Dear Friends, we ( a small group at IISc) are just Curious to know if anyone friend or relative have joined Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Babgalore, this year (2009) in any stream ?

Till now no response??

Are Jats' not capable of getting admission such institutes of India or are we not aware enough or are we not putting the effort at it??

Just want to know more, jats are not there in such institutes, expect a few??

Regards,
Manoj

There would be around 1500 seats at undergrad level in IISc. That is not a lot if you consider total number of students applying for such prestigious institues. Let's take a really optimistic case- 5% of these seats are filled by Jats (I think Jats number to around 1-2% of Indian population, so this is almost three times our proportion of population). That is still only 75. Assume each admission is known by 40 other Jats- gives you 3000 people knowing of such an admission. On the other hand, JL has 2316 active members. No. of views on this thread is much lesser- 28. So from a population of Jats of over 1 crore, how much overlap are you really expecting (even in the most optimistic case)? Convert these numbers into probabilities, and you will see what odds you are looking at. Point being- that no reply here has nothing to do with presence or absence of Jats in such institutes.

Hi Pradeep, Sat Kumar Tomer has completed his master degree in Civil Engineering from IISc Bangalore, and now he is pursuing Phd in the same stream from the IISc Bangalore, you can contact him at 09986568525.

For your kind information I would like to tell that IISc does not have any undergraduate course so I dont know which Institute are you talking about??

I dont want get in complex subjects like probability but I know one fact that every year at least 1 student from our community joins IISc.

Thanks for your reply.

Manoj,

My mistake if IISc doesn't have UG courses. I got to that interpretation from a newspaper report. Nevertheless, you just said that at least 1 student from our community joins IISc. I think there may be more. But my point was just that it is highly unlikely that there would be overlap between people knowing about an admission and people who would have seen this thread. And I made that point because of this in your last post:

"Are Jats' not capable of getting admission such institutes of India or are we not aware enough or are we not putting the effort at it??"

Not getting a response here is not same as no one getting an admission and is no reflection on our capability.

Kapil

Yes Kapil bhaai, your probability theory is right but the thing is that right now there are at least 12 Jats @IISc and almost all of them are here at JL also (some joined JL even before joining iisc)!! I mean, students(/others too) who are going 'out' and have net access; they 'tend' to look for fellow Jats.
So, the 'effective' probability is slightly higher than that postulated by you. :)

Probably...:D
I am not saying that the attempt to look for fellow Jats is wrong. That is not my case at all! I was just saying that the probability of finding via this medium is low (give or take a few % points :D) and one must not jump to a conclusion that Jats are not in these institutes at all if one doesn't get a reply. That is what I saw in both my UG/PG colleges- I never knew a Jat was joining, but every year there were some.

yes, thats true. :D Statistic dictates that with 12 Jat guys in IISc, there should be at least 4 Jat girls also... but 'apparently' there are none. :p

i know, i know 'sample size' is very small and 'fluctuations' could be significantly large .. but then give or take few % points :D.

I too dont say that we are not capable, I just floated the options to get the views. Personally I feel we are capable but we are not aware or not interested thats why we are less in numbers here. There should be much more Jats in IISc. If you see statistics of other communities which is approximately of same size as of Jats in India but they are approximately one third or more of IISc community.

Sunil has already replied to this that most of Jats who are at IISc were members of Jatland before joining IISc. Similarly I expected a response from somebody whose friend/relative got admission because Jatland members belongs to every part of world not only India.

There may be few reason for not getting a response here:
1. There may not be single addition to 12 this year (its very early to expect any response).
2. People may not know even what is IISc?
3. People may not be interested in answering such queries, as sometimes you dont get reply to such queries even if you send a mail to particular person.

Manoj

Hi all,
I am at TIFR Mumbai doing a Ph D in Physics. It seems there are quite a few jats at IISc but here there are quite a few of us (as far as I know). I was just curious to know why it might be so. One reason probably is that it's not as big an Institute in terms of no. of departments and streams. I would like to know in general which streams are these people in (eg if people are more in Engineering related streams then that can be one reason of their less no. here) and where have they done their graduation and postgraduation generally (so that I can get an idea about in which colleges/ universities people are aware of these places).

No. of depart. in IISc are 42 ( including Science and Engin. stream)
No. of student are nearly 2300
we here are 12 in number ( there may few more but we are not aware of them),
4 in Science stream and 8 in Engin. stram

I would like to add some more points about IISc.
It spends maximum amount on research among all universties in India.

1st IIT(kharagpur) in India was established by IISc.
GATE toppers got admission here.
it's not a small institute, It's the oldest and most prestigious institute of India(both in science and engineering)

सही कहवे सै के छोरे ??? :D

Institute' prestige doesn't matter much in research programmes. Reputation/publications from the lab/research group you have joined or you are going to join is most important. Joining a prof @ xyz university who is doing some good work is far far better than joining 'many' labs @IISc. :) One good old saying: all that glitters is not Gold. :D

Prestige comes with work. It may be possible that some departments are not performing well in IISc but overall IISc is setting standard for others in research. Many researchers of our country worked(no need to tell names you know much better than me) here. IISc established the research infrastructure in India. IISc is much better than any other institute in India.

wo kahan karre bhai ke jattan ke balakn ki class 10 pe bus ho jayya kare tham itne pad likh liye ibb tham surru karro koi aisa abhiyaan gaama me.jis se apne balak aage aaye jaisa wo bihar me 2-3 doston ne bana rakha hai jisme 100 gareeb bihari har saal IIT me jaate hain . urr bhai agar sirf pisse hi kamane ki baat hai to bhai akeli padayi uska tareeka koni or 10vi pass bhi kisse IIM IISC walle se gana kamma liya karre kai be.

Hi Pradeep and Praveen,
Thanks for the information. I knew about the pure science research part of IISc well. Profs. from there keep coming here to give talks and vice-versa. But at TIFR, it's pure sciences only. No engineering departmrnts. Total number of people also is less.
