Dirty politics in UP over birthday celebrations of Raja Mahendra Pratap

Just came across the news.

The issue seems to be needlessly communalized and politicized. The problem seems to be the political overtones via involvement of ABVP and the BJP in organizing it and the opposition by SP.

I think the AMU management should take the lead and organize a function themselves, thus cutting down the motives of political mileage of any party.

Its shocking how dirty the UP politics can go over the birthday of Raja Mahendra Pratap celebrations. The very university which was given land by Raja Mahendra Pratap is opposing the birthday celebrations by fabricating the false threat of communal riots and SP is supporting the university in opposing the celebrations.

Its despicable if they do not honour the man who gave them the land to set it up. Does anyone know if AMU honors Raja Mahendra Pratap in anyway untill now. Perhaps a bust, or a picture anywhere in the campus?

Aligarh Muslim Univ fanatics won't allow celebration of Jat King Mahendra's Anniversa

MUSLIMS's DENY JAT CELEBRATION TO BJP and HRD MINISTER SMIRTI IRANI
Late Jat King Mahendra Pratap Singh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahendra_Pratap) had donated land to AMU (Aligarh Muslim University), and the same university which is a minority institute (its VC and student union comprised mainly of muslim students) will not allow Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani and BJP to hold birth anniversary of King Mahendra Pratap Singh. Talk about being thankless and communal. In a free and secular country, if you can not show gratitude for receiving the donation, then at least do not take away other's freedom to celebrate their anniversaries.

RADICAL ISLAM IS INTOLERANT
There are nearly 50 Muslim majority countries in the world, none of those is a democracy and none of those allow non-muslims equal religious rights, Muslims can not demand the very same right when in minority which they deny to others wherever and whenever they are in majority. MUTUAL OBLIGATION and RECIPROCITY. What does that tell us? That radical Islam is incompatible with democracy, freedom, equality and tolerance and Islam in general is relatively more prone to radicalization?

The center for study of terrorism conducted a 10 year study, they cataloged 20,000 terror attacks over a period of 10 years, out of which 10,000 attacks were religious terror attacks, 97% of which NO SURPRISE WERE BY RADICAL MUSLIMS. Granted that most muslims are not terrorists, but can we ignore the fact that most terrorists globally are muslims. DATA SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. Ironically, biggest victims of radical islam are muslims themsleves. Thus onus is on moderate and liberal muslims to counter the radical elements within their community rather than act as muslim-apologetic.

THREAT TO WORLD PEACE, WHY YOUR SILENCE IS BAD
RELIGION OF PIECE (of bloody sh*t), is the single biggest threat to the world peace, but not many people have guts to say that even though empirical evidence indicates this and even if most people privately crib about it. It is not the few bad people who harm the world most, it is the silence of many good people like you that damages the society more as it is akin to a mute consent to the radicals to continue to wage their jehadist and intolerant agenda.

SECULARISM DOES NOT EQUATE TO ALLOWING NONSENSE
I support secularism and freedom but I despise cowardice of silence in the name of pseudo-secularism. Secularism means RATIONALITY & OBJECTIVITY. Secularism also means FREEDOM. I do respect people's FREEDOM TO believe in radical Islam, but we do not have to respect the their theo-political indoctrination of hatred. Thus, secularim does not mean turning a blind eye to the nonsense or letting injustice be done in the name of tolerance. Can't allow fanatics to hold the civic society hostage to their narrow thankless communal agenda.

The Aligarh Muslim University has warned of communal tensions in the campus if the BJP proceeds with plans to celebrate the birth anniversary of Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh on December 1 at the campus gates, say reports.

According to reports, AMU vice chancellor Lt Gen (retired) Zameer Uddin Shah has written to union HRD ministerSmriti Irani and has warned about the possible ramifications if the celebration goes ahead as planned. However, Shah did not mention the names of the parties- neither the BJP, which has planned the event, or the Samajwadi Party, which has opposed it in the letter. Shah has reportedly warned that the political games played out by "certain elements" might be detrimental to peace on the campus.
An excerpt of Shah's letter to Irani reads, "In view of the threat of disturbance from these people, claiming to be affiliated to various political parties/outfits, another political outfit opposing them joined the fray and announced that they would not allow the rally to be held. This political gamesmanship, if allowed to proceed, has potential for serious trouble".
The controversy started after Uttar Pradesh BJP's president Laxmikant Bajpaiannounced plans to celebrate Jat king Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh's birth anniversary on campus. According to him, the king had donated land to the university during his reign.
The Students Union at AMU has also said they shall not support or allow any programme to be organised by the "BJP or the RSS" at the campus on December 1. The union had earlier supported the programme which was to be held at the Tikonia Ground in Aligarh.

I don't think BJP too is pushing for it due to any altruistic reasons. They want mileage out of it. After all, their parent Jan Sangh opposed the Raja when he stood for elections in the 1952 Lok Sabha elections.

The only way AMU can beat the political parties at their own game is if it organizes an event itself without any shadow of any party.

kisi "asli jaat" ka khoon nahi khola ab tak!!...strange!!

If you want to create an unrest then use the name Jat King and play the emotions of Jats and Muslims where as the same Jats are waiting for their sugarcane crops to be honoured. Speaking of honouring, why dont central govt announce something in capital itself on the king?

Just have a look at the statement - Minister of State for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said, "There should not be politicisation of event to honour the Jat leader who gave land for the AMU."

Not many jats know of Raja Mahender Pratap , He was the original founder of INA which was the given to Subash Bose.

