Some people advocate Sehwag etc for Captainship....it is funny really....apni langotti te sangwai nahi jati Sehwag tei ARR KAPTANI KAREGGA....and less said is better about Yuvraj singh and Kaif....Ek saal ke baad..these chappies have come out of their slumber and scored a few runs ,that too without consistancy....captain bana do in ko....??? If Kapil dev was offensivwe...what great he achieved for indian Cricket as a captain.?..he has the worst Win/loss record as a captain...only glory he brought to India was winning of world cup 1983 and ofcourse he was a wonderful baller..and a genuine ALL-ROUNDER....But as a captain he was Taayn-Taayn fiss. DRAWID IS THE BEST CHOICE IN PRESENT CIRCUMSTANCES AS PER ME.
Dear Dahiya ji,
I am surprised to read your assessment of players like Sehwag and Kapil Dev. Kapil had been the cricketer of last century winning the recognition against tough competitors like Sachin and Gawaskar. Sehwag is an attacking player and that is reflected in his batting style. Thus basically he has an attacking attitude. Similarly Kapil Dev has similar attitude. It was because of his attacking attitude he could take fight in to the opposition's camp in match against Zimbabwe in 1983 World Cup. Winning the match from situation of being 5 down for 17 runs is no mean achievement irrespective of the quality of opposition. He did not have players as talented as Sachin, Dravid, Sehwag, Kumble or Ganguly himself. With utility players like Yashpal Sharma, Rozer Binny, Madan Lal and Kirti Azad, he was able to beat the team having Desmond Haynes, Viv Richard, Gordon Greenidge, Clive Loyad and Alwin Kalicharan. He battled with this bunch of utility players against the opposition having talented players like Graham Gooch, Ian Bothom, Javed Miandad, Imran Khan, Martin Crowe, Richard Hadlee, Alan Border and company. The list is endless.
In Madras tied test he took the Challange of scoring 347 runs on a 5th day wicket and almost achieved it. How many Captain will go for a win in that situation. And what else, in 16 years not even a single match missed with injury. That speaks of the discipline and dedication the man had. I am sure he does not require endorsement from us to be called a great player.
A captain needs to be innovative and attacking. Lala Amarnath may not be having a very good record as a Captain, but he did give Don Bradman run for his money in early 50s. He is one of the few Captain who declared first innings with 97 runs behind still having 3 wickets in hand just to exploit the wet pitch and strength of his two top spinners Venu Mankad and Ghulam Ahmad. Only his brilliance was undone by another brilliant thinker of the game, Sir Don Bradman who opened the innings with tail enders and reversed his batting order. India did manage the 5 wickets for few runs, but then next day Bradman came and scored a century to steal the match from India. This is the kind of attitude a Captain needs to have. who is attacking and knows the strength and weaknesses of his team.
I have nothing against Dravid, but to me he looks a little defensive and more traditional. Attacking players likely to make attacking Captain. Attack is the best form of defense. Innovation and surprises are the key to success. I do wish Dravid best of luck and at the same time wish that he develops an attacking attitude and strategy.
