First and foremost government policies, for instance

1) Devaluation of currency has helped the most in the growth of IT industry which enjoys most of its revenue from outside of the country
2) Educational initiatives: IITs and other govt funded colleges established by government, which were later adopted by private players as well gave this Industry a flourishing supply of talent

Another major factor that lead the growth IT in the country is our cultural aspect. Indians are hardworking and less entrepreneurial and easy to adapt to any condition due to no-language barrier which is a major concern for rest of the Asian economies. And some credit goes to government as well here which let English be the main language of our business conduct.

These are some thoughts off the head, will post more later.

The most important factor is that of good governance.
Many talented people go abroad to escape from the day-today living hassles like, road jams while commuting, polluted environment, adulteration in food, personal security, dealing with government agencies, primary education etc.

How does that relate to growth of IT?

1) Cheap technical labour
2) relaxed labour laws
3) A large number of people who can understand English.
4) Non anti west attitude of majority
5) Capability of working in graveyard shifts
6) As far as core IT work is concerned its still in West ....
But we are losing this edge to phillipines after some year you will see all these jobs are going their

Good governance is fundamental for maintaining a sustained growth for any sector, including IT.
Talented Indians having capability to deliver from the top of the technology pyramid, move oversees where they can use their brains for better use.
There is a limit to the growth at the base i.e lower technology pyramid. For example, the call centers in the BPO sector.

Arent you being ironical here? On one hand topic is about what lead to growth of IT in India, and you are saying India is not well governed but still has a growing IT industry.

I wouldn't not worry about Philippines much given their size and our volume and cost differences, it is a short wave but we have to worry more about obsolete business delivery model of Indian IT companies like Infosys. The existing model is becoming obsolete and newer players are gaining more strength.

Fixing Y2K was one single driving factor as that created global markets. Another factor was the development of good communication facilities.

Combination of all these factors.

Thank you members for your posts on the thread.

What do you think will be the future for IT? Will it be able to provide employment to the extent it has been providing so far with India not being the only favored nation for IT sourcing?

There is wide scope for growth of IT in India.

I'd differ on the future.

On macro level I believe our government is taking some good steps like

1) Opening our market to further to global players through FDI- now this might not be a directly visible benefits but our IT companies work with these clients globally and government behind the closed doors does put in clauses of working with local players.
2) Further devaluation of currency: People who do not understand the currency are cribbing but our RBI governor is happy with current situation of Rupee, and rightly so. If government can manage to make rupee stay at this level it will be a direct cost benefit to IT industry who outsources most of the services
3) US will be an ally: Most of IT companies get their contracts from US, then Europe and US is becoming our ally which is another good sign for the IT industry

However on Micro level things might be a bit concerning, our big companies like Infosys are already struggling, entrapped in visa issues and the senior management who started the company is phasing out.

Indian IT industry needs to evolve itself tremendously to have the grasp they have had. For Instance:

1) We need to move towards quality benefits over cost benefits
2) We need to build knowledge centers(Accenture opened one in China, and they dont know why)

If Indian companies fail to rise to the occasion outside MNCs would grasp it.

But the fact remains, I T Industry in India is sure to flourish in India in not too distant future.

As per Adam Smith (of Wealth of Nations fame), it ought to be free market economics and INNOVATION.

English language have helped India's IT sector growth, apart from that Individual people who cashed the opportunities and helped in Outsourcing. Govt's role is negligible.

Rightly said. Technology and English language go hand in hand.
