I was surprised by the fact that the Times of India listed his mother's name as Daya Kaur. Is this a case of Jaat - Jatt marriage?

केसे जाट हो भाई ,एकदम बेसिक ज्ञान भी कोन्या तन्ने जट्टां के बारे में |​
 
खैर यहा तो सवाल करने वाला एक जट्ट हैं , मेरे साथ भी एक बार ऐसे ही हुआ था, जब मैं 9वी क्लास मे था तो एक फॉर्म भरते वक़्त जब मैंने अपनी माता का नाम रिसाल कौर लिखा था तो हमारे एक गुरुजी अश्वनी ठाकुर हिमाचल से उन्होने भी मुझसे ऐसा ही सवाल किया , कौर !!! आर यू सिक्ख ? , मक्का गुरु जी हिन्दू सिक्ख का तो पता नहीं पर जट्ट जरूर हु और यह कौर लिखना तो आम हैं हमारे जट्टों मे .....कहने का मतलब यह हैं की ऐसी बातों से पता चलता हैं की ब्राह्मणवादी सोच ने हमे किस कदर जकड़ रखा हैं |

I knew Devi was a common suffix but it was the first time I saw Kaur. Well, we learn new things everyday. :)
 
"कौर" शबद "कुमारी" शब्द का अपभरंश हे | कुमारी > कुंवारी >कुंवर >कौर | जट्टू या पंजाबी में कुमारी को कुँआरी या कोंरां ही बोलते हैं |

Isnt Kaur derived from "Kaurvaki"..meaning brave/courageous? Like a female equivalent of Singh? Thats what I remember reading from a book.

Kaurwaki - Meaning and definition ... Look up: Kaurwaki . Kaurwaki Maharani Kaurwaki was a fisherwoman and later on became one of Ashoka`s wives.

Wiki says different and is closer to what I said. The article is a little Sikh focused but it does talk about the word's origins. I must say I always take Wiki with a pinch of salt as the content can be biased depending upon the writer.
