Food inflation fell sharply to 1.81% for the week ended on Dec. 10. Reports say that it is the lowest in last 4 years. The link below gives some more information?

Do members think that inflation has declined as low as claimed by the reports?

Has it reduced your daily expenses?

Also, I could not understand this % issue, does 1.81% mean that the prices increased only 1.81% on the base prices of 2007-08 or is it something else?

It is still a positive number, which means the net prices still went up (some items showed a fall while others increased as per the report). Only the rate of price increase was lower. I don't know the exact reasons, but the "high base" effect obv makes an impact- that is the rate is measured against the already high prices from last year.

I cannot understand why our government measures the inflation on Whole sale prices.....it should be measured on retail prices like most of the developed countries do.....i know the retail prices differ but inflation should also be different for different locations....or an avg. rate can be taken......in india, inflation is measured on weekly basis..........

I dont rely on inflation data as its very basic calculation is not reliable........calculate CPI and not WPI then real inflation would be known......ok....if you are saying that food inflation has reduced to 1.81%........then why money is running like a horse?.....that's because the Govt. wants to fool us by showing faulty data.........Statistics is an art too......Bad situations can be interpreted good.

Prices for sure must have gone down to the said low level in food sector. However this has to be steady if the effect has to be passed to the consumers. We need to factor in seasonal trends before we can conclude anything.

It looks like the people who have stored things have started releasing them in the market and which probably is driving this fall in prices. Its good for some bad for others. Usually in india food prices move up and down too quickly due to speculative behavious of some group as well.

I think farmers must start something like making pickles, Jams or some other long lasting finished product. They can start some rice mill and sell rice in local market.
But for starting anything they all need to make some corporation. On basis of a corporation formation many banks are providing loans and Govt. schemes are there for subsidy. But all these subsidies and schemes are used by wealthy only because of non corporation among farmers. You can make a big difference to the society only when you are united.
Many politicians are enjoying benefits of these schemes. If they make a storage facility in village and have cooperation among themselves they can maximize the returns and an able farmer can help a small farmer during times when he is suffering shortage. But all these things looks good in words but not so easy in reality.
