The so-called encounter specialits are again on mission to probe in 11 july blast case. They were sidelined in recent years but the department called them back to use their expertise, experience and their own informant net to get breakthrough in this incident. Some of them were suspended others were expelled from crime branch and put in other units. Now ATS has called them back to help in blast probe.

My point to put this article here is, what Jatland people think about these cops like Daya Nayak, Pradeep Sharma and others? What image you have in your mind?

Personally I am an admirer of all these super cops, even if they got some links with underworld or they accumulated out of proportion wealth. They brought down the gang war in Mumbai very much. Dons had to flee from India because of the fear of these so-called encounter specialits.

Please share your thoughts.

Thanks

Bad guys do what government doesnt want them to.

In other words, bad guy stick it up to the government. They are my super heros.

I wish we have more Dawoods and Salems who break the stupid laws of the country. Example: Drugs, Arms Control, Prostitution etc.

Dear Sumit,

I am amazed to see your state of mind. It looks to me that there is some thing basically wrong, when you support the Dons and all other things that you have mentioned above.

It remids me of the famous quote,

The problem with the world is that stupids are "Cocksure" while the intelligents are "Full of Doubts".

God bless you or should I say Don Bless You.

I think it is for the better...

I would say that whatever works on a short run/ long run (preferably both) should be done. This definitely on a short run will help in controling crime and eradicating hard core criminals/ terrorists. On a long run, it will induce fear in other perpetrators and the message (of no mercy) should spread.

As far as amassing wealth is concerned, I would say that these guys are still better than the 'usual' guys who are not only amassing loot but doing absolutely nothing too!

200+ victims of terrorism a big tragedy for any democracy. I believe the bigger tragedy is the fact that the action taken is a condemnation of the act!! (Is that not by default! I mean who will say yes we appreciate attacks!). Further, the only other action taken has been asking our neighbour to commit AGAIN for steps towards peace! (COMMIT! actually it is quiet humorous now :D )

93, parliament, bangalore, 'perpetual' kashmir etc etc...we will continue to get killed, BUT will condemn for sure :D

First of all, let me say that adages do not hold true in all circumstances. Adages were words of common wisdom. Thus they do not hold true in uncomon circumstances.

Call me insane or call me lost. The fact is that none of the government laws work

1. Drug control

Because of tough laws commodities like cocoaine that hardly have an "opportunity cost" sell for several times the the cost of the most expensive of all commodities. 1 KG of cocaine can fetch several lakh rupees.

Drug control laws drive up the cost of substances. This gives an incentive to people to set up a "back alley" trade in commodities adn substance that are baqnned by the government to mkae a quick buck.

Inspite of all the drug control laws and "war on drugs," substances sell openly on the streets at a premium.

Who makes the premium? People who break the "drug control laws."

Who suffer? Ordinary people. Those who consume such substances pay exorbitant prices for something that is not worth it. If they cannot afford to pay for the substances, they rob honest and hard working people who do not have anything to do with "drugs" or "war on drugs."

2. Arms

Most if not all crimes are committed by "illegally" procured arms.

The underworld deals in arms because the "normal" avenues to buy arms have been closed by the government.

It only helps the bad guys when untraceble arms are floating around in the market, becuase the weapons cannot be traced after the crime has been commited.

Thus "gun control" laws only help in increasing crime. Who suffers? People who cannot procure arms legally to defend themselves.

It is easier to get an AK 47 illegally than to get a license for a "desi revolver."

3. Prostitution

It needs to be legalized.

Since it is banned by the government, it again gives an incentive to the bad guys to deal in it.

Who gets exploited? innocent women who are pushed into the trade.

Government laws are wreaking havoc for the ordinary people. We are paying a heavy price for stupid laws.

Bad guys who break the laws give us the reason that we need to give a second look to our laws.

Had drugs, guns and prostitution been legal, where would ahve these underworld dons been.

Anyways, it is well known that these so called "encounter specialists" knock down people from one gang, for some other gang. Even though we cut their paychecks, they work for someone else.

