kahan ku to bahut kuch hai par aaj nahi fir kabhididn't get it

An old cliche : beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder! However, I agree that the time tested, traditional wear is very attractive and fashionable in EVERGREEN style.

Reminds me of a song (Aruna Irani and Mehmood), where Aruna is asking Mehmood to dress up in traditional Indian attire (dhoti Kurta) while Mehmood insists Aruna dress up in western clothes etc. here is a YouTube clip

Our history sources tell us that for women, dressing up in less clothes was fashionable. I see that in museums too. In temple sculptures of deities dating before say 13th century C.E, they are shown wearing very less, especially the woman deity. In comparison, the deities in today's temples are quite fully clothed!

In medieval period Indian women and men have same attires a sense of equaity and can be easily put in the cateogry of vulgarity as per present norms of Indian society . Read the first two lines of the link pasted below

You are quite right. In ancient India, men and women dressed very similarly. Even the jewellery was the same. Except for the forehead Tekka (i.e., borla) worn by women sometimes, all the jewellery was pretty much the same for both. I have attached a 2nd century B.C.E photo of a sculpture from Sunga Dynasty to validate the point. Enjoy!

The logic that comes to my mind behind wearing short clothes by men and women in the ancient times is that the level of self-restraint of the contemporary men-folk must have been certainly of very high degree. The level of self-control among modern age men-folk, especially the youngsters, has reached the danger-level and their character is at its lowest ebb. There can be no argument other than this against the perceived sartorial impropriety on the part of modern women because fashion is something which is a matter of individual taste. If men learn how to control themselves, the whole controversy would come to an end. But that ideal situation might never come in India. In the prevailing scenario, it is nothing but foolishness on the part of a lady to venture out clad in a bikini akin to that worn by the ancient ladies depicted in our epics/ancient sculptures and carvings of Khajuraho fame.

I think the attitude of women should be towards the liberal side (right from the beginning) to be able to be assertive naturally. As they say, charity begins at home. If home environment is supportive and conducive, it makes a hell lot of difference in the outside world.

agreed people....about all the explanation you have given for the clothing of women...and about sindoor and bindi and mangalsutra...i think ...i haven't seen my grandmum's wearing any of these ever.... these things we just adopted in a generation ( i don't know from where) and if we leave them now...i don't think its a big deal :)

Agreed. This is all unnecessary stuff. But proper clothing is important.

I think these newer traditions are due to increased superstitious outlook among women. Sure, if you want to leave these practices, we can do so by saying we are too traditional and do not want to adopt this newer fashion!
