* I read in an interview of his that Sejwal, 19, is not eyeing a medal this time. Frankly, he doesn't have a realistic chance of doing so either. But the statement smacks of the archaic Indian mentality when it comes to sports: It's not about winning (or should we say losing) but participation.

Contrast this with Michael Phelps. The American was just 17 when he won six golds in Athens. By the time he was 24, Ian Thrope had retired with nine Olympic medals to his credit.

Anyways, with swimming well out of Indian sporting consciousness, it's foolish to expect Sejwal doing a Thorpe or a Phelps.

* Interestingly, it isn't for the first time a Jat is making a splash in the pool. Anyone remembers Khazan Singh -- the country's best known swimmer till date?

Hello Kabir,

What category is he participating in??? I read in the first post "Breaststroke" ...not sure 50m 100m or 200m or 1000000m. Ok. Now tell me Kabir, how have Thorpe and Phelps fared in this category? How many medals have they won till date in breaststroke? No, I am not degrading them. They are swimming greats. But then, we are talking about "breaststroke" swimming.

Nobody compared Sejwal with Phelps or Thorpe.
From my previous post: "
Thorpe ar Phelphs te bhi na homti breaststroke to"
What I meant was.... "Just because Phelps (forget Thorpe, he's retired) is not a competitor....Sejwal has a good chance in breaststroke". Well there are others too but "greats"??? I doubt. An upset 'can' happen...howsoever slim the chances maybe. Sad to know you thought someone(here me) was drawing a comparison. I very well know what Thorpe was (he ruled) and what Phelps is (he rules) to swimming.

As per my information, Phelps did not participate under breaststroke category in Athens. Please confirm.

Anyways... Khazan Singh??... mhaare gaam me ek Tau huya karta is naam ka.... Dadaji batave the "koi 20 ek saal pehlam gaam ke jhod me doob gya hota vo Khazan"...
.manney tey itna he bera sei.

Please let me know more about Khazan Singh - The Swimmer. I wish to know.

P.S.: There is no harm in expecting from Sejwal. They say "You never know"

Khajan Singh Tokas

Found about Khajan Singh Tokas...
http://www.jatland.com/home/Khajan_Singh_Tokas

Its very embarrassing for me that I didn't know about this SUPER swimmer despite the fact that he belongs to a neighbouring village.

Thanks Kabir for mentioning him in this thread. I hope Sejwal (Sandeep) takes inspiration from the former national swimming champion of India.

Sandeep is going to participate in 100 M and 200 M breaststroke. His best timings are 7 second off the world record in 100 meters and 15 seconds off the world record in 200 meters so not really a medal prospect as of now. Phelps dint win much in breaststroke, he was more into butterfly and freestyle. Though he did win the individual medley so he cud swim pretty much any style.. Thorpe is the Michael Jordan of swimming, Incomparable...
