi aapki kismat ban jaygi. meri mummy ji bolti hai kaam or kismat dono bhai bhen hai.
2.pap or punya>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>ager ham kiske sath bura karte hai to ...jiske sath ham bura karege wo kis or sath karega..or koi hamhare sath bhi karega.is trha punya ki baat hai ......................baki sab chiz kaam ki nhi hai.........like kundli, pandit, tok, jado tona bakar ki baate hai

he is exactly right. sanchit karm se hi kismat banti hai.
pap punya is related to ethics and morality. kisi vyakti ya samaj ka bura karna paap aur bhala karna punya hota hai.

and this ponga pandit stuff, janampatri, jadu tona, nazar lagna is all bakwaas just to fool ppl