So how can someone have respect for such diloyal public servants. They do not work for us. They work for those who work against us.

Bad guys are my super heros because they motivate me. they motivate me to crusade against stupid laws. Lws that have made their existence possible, in the first place.

It is just sheerly amazing to see highly aged and expericned people to think contermporarily when they have seen the failure of the government all their lvies. Isnt it time to think out of the box, or you still want to keep thinking the way.

My question is Colenel Saab! why did you leave India? I am sure that the whole immigration process must have taken you a good 15 or so years. I know immigration doesnt happen in a flash. You must have decided to immigrate because you were frustrated by the state of affairs in our country.

So how can you put up a nice face and say that things are just fine the way they are. And we need to keep encouraging contemporary policies that have totally screwed us over.

Both as the financial capital of the country and as a port city, Mumbai attracts a large floating population of foreigners from a wide spectrum of countries. This has implications for internal security. Some less important issues include trafficking in women, children and drugs. The flow of job-seekers from all parts of India adds to the complexity of police tasks. There is a nationwide belief that if you are jobless, go to Mumbai, where you can somehow keep your body and soul together doing some errand which will earn you two square meals a day.
The city also has sizeable minority groups that demand undivided attention. Any slackness or overreaction on this front can spark off major incidents that invite international attention. Interestingly, the criminal gangs in the city are divided on communal lines, with Chhota Rajan's estrangement from Dawood Ibrahim attributed to the latter's targeting of Hindus, as in the case of the Mumbai blasts.
Amidst all this, if there is one positive factor that helps policemen it is the generally law-abiding population, which respects even a police constable's authority. You must see this yourself to believe it. Traffic policemen in the city command the highest respect, and it is rare that a motorist defies him. Contrast this with the lawbreakers on Chennai streets who do not care two hoots for the policemen who merely want them to obey traffic rules

and hear i agree with vivek tht this is successful in short term,,dont think it will have good implications in long term

Respected members,
May I request you all to stick to the subject. The matter I intended to discuss has been lost after first 2-3 posts.

Its a right move to call the encounter specialist to investigate Mumbai bomb blast. I they should be around all the time to keep all the criminal under control. Fear of encounter specialist works in criminal minded people.

Few months back I was reading Daya Nayak's case and he is suspended for having more assests than his known source of income. Did we ever suspended a politician for that reason???

I am not getting personal.

I am just sick and tired of people proposing government solutions for our security.

Wasnt the government supposed to protect us? They have failed miserbaly not once but again and again.

How many chances do we need to give the government to ensure our safety? The "currency of the crisis" is the "blood of the innocent." Is it because we havent personally lost anyone in a terrorist attack, yet? Are we going to start thinking differently after we loose a loved one?

If government were a private security guard, he would have been fired after the 1993 Mumbai blasts.

So why this immunity for the government? Is condemnation of a neighboring state enough for us to forgive the government and give it another chance?

What is the guarantee that these so called "encounter specialists" will resolve the problem? Are they going to knock down everyone who wants to blow us up? Can we say that we will be totally secure once these "encounter specialists" are pressed into duty?

People leave India because they are just done with it. They cannot tolerate the failure of the state. I used to be glad that I left India. But, now I just feel that I am AWOL (Absent Without Leave) from where the real problem is.

Thus, I intend to return and bring a new perspective to our problems. But I find it disheartening that people are so rigid to accept out of the box solutions?

Why do we want to stick to the means that have gotten us nowhere? Why dont we rethink our public policy?

Today, the government is a cumbersome socialist institution becuase people have acceptance for the concept. Things wont be the same when people loose respect for such behemoth monsters like government.

Maybe then things will change.

We have a million strong army on our borders. People still sneak in and blow us up. Shame Shame Shame!

If there is no problem with the security apparatus of our country, then the only other thing in our country that could be malfunctioning is the public policy.

Call all the encounter specialists you like. Lets see if people stop blowing us up.

Jakhar saheb,

I am personally with you on you being supportive & appreciative of super cops or let's say the REAL cops. As far as the having links with underworld is concerned , I think that is part & parcel of of thenetwork of human intelligence that is needed to get to these bad guys, in other words you can not get any intelligence if you do not have a mole inside the underworld , keep you r friends close & enemies even closer philosophy.