However both parties agreed for a joint celebration.

http://www.deccanchronicle.com/1411...es-hrd-minister-over-plans-mark-raja-mahendra

Some BJP leaders have decided to hold a demonstration on the campus on the birth anniversary of Raja Mahendra Pratap, an alumnus of AMU, whose family was closely associated with Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the founder of the institution.

"Some elements are threatening to hold a demonstration on the grounds that Raja Mahendra Pratap donated large tracts of land for establishment of AMU and should be honoured accordingly.

"We have always acknowledged that the Raja did lease 3.04 acres of land to AMU in 1929 at a rate of Rs. 2/- per annum.

We are proud of this freedom fighter. However, there were a large number of other donors and the main campus of the AMU was built on a land procured from the British government originally belonging to the Aligarh cantonment," he said.

Some local and state BJP leaders had recently claimed that AMU was built on land donated by Raja Mahendra Pratap but AMU authorities "failed to acknowledge his contribution".

The Vice Chancellor said that in order to defuse the situation, they had agreed to hold a joint celebration on Raja's birth anniversary

"On November 25, at the instance of some ex-servicemen of this district, who offered to mediate, I held a meeting with representatives of some outfits who are threatening to hold the demonstration. The idea was to defuse the situation and we agreed to hold a joint celebration of the Raja's anniversary".

However, the decision to observe the anniversary has now been revoked due to reports that there are internal differences within the group which was holding the protest, he said.

Finally "asli jat"!....hahahaha

jokes apart, I understand that issue is blown out of proportion and there were many donors so it is not possible to celebrate the birthday of all by AMU and it was never celebrated at past. But raja mahendra partap is a distinct figure , his due credit is not given to him neither by jats nor by people of India(jats are always marginalized in history? or because he was Marxist?) and sky was not going to fall if that event would have organized in AMU.

More and more people need to read about this great and visionary man. He was also nominated for Noble peace prize, perhaps only nomination from jats so far!

anyway, good or bad , jats are again in news!..NDTV is keeping this news in parallel of J&K attack!

read this blog!

Since there were many donors, it may not be possible for the university to celebrate anniversaries of all the donors. But, if a section of students (ABVP are within the democratic set up of India and university's student politics) want to OUTSIDE THE GATE OF UNIVERSITY then why shall their FREEDOM TO CELEBRATE be taken away merely because some xenophobes made an objection,

And, what exactly is the objection: celebration of Hindu king's bday anniv in a muslim university? Didnt he donate the land? Doesnt AMU receive UGC grants funded by the tax payers who are 82% Hindus? HRD certainly has a stake too.

All these must objections must be put down to uphold the right of ABVP to peacefully celebrate. If university can not officially participate, then they must not shut it down. If the SP of Mulla Mulayam, does not want to support it, then the state govt must not stop the celebration in the name of Muslim appeasement (separate the duties of state govt from the communal agenda of SP).

Issue is curtailment of FREEDOM OF CELEBRATION (by Hindus) in a muslim university, which was further politicised by SP. ABVP and HRD are right to stick to their right to hold it, these fundamentalists must be countered.

I think the VC (a former general and brother of Naseeruddin Shah) feared for the peace of the university and hence didn't allow the event. He is well within his rights to do it.

Perhaps its the backing of ABVP and BJP to the event that is stoking the fears of the VC. After all, ABVP is known to use muscle power and take law into their own hands. They have been involved in numerous incidents including beating of a Professor in Ujjain who later died of his injuries. They also blackened the face of a Professor of another university who spoke something negative about Modi. Clearly with this kind of a past, their intentions behind this event was what made the VC ban it.

Not to say other student groups are angels. Today's politics has every student group affiliated to some political party or another and that is where problems start.

Yup...you may be right about the VC.

That will be strange for a VC to assume ABVP to be trouble makers, specially when there is involvement of Union HRD ministry. This then becomes Law and Order problem, VC must specifically state so and urge the other trouble-maker elements to let ABVP hold the celebration for a right cause.

If VC is being selective in appeasement of troublemakers who wish to take away FREEDOM of CELEBRATION in a peaceful manner, then it reflects badly on VP and university's culture. Academic institutes are suppose to teach students virtues of freedom, secularism, etc and not buckle under communal islamist pressure.

ABVP is not Al Qayeda or SIMMI. ABVP is a legal organization, they too have rights, one can not auto-assume troubles against them.

Muslims have rights to have a MINORITY institute in majority India funded by the majority/hindu taxpayers?
Do majority Hindus have right to celebrate anniv of their Hindu patron/donor of muslim university?
Do hindu students and their hindu-leaning democratic student organizations have a right to exist and celebrate their events peacefully in a minority (Muslim) university?

I am not making it a communal thing. But the people making troubles certainly have communal agenda. VC, state govt, law and order authorities, instead of buckling under the pressure of intolerant communal elements (by stopping the celebration), they must strictly deal with these communal elements (expel from the university, take them in precautionary custody, prosecute the violators, etc). Do not let the jehadist elements take the rest of civic society hostage ..because people fear riots and gundagardi. Deal with gundas, dont silence others peaceful celebrations sunder the fear of gundas.

You already made it a communal thing and your entire post is based on the presumption that those opposing the event are communal. :)

ABVP and BJP are political organizations. Hence any events backed by them have to be seen in that light. Period.

I do think the VC could have handled this better, just like the earlier incident involving him making a comment about girls' access to library.

3 surprising facts about Jat King at the centre of AMU row

Thanks to all this controversy, people will at least know how great the man was. Man was truly great and deserves highest possible honor;

http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/...bout-raja-mahendra-pratap-singh/1/404219.html

Interestingly he tried to start even a new religion called " Prem Dharma" and wrote a book on it. How come Jats rally around so much around Maharaja Suraj Mal and not Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh?
