NEW DELHI, May 26: India's Olympic medal hope, boxer Vijender Singh is fighting a different kind of battle outside the ring. One that is threatening to hamper his preparations for the Beijing Games.

At a time when hundreds of crores are being spent on getting infrastructure in place for the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games, the Doha Asiad silver medallist is spending from his own pocket to get ready for Beijing which is just a few months away.

Vijender, one of the five Indian boxers to have made it to the mega event, is currently with the Indian squad in Chinese Taipei where boxers who have qualified for the Olympics are taking part in the Presidency Cup.

"I am really finding it difficult to meet my requirements in my preparation for the Olympics. And money is certainly the biggest problem I am facing at the moment," Vijender told ToI. "Given the current situation, I am spending from my pocket to meet most of my training and dietary needs."

The Arjuna award winner said his training and diet involve a lot of expenses and in the absence of a sponsor he is finding it hard to meet them. As an example he said he had to spend Rs 17,000 alone for 1 kg of vitamin supplements. "I also need a lot of equipment to keep myself mentally and physically fit for the Olympics."

The boxer from Bhiwani, who's is currently working for the Railways, received an aid of Rs 5,000 from the boxing federation recently, which helped him to some extent. He is also spending the money he has received from the government as reward for winning medals in different competitions.

Vijender said he was getting support from the Mittal Champions Trust (MCT) earlier but they have discontinued the association. MCT officials could not be reached for comment.

The 22-year-old also said he was not too sure whether other sponsors would come forward to help him in his hour of crisis. "Honestly speaking I don't know what to do to get a sponsor. I don't know anybody in the corporate world," he said.

Yet again...!!
This is very sad.

100 mein se 100 beimaan, fir bhi mera desh mahan! hence proved! :)

The Solutions!

First of all I would like to thank the thread starter to bring this topic on the forum. Name Vijendra Singh, from Bhiwani looks that he is a boy from our community.

There are various things that we can do.

1. Deepender ko Kam Batao: This could be one work told to Mr. Deepender Hooda and if not him then Mr. Bhupinder Hooda. After all he is the boy from Haryana and the Govt of Haryana has a moral obligation to take care of this boy.

2. He is representing India in Olympics. So our honorable Sports Minister could be approached by the people of our community in India.

3. Sports Ministry of Haryana could be of some help.

4. Indian Olympic committee could be approached and asked to help the boy. I am sure he may not be the only one.

5. Jan Jagriti movement can do some kind of fund raising for this boy.

6. Our Railway Ministry could help. Has some one contacted Mr. Laloo Prasad Yadav?

And most importantly our so called self claimed community leaders, Mr. Om Prakash Chautala and Ch Ajit Singh could be contacted to donate a few lakhs if not crores from their banks to help this boy.

The solutions are many, who want to do that. Can some one from Indian participants of this site do the needful?????

Finally some times the truth is much more than what meets the eye. I had seen in my military career, that some times athletes did have enough funds to prepare for the competition, but they always complained. Most of the time they brought out this point to shield their lack of preparation. This might not be the case in this scenario, but Mr. Vijendra Singh and his Coach would have definitely worked out the total estimated expenses involved the the resources to fund them. If they were running short of it, then this point should have been brought up in time.

Our own community leaders back home can motivate some sponsors for this boy. Let some one from India take the charge.

The need is immidiate and thus who ever is willing to take on this responsibility, has to work quickly, if we really want to help this boy.

Like other threads posting regarding Jat lads qualified for upcoming universal fair of sports, this too gives pride but with pain to the community about making it in to flight for Beijing. That is the tragedy for personal events rather than team sport of lacking in funds and morever from a populated country who is starving for a gold medal for decades.I remember an incident cited in a magzine by a journalist who happened to meet Former Mr India, Mr World and Mr Olympiad(85) Padam Bhuasan Mr Prem Chand Dogra at railway booking counter where his identity card was thrown out of the window. It couldnt give him a reserved seat.Thats an irony of a hero.

I can deeply understand the acute problem of being a boxer as I, myself is pursuing it amaturely for my college.I have seen many professional matches here in Ireland and talked with their coaches. To contest at international level it requires your armour full in every sense with supporting staff and knoweledge of technical stuff.Amir Khan(21) is the topmost boxer of Europe in lightweight nowadays, even he is being sponsored by sports giant like Reebok for his professional training for olympics plus community support from Muslim organisations is immense which we even cant comprehend. They even paid 'Rocky' Sylvestor Stallone to speak with him for boosting his moral.

Like Tevatia sir has made some valid points regarding less time and supplying; it could be a disaster Godforbid.

Deepender Hooda and other same chimpus of sports ministry would be announcing it later after his arrivals. Can we wait for it? Should We?

Only critical step which seems pragmatic in our reach is various Jat Mahashabas, Sarv Khaps panchayats (Which blow lakhs of tobacco for a gotra contrversy in a meeting) acroos the states, country and at International level.Since this is a piece of newspaper report , who will be going to represnt the boxer to accept the help provided?

Last but not least 'sensation frenzy media' can atleast make it an emotional appeal to the 'criket blinded public'.Various journalists who are members of this site can be helpful and approached for this very purpose.

Ironicaly, Board of Criket Control in India can help as well but the possibility of this seems vague.

vijendra has given a befitting reply by beating the olympic gold medalist in the presidents cup in chinese taipei

500 * 100 = 50 , 000 ! is a pretty hefty amount.

Assuming that we all can spare at least Rs 500 ( on an average ) for such a cause.

And that only 1 % out of 9790 members can be able to doante.

Well the fundraising can be done here only.

Cool !! I am game.
Who's collecting? Navin bhai ... ??

Nice suggestion Anil Bhai ...

Sumit you are right I find Navin Gulia suitable for this ... and I wish to know if the members who wish to contribute can send that amount to JJ account.

One more current venue could be the coming DJM meet ... where perhaps 30 members would be there and they can put up a stand where any of the attendees could deposit the amount .... later Navin bhai and other could handover that cheque to the boxer by inviting him or his parents to a small function with media coverage ... so that he can get some light and may this bring some more contribution from others ... or some sponsors ...

Navin Bhai just reply if we can directly put the JJ account number for transfers ... let us see if we are able to contribute something enough to present to the struggling boxer.

Also I would like to suggest you people having get together for DJM .... to go for snacks rather than lunch for the DJM ... and spare some money out of it for the same besides the voluntary contribution stall there for this community upcoming boxer.

Bhaiyon,
Thanks for your faith in me. Give me one days time. I will see if we can get him a sponsorship. With his beating the reigning olympic Gold medalist, it wont be difficult.
I am confident he will come back a celebrity with an olympic medal. Pray he keeps his fitness, energy and momentum for olympics.

Fund Raising for Vijendra

I think Rs 500 is a decent amount for us to donate to help this boy.

Naveen ji please send the mailing address and the organization for which check can be made payable. I think if you have an account in the name of Jan Jagrati, that would be fine. Post the information today.

Any one want to donate more than Rs. 500 is most welcome. If you can't donate Rs 500, then donate whatever you can spare or afford.

Naveen Bhai, Please take on this task through your organization.

We are all with you.

My appeal to all Jats all around the world to help this boy.

Imp: can some one give me information regarding his village and his profession at the earliest.