I wish all these reinstated cops ONLY THE BEST & let them do what they do the best ENCOUNTERS. I am glad that for once government is trying to stay away from POLITICAL CORRECTNESS.

Dear Sumit,
You have raised some very valid points, only the solution is not contemporaty. Desperate situation require extraordinary effort but not the illigal efforts. Having no control means, a free for all situation, where might will be right. That is exactly what the dictatorship is. We would be going back to the Jungle rule. Let us not get destabilized by few errent people's acts. While the illigal things will still be finding their way to the market and the consumers, makinig them available at lower prices and freely will only be making them accessable to more people. That is not the right thing to do. If some one breaks the law, that does not mean we just abolish the law. It only gives us a point to think as to how to prevent this. And that is exactly what needs to be done. We don't want to solve one problem just to create another one, and if I may say the bigger one.

It is easier to get an AK 47 illegally than to get a license for a "desi revolver.".

Regarding arms control. It is a big debate here in US. The arms are freely available here in US and most of the crimes are committed by people having legitimate weapons. Thus just by removing arms control would not eliminate the use of arms for illigal purposes, be it murder, robbery or any thing.
The problem here is that of enterpreanuers (the very subject you propogate against the government) who don't care so long they make money. Arms industry is the most profitable industry in the world. Afghanistan, doesn't make AK-47, yet you may find them in plenty. Similar is the case of Hamas, Hezbolla and other terrorist organizations. Unfortunately, many governments sponsor the terrorism and have taken it as extension of their military activities or say the policies. There are several countries where the authority of the institutioin of the government does not exists. We all know the problems faces by the innocent population there.

3. Prostitution

It needs to be legalized.

Since it is banned by the government, it again gives an incentive to the bad guys to deal in it.

Who gets exploited? innocent women who are pushed into the trade.

Prostitution is some thing that I would not like to comment upon. Some people take it to this profession, by desire and some by compulsion. In my personal opinion, it does not affect the society as badly as, drugs and terrorism do. Any thing done forcefully, and against the wishes of a person is illigal. That is the difference in prostitution and I would say rape.

I would not like to have it free for all society in my personal views. A social organization needs to follow certain rules and that the bottom line. If we don't allow prostitution we need to find suitable occupation for these women.

That would initiate the discussion, that most of these terrorists. or dons became what they are today, because they did not find a suitable job. That might be true and it is precisely this reason, we need to find a solution beyond the police action. That is a subject by itself and can be discussed separately.

Even though my immigration to US has nothing to do with the subject itself, but since you have raised this question, that probably may be bothering you about my credibility itself, I would try my best to explain in minimum possible words, so that I don't waste other members valuable time in reading this.

I got my first opportunity to come to US in Sep, 1975, when I got admission in US to do my bachelors degree. However at the same time, I got selected to IMA and I decided to join the forces (mind you, all my life I wanted to be a Professor). My sister was the first one to come to US way back in 1968. My brother came here on Green Card in 1979. It took just 8 months for him to get a green card after applying. My mother came here in 1983 on Green Card. It was in 1984 that my family filed my case against my wishes. It was my mother's desire to be here with other family members. I got my green card in 1996, but I came in 1998 since I promissed to my mother that I would leave army after commanding my battalion. I have instructors grade both on Staff College as well as Senior Command Course. I also have two above average reports as Commanding Officer. Leaving such a career with opportunities to go up in sight was not only difficult but also painful. Being from Infantry, I did not have much technical skills, and let me tell you I started a $8.75 per hour job opening mail in one of the catelogue company

But the difference is that I don't live in my own "Bubble" I live in a society and feel that no matter where I live, I have my obligation to the society that I need to fulfill with best of my abilities.

I hope I have answered your question.

You have the right to choose your role models, be it a Don, or a terrorist, after all you enjoy a freedom, that is being protected from these Dons and Terrorists by an institution called "GOVERNMENT".
